He never became king. He died in his prime of life. But Jonathan is a great example of sacrificial love. Many theologians note the similarities between Jonathan and Jesus. David's best friend pointed towards David's "Greater Son" in the way he exercised humility and willingly sacrificed his life for others.

Jonathan defeated the Philistine garrison in Geba

From this point forward, every time that David has a major military victory, further securing King Saul’s kingdom, Saul tries to kill him. And it is Jonathan who is constantly working to calm his Father down and reminding him of all the good that David has done on his behalf. Yet, God seems to be instigating Saul.

John 15:13
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
What are some of the ways we can lay down our lives for others?
We tend to focus on the huge sacrifice at the end. Jonathan laid down his life for his country, his father and his friend. But, as you look at the life of Jonathan, it becomes clear… he has been laying down his life for many years before he died on Mt. Gilboa. Laying down your life isn’t a final act, it’s a continuous process of dying to yourself and living for others.
