There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament pointing to the coming Messiah. We will explore only a few of these
below………
1) Born of a woman - OT Genesis 3v15 15
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and
her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” NT Galatians 4v4 4
But when the fullness of the
time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
2) Born of a virgin – OT Isaiah 7v14 14
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive
and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. NT Luke 1v30,34,35 30
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31
“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and
shall call His name JESUS. 34
Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35
And the angel
answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you;
therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
3) The Messiah will be the Son of God – OT Psalm 2v7 7
“I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are
My Son, Today I have begotten You. NT Matthew 3v17 17
And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Mark 3v11 11
And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down
before Him and cried out, saying, “You are the Son of God.”
4) The Messiah will be the Seed of Abraham – OT Genesis 22v18 18
“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be
blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” NT Matthew 1v1 1
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of
David, the Son of Abraham: Galatians 3v16 16
Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say,
“And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
5) The Messiah will be a son of Jacob – OT Numbers 24v17 17
“I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A
Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter (Ruler) shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the
sons of tumult. NT Luke 3v34 34
(Jesus..) the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son
of Nahor,
6) The Messiah will be from the tribe of Judah – OT Genesis 49v10 10
The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a
lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. NT Hebrews
7v14a 14
For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah,
7) The Messiah will be from the house of David – OT Isaiah 9 v6-7 6
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7
Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne
of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even
forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. NT Matthew 1v6,16 6
and Jesse begot David the king. David the
king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah…… 16
And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom
was born Jesus who is called Christ.
8) The Messiah will be born in Bethlehem – OT Micah 5v2 2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little
among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth
are from of old, From everlasting.” NT Matthew 2v1 1
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of
Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
9) The Messiah has preexisted - OT Micah 5v2 2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the
thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of
old, From everlasting.” NT Colossians 1v17 17
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
2. 10) The Messiah shall be called Immanuel – OT Isaiah 7v14 14
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold,
the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. NT Matthew 1v23 23
“Behold, the virgin
shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
11) The Messiah shall be a prophet – OT Deuteronomy 18v18 18
‘I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among
their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. NT Matthew
21v11 11
So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
12) The Messiah shall be a priest – OT Psalm 110v4 4
The LORD has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” NT Hebrews 3v1 1
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,
consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,
13) The Messiah shall be a judge – OT Isaiah 33v22 22
(For the LORD is our Judge, The LORD is our Lawgiver, The LORD is
our King; He will save us); NT 2 Timothy 4v1 1
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will
judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
14) The Messiah shall be King – OT Isaiah 9v7 7

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a
king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come
into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
15) The Messiah will be anointed by the Holy Spirit – OT Isaiah 11v2 2
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The
Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the
LORD. NT Matthew 3v16-17 16
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17
And
suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
16) The Messiah will be preceded by a messenger – OT Isaiah 40v3 3
The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare
the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God. NT Matthew 3v1-3 1
In those days John the
Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2
and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” 3
For this
is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the
LORD; Make His paths straight.’ ”
17) The Messiah’s ministry will include miracles – OT Isaiah 35 v5-6 5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the
ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6
Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters
shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert. NT Matthew 9v35 35
Then Jesus went about all the cities and
villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease
among the people.
18) The Messiah will enter Jerusalem on a donkey – OT Zechariah 9v9 9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O
daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a
donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. NT Matthew 21 v6-8 6
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.

They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8
And a very great multitude
spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
19) The Messiah will be a stumbling stone to the Jews – OT Psalm 118v22 22
The stone which the builders rejected Has
become the chief cornerstone. NT 1 Peter 2 v6-8 6
Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A
chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” 7
Therefore, to you
who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the
chief cornerstone,” 8
and “A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.”
3. 20) The Messiah will be a light to the Gentiles (non Jews) – OT Isaiah 42 v6-7 6
“I, the LORD, have called You in
righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the
Gentiles, 7
To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
NT Matthew 4v16 16
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and
shadow of death Light has dawned.” Luke 2v32 32
A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your
people Israel.”
21) The Messiah will be betrayed by a friend – OT Psalm 41v9 9
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate
my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me. NT John 13v18-19,21 18
“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom
I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

“Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 21
When Jesus had said
these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”
Matthew 10v4 4
Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
22) The Messiah will be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver – OT Zechariah 11v12-13 12
Then I said to them, “If it is
agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. 13
And
the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and
threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter. NT Matthew 26v14-16 14
Then one of the twelve, called Judas
Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15
and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted
out to him thirty pieces of silver. 16
So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. Matthew 27v5 5
Then he threw
down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. Matthew 27v7 7
And they consulted
together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.
23) The Messiah will be forsaken by his followers – OT Zechariah 13v7b “Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be
scattered; NT Mark 14v27,50 27
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night,
for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.’ 50
Then they all forsook Him and fled.
24) The Messiah will be silent before his accusers – OT Isaiah 53v7 7
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He
opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened
not His mouth. NT Matthew 27v12-14 12
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered
nothing. 13
Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14
But He answered him
not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
25) The Messiah will be scourged and wounded – OT Isaiah 53v5 5
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was
bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. NT Matthew
27v26 26
Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
26) The Messiah’s hands and feet will be pierced – OT Psalm 22v16 16
For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of
the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; NT – Luke 23v33 33
And when they had come to the
place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.
27) The Messiah will be put to death alongside transgressors – OT Isaiah 53v12b Because He poured out His soul unto
death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, NT – Matthew 27v38 38
Then two robbers were crucified with Him,
one on the right and another on the left.
28) The Messiah’s garments will be parted and lots cast for them – OT Psalm 22v18 18
They divide My garments among
them, And for My clothing they cast lots. NT John 19v23-24 23
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His
garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the
top in one piece. 24
They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that
the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast
lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.
4. 29) They will offer the Messiah gall and vinegar to drink – OT Psalm 69v21 21
They also gave me gall for my food, And
for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. NT Matthew 27v34 34
they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink.
But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
30) None of the Messiah’s bones will be broken – OT Psalm 34v20 20
He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.
NT John 19v33 33
But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
31) The Messiah’s side will be pierced – OT Zechariah 12v10b then they will look on Me whom they pierced. NT John
19v34 34
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
32) Darkness will cover the land from noon until three o’clock – OT Amos 8v9 9
“And it shall come to pass in that day,”
says the Lord GOD, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight; NT
Matthew 27v45 45
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. (sixth hour from
sunrise = noon)
33) The Messiah will be buried in a rich man’s tomb – OT Isaiah 53v9

And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. NT
Matthew 27v57-60 57
Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph,
who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59
When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, 60
and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone
against the door of the tomb, and departed.
34) The Messiah would rise from the dead – OT Psalm 16v10

For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will
You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. NT Mark 16v6 6
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You
seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.
35) The Messiah will ascend to heaven – OT Psalm 68v18a

Now when
He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white
apparel
36) The Messiah will be seated at the right hand of God - OT Psalm 110v1
1
The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My
right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” NT Hebrews 1v3 3
who being the brightness of His glory
and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by
Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
