Summary of the impact of climate change on agriculture in India
1. Summary
Though all countries are affected by climate change, they are affected in different ways and
to different extents. Developing countries will be particularly badly hit if the global
temperature rises for three reasons - : geography (non-temperate latitudes), stronger
dependence on agriculture, fewer resources. In India the greatest impact will be on
agricultural yield due to extreme droughts in large part of the country. Erratic monsoon will
result in food shortage. Therefore, the need is to invest in skills, knowledge – heat and
drought resistant crops, ground water management, better infrastructure for water storage to
make the country more climate-resilient.
