Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions The Lord’s Prayer 1st Petition: Hallowed Be Thy Name Memorization Verses: What does this mean? God's name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How is God's name kept holy? God's name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God's Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father!

From Luther’s Large Cat. “To annoy the devil, I say, we should always have this holy name of the Lord in our mouth, so that the devil may not be able to injure us as he wishes. For this purpose it also helps that we form the habit of daily commending ourselves to God, with soul and body, wife, children, servants and all the we have, against every need that may occur. That is why we have blessing and thanksgiving at meals, and other prayers for morning and evening have originated and remain in use. A simple help appears in the children’s practice of crossing themselves when anything monstrous or terrible is seen or heard, and they exclaim “Lord God, protect us!” “Help, dear Lord Jesus!” etc. Also, if anyone meets with unexpected good fortune, however trivial, he may say “God be praised and thanked; God has bestowed this on me!” etc. See, in this way, we might train our youth in a childlike way and playfully in the fear and honor of God. Then the First and Second Commandments might be well kept and in constant practice. Then some good might take root, spring up and bear fruit, and people may grow up whom the whole nation may desire and enjoy. In addition, this would be the true way to bring up children well as longs as they can become trained with kindness and delight
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Hallowed Be Thy Name” This is, indeed, somewhat obscure, and not expressed in good German, for in our mother-tongue we would say: Heavenly Father, help that by all means Thy name may be holy. But what is it to pray that His name may be holy? Is it not holy already? Answer: Yes, it is always holy in its nature, but in our use it is not holy. For God's name was given us when we became Christians and were baptized, so that we are called children of God and have the Sacraments by which He so incorporates us in Himself that everything which is God's must serve for our use. Here now the great need exists for which we ought to be most concerned, that this name have its proper honor, be esteemed holy and sublime as the greatest treasure and sanctuary that we have; and that as godly children we pray that the name of God, which is already holy in heaven, may also be and remain holy with us upon earth and in all the world.
But how does it become holy among us? Answer, as plainly as it can be said: When both our doctrine and life are godly and Christian. For since in this prayer we call God our Father, it is our duty always to deport and demean ourselves as godly children, that He may not receive shame, but honor and praise from us. Now the name of God is profaned by us either in words or in works. (For whatever we do upon the earth must be either words or works, speech or act.) In the first place, then, it is profaned when men preach, teach, and speak in the name of God what is false and misleading, so that His name must serve to adorn and to find a market for falsehood. That is, indeed, the greatest profanation and dishonor of the divine name. Furthermore, also when men, by swearing, cursing, conjuring, etc., grossly abuse the holy name as a cloak for their shame. In the second place also by an openly wicked life and works, when those who are called Christians and the people of God are adulterers, drunkards, misers, envious, and slanderers. Here again must the name of God come to shame and be profaned because of us. For just as it is a shame and disgrace to a natural father to have a bad perverse child that opposes him in words and deeds, so that on its account he suffers contempt and reproach, so also it brings dishonor upon God if we who are called by His name and have all manner of goods from Him teach, speak, and live in any other manner except as godly and heavenly children, so that people say of us that we must be not God's, but the devil's children.
Thus you see that in this petition we pray just for that which God demands in the Second Commandment; namely, that His name be not taken in vain to swear, curse, lie, deceive, etc., but be usefully employed to the praise and honor of God. For whoever employs the name of God for any sort of wrong profanes and desecrates this holy name, as aforetime a church was considered desecrated when a murder or any other crime had been committed in it, or when a pyx or relic was desecrated, as being holy in themselves, yet become unholy in use. Thus this point is easy and clear if only the language is understood, that to hallow is the same as in our idiom to praise, magnify, and honor both in word and deed. Here, now, learn how great need there is of such prayer. For because we see how full the world is of sects and false teachers, who all wear the holy name as a cover and sham for their doctrines of devils, we ought by all means to pray without ceasing, and to cry and call upon God against all such as preach and believe falsely and whatever opposes and persecutes our Gospel and pure doctrine, and would suppress it, as bishops, tyrants, enthusiasts, etc. Likewise also for ourselves who have the Word of God, but are not thankful for it, nor live as we ought according to the same. If now you pray for this with your heart, you can be sure that it pleases God; for He will not hear anything more dear to Him than that His honor and praise is exalted above everything else, and His Word is taught in its purity and is esteemed precious and dear.

But not yet have we solved the incantation of this whiteness, and learned why it appeals with such power to the soul; and more strange and far more portentous—why, as we have seen, it is at once the most meaning symbol of spiritual things, nay, the very veil of the Christian’s Deity; and yet should be as it is, the intensifying agent in things the most appalling to mankind. Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way? Or is it, that as in essence whiteness is not so much a colour as the visible absence of colour; and at the same time the concrete of all colours; is it for these reasons that there is such a dumb blankness, full of meaning, in a wide landscape of snows—a colourless, all-colour of atheism from which we shrink? LP 1st Petition: Discussion Quote
LP 1st Petition: Our Father? The second gospel gives us a taste of what Jesus meant when he addressed God with the expression 'Abba' (Mk 14,16). It is an Aramaic word used as a form of courtesy towards an elder, and moreover it became adopted in the language used by children in a family, even if they were grown-up, when they addressed the father. By calling God "Abba", Jesus manifested the unique relationship between himself and God, and at the same time showed the familiarity, the fidelity, the reverence, the availability which he enjoyed. No prayer, whether ancient Jewish, liturgical or private has ever ventured to address God as "Abba". Besides being the Father of Jesus Christ, God is also Father of Christians in every sense. This is not purely a natural phenomenon - everyone is a child of God -, but it is an eschatological gift in Christ.
Avinushebashamayimyitkadishshimkhah Pater hmwn o entoiv ouranoiv, agiasqhtw  to onoma sou Contrast between the addressing of God by a title, and the reference to His holy Name (Yahweh). Perhaps a well known phrase from the Qaddish (6thc.e) May Your great Name be magnified and sanctified 2nd person possesive and passive: You WILL HAVE your name Holy or MAKE Holy your Name. The work is on Yahweh, not us. LP 1st Petition: Exegesis
SS: Hallowed be Thy name. What does this mean? God's name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How is God's name kept holy? God's name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God's Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father!
Semetic cultures encapuslate the entire identity and aspiration of an individual in the name. Many names have been imposed upon and define the quality of the individual. But if among humanity there are many who do no honor to their names, God realizes in full the meaning of His Name. Among the divine names there is also "the Holy One". And God is truly Holy inasmuch as He transcends earthly realities; He is removed from the ineffectual and evil world, for He is absolutely powerful and good. The Jews speak reverently of the "Name of God" in order to avoid pronouncing explicitly "God" Himself. LP 1st Petition: God’s Name
M name of God. What is the connection between this petition and the Second Commandment? This petition and the Second Commandment both speak about the name of God. "In this petition we pray for exactly the same thing that God demands in the Second Commandment: that His name should not be taken in vain ... but used rightly to the praise and glory of God" (Large Catechism 11145). Ex. 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who missuses His name. Pray: O Lord God of compassions, stretch out Your hand and grant that all the sick may be healed. Grant them to be counted worthy of health. Free them from the sickness which lies upon them. Let them be healed in the name of Your only-begotten Son. May His holy name be to them a medicine for health and soundness, because through Him to You is the glory and the strength in the Holy Spirit both now and to all the ages of the ages. Amen. (Serapion of Thumius, d. after 360).
T keep His name holy What are we asking when we pray that God's name be made holy? Since God's name is God as He has revealed Himself to us, we cannot make His name holy, but we do pray that He would help us keep His name holy in our lives. Ps 54:1 Save me, O God, by Your name. Ps. 103:1 Praise the Lord, 0 my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Is 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not give My glory to another or My praise to idols. Pray: Your name be hallowed. Help us, Lord, in purity to keep Your Word that to the glory of Your name we walk before You free from blame. Let no false teaching us pervert; all poor deluded souls convert. Amen. (Luther).
To sanctify God’s name, one needs the following: The Holy Spirit who brings forth proper praise and confession of proper teaching. A place of Sonship as one who may approach the Father according to the gracious terms He has set forth. Proclamation of the true Word of God, rightly interpreted and explicated. A personal spirit of humility and conformity to the will/image of God. Take your SANDLES off! LP 1st Petition: Word of God
W God's Word How do we keep God's name holy? We keep God's name holy A. when God's Word is taught among us in its truth and purity; Jer. 23:28 Let the one who has My Word speak it faithfully. Jn 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. B. when we live according to the Word of God. Matt. 5:16 Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Eph. 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Bible narrative: Zacchaeus resolved to live the Christian life (Luke 19:1-9).
According to the Bible the Name of God could and could not be sanctified (i.e. profaned) by man or God. Humanity sanctifies the Name by observing His commandments. They profane His Name when they transgress it. Lev 22,31.32 states "Observe therefore my commandments and put them in practice. I am YHWH. Do not profane my Holy Name because I am Holy in the midst of the children of Israel." Note the two parallel forms: the progressive "observe" and "I am Holy"; and the antithetic "observe" and "do not profane". For God, to sanctify (not profane) His Name is manifested by punishing the Israelites guilty of idolatry in Egypt and then liberating them. God also sanctifies His Name (not profane) by intervening to punish the guilty pagans. In this way the idolaters see His power (Ex 39, 1-7). Finally God will one day sanctify His Name in a definite and complete LP 1st Petition: Profaning God’s Name
When we approach God in prayer, we are reminded of the following: He is the one who will make His name Holy whether it is hallowed by us (so reaping eternal benefits through Sonship in Christ) or rejected in idolotry (thus declaring Holiness in divine punishment). Continued renewal that we are to keep His name (identity and teaching) set apart and Holy by proclamation and our identity of good works. LP 1st Petition: Application

ThGod's name is profaned How is God's name profaned? God's name is profaned, that is, dishonored, A. when anyone teaches contrary to God's Word; Jer. 23:31 "Yes," declares the Lord, I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The Lord declares.'" B. when anyone lives contrary to God’s Word. Rom. 2:23-24 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of YOU.“ Pray: Dear God, convert and restrain. Convert those who are still to be converted, that together we may hallow and praise Your holy name by both pure and true teaching, and a good and holy life. Restrain those who refuse to be converted. May they stop misusing, defaming, dishonoring Your holy name and misleading Your needy people. Amen. (Luther).
Sing it! Popcorn Prayer: Hallowed Be Thy Name….
LSB 507 1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see:Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea.Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!
Sing it! Rise and shineAnd give God the glory, gloryRise and shineAnd give God the glory, gloryRise and shineAnd give God the glory, gloryChildren of the Lord
Conclusion Hallowed be Thy name. This petition and the Second Commandment both speak about the name of God. "In this petition we pray for exactly the same thing that God demands in the Second Commandment: that His name should not be taken in vain ... but used rightly to the praise and glory of God" (Large Catechism 11145). Since God's name is God as He has revealed Himself to us, we cannot make His name holy, but we do pray that He would help us keep His name holy in our lives. We keep God's name holy A. when God's Word is taught among us in its truth and purity; B. when we live according to the Word of God. God's name is profaned, that is, dishonored, A. when anyone teaches contrary to God's Word; B. when anyone lives contrary to God’s Word.

11.08.26 the lord's prayer 1st petition-hallowed be thy name

  • 2. Tell God who He is hymn sing…. You are Holy. You are rare. You are prime over all things. We are in awe of You. We revere You. We honor You. We worship You. We obey You. May all believe in Your Name! Your power will ensure Your name is universally honored on the last day! 30 first verses On your mark…get set… “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

Jehovah looseth the prisoners; 8Jehovah openeth the eyes of the blind; Jehovah raiseth up them that are bowed down; Jehovah loveth the righteous; 9Jehovah preserveth the sojourners; He upholdeth the fatherless and widow; But the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. 10Jehovah will reign for ever, Thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. • 38.

  • 47. Amen. (Serapion of Thumius, d. after 360).
