In Isaiah 7, God promises to give a sign to a wicked Judean king, Ahaz. King Ahaz is self-righteous and says that he needs no sign, but God insists and gives him a sign of a young maiden (Heb. Almah) who will give birth. Like many biblical prophesies, there are two layers of fulfillment. The nearer fulfillment points towards the coming birth of a son born to Isaiah. The timing of his birth heralds coming judgments against Ahaz’ enemies. This is the sign to Ahaz. But the later fulfillment also is fulfilled by a king and a maiden’s son. Like King Ahaz, King Herod is a wicked and maniacal king – willing to do anything to stay in power. And the young maiden pointed to is Mary, the mother of Jesus. But the Greek word used here, “parthenos” is more than a maiden. It always refers to a virgin and thus, this is a far greater sign – the sign fulfilled by Jesus’ birth. Many today laugh at the preposterous idea that a virgin could give birth. However, if we can believe the irrefutable evidence that God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1) is it really so hard for us to believe that God could arrange for His Son to be born of a virgin?

Second Point
What does God do when there is no good option?
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your[f] God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he[g] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.[h] 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.
