Have you ever asked the question what is a true disciple of Christ? Maybe you’re not even sure what a disciple is. In our passage this week Jesus is going to test those around Him who say they are genuine followers of Him. One man bravely said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go,” (v. 19) until he realized it would cost him his comfort. Another let family commitments stand in his way (v. 21). But Jesus waits for no one, He tells both of them and us, follow me! The standards for discipleship are high but the rewards are eternal. Like any well-planned building project, we must count the cost before following Christ (Lk. 14:28) because He may take us where we do not want to go. We see an example of this in the following verses (23 – 27) where the disciples get into a boat to cross the sea of Galilee only to encounter a great storm that sends waves crashing over the side of boat and the panic-stricken disciples call out for Christ fearing for their lives (v. 25). His response to them is one we all need to hear “why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” (v. 26). As disciples of Christ our lives are not storm proof, but we can weather life’s trials and tribulations when we remember the Lord is in the boat with us.
5. The Son of Man
• Asserts Jesus’ humanity.
What is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for
him? (Psalm 8:4)
6. The Son of Man - Daniel 7
• Asserts Jesus’ deity.
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with
the clouds of heaven there came one like a
son of man, and he came to the Ancient of
Days and was presented before him.
7. 14 And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom, that all
peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him; his dominion is an
everlasting dominion, which shall
not pass away, and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
13. And the men
marveled,
saying, “What
sort of man is
this, that even
winds and sea
obey him?”
(Mt. 8:27)
When the centurion and
those who were with him,
keeping watch over Jesus,
saw the earthquake and
what took place, they were
filled with awe and said,
“Truly this was the Son of
God!” (Mt. 27:54)

Discipleship Tested & Jesus Calms the Storm
Matthew 8:18-27
First Point
Disciples are called to follow Jesus… No ifs, ands or BUTS!
Matthew 8:18-22
18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
Matthew 8:18-20

Second Point
Disciples are called to Faith, not Fear!
Matthew 8:23-27
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
