Psalm 84 is a psalm written by men who were descendants of one of the Bible's great rebels, Korah. However, God redeems this family generations later and they become worship leaders who greatly value community. In this sermon, we will seek to be reinvigorated in our zeal for God's House, by looking at the devotion of the Sons of Korah to God's House and God's People.

“Stated simply, the number one
reason for the decline in church
attendance is that members
attend with less frequency than
they did just a few years ago.”

Psalm 84
2 My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.

Psalm 84
3Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for

young, at your altars, O LORD of
hosts, my King and my God.

Psalm 84

doorkeeper in the house of my
God than dwell in the tents of

Psalm 84
11 For the LORD God is a sun
and shield; the LORD bestows
favor and honor. No good thing
does he withhold from those
who walk uprightly.
Another word translated "blessing" is the Hebrew word esher, which indicates a state of happiness. This word occurs frequently in the Psalms and Proverbs. When the Psalmist says, "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers" (Psalm 1:1), he is saying "you will be happy if you do not walk in the counsel of the wicked, etc." Obedience to God is not a pre-requisite for salvation—while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8)—but obedience to God and living according to His Word is a recipe for blessing, for happiness in life (Proverbs 3:1-4).
The First Blessing
We are blessed when we praise God in “His House” together.
Psalm 84
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.
1How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faintsfor the courts of the Lord;my heart and flesh sing for joyto the living God.
3Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah
The Second Blessing
We are blessed when we find our strength in God together.
Psalm 84
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.
8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah
The Pilgrim Way
…in whose heart are the highways to Zion. (Psalm 84:5)
“who have the paths of pilgrimage in their hearts”
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.
The Third Blessing
We are blessed when we trust in God together.
Psalm 84
9 Behold our shield, O God;look on the face of your anointed!
10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!

When we live outside of healthy community, we not only lose others. We lose ourselves.”
