History should not be forgotten or forbidden;
India is a home to various culture and its people.
It is important for each one of us in the nation to
know our civilisation, cultures and its people. We
must help and strive to unearth our ancient
civilisations and its history to create a true
identity in the World. A culture is something
that has come through generations and with
the bloodshed of its people. Cultures
must not be let to vanish overtime due to
our ignorances of our history. The
federal government of India must lay
more emphasis on
archeological
surveys and
excavations to
reconstruct our
history, and allocate
adequate funds for
pending projects. Cultures
are the strength of a nation,
let us not forget it.
Sindhu-Indu-Hindu. Sindhu is
a Sanskrit name of the river in
northern India, so is Indus,
Indu, and Hindu in other
languages widely known. The
people who lived around and
beyond the river Sindhu were
called as Inde,Indooi Indus,
and Hindus in various
languages. The land around
and beyond river Sindhu-Indu-
Hindu were called as Hindusthan in Persian
language which was commonly used during the
Mughal period prior to British rule which
primarily included northern India, and later whole
of modern India during pre-independence era.
The language that was spoken in this
region were known as Hind
and Hindi. Within our
own
peopl
e, we
called
the land as
Bharat, and
people as
Bharathiy, the
name relates to the
Bharata tribe of Rig
Veda. The
Puranas
mentioned
Bharat as the
geographical
entity from
Himalaya in North
and upto the seas of the
South. whatsoever the
history, the English who
ruled us many centuries
translated Hindusthan to
INDIA. Now, we are proud
Indians united by diverse cultures, traditions and
religions from Jammu and Kashmir to
Kanyakumari, and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh.
Since several millennia, people of our land lived
in an advanced civilisation. It is written in many
literatures of our country and the World. The

concrete proof of archeological expeditions in the
region disproved those who thought that our
literary works are mere poetic imagination.
Mohenjadro, Harappa, Dholavira, Ganeriawala
and Rakhigarhi some of the major sites that are
discovered related to our ancient civilisation so
far since pre-independence and post
independence.
And now we have discovered yet another
civilisation's proof in South Indian state of Tamil
Nadu. The project is yet to be completed by 2015
as per Government's statement.
Our people of ancient India flourished with
advanced civilisations many centuries ago, while
people from other parts of the world were yet
shepherds and nomads. It seems that more
emphasis on archaeology in India could lead to
the overhaul of the history known to the world till
date. New discoveries in our country could reveal
many of our ancient civilisation's facts and build
a true history. Thanks to the ASI's recent
discovery in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu for
unearthing a 4th Century to 3rd century BC urban
settlements.
In the year 2013-14 began a hunt for ancient
civilisation of southern India, a four member team
Archeological Survey of India (ASI) experts lead
by Superintendent K. Amarnath Ramakrishna
surveyed the Vaigai river banks from the its
source in Vellimalai in the Western ghats to
Aatrankarai near the sea. They explored upto
eight kilometre radius on either side of the banks.
The total river length is about 250 kms in length
flowing through five districts of Tamil Nadu, that
covered 500 villages.
In all these hard and tedious works of the ASI
team, they were able to collect archaeological
evidence from 293 locations, many of them were
potential habitation sites. They found burial sites,
temple sites, loose sculptures, hero stones with
elaborate Tamil Brahmi inscriptions. It was a
disappointment they could not find concrete
human settlements. But, they took a challenge to
prove false theoretical ideas by starting large-
scale river basin excavation. Even then, it was
further disappointment as they could not
authoritatively establish the existence of urban
human settlements on river banks of Vaigai.
After one year of survey, the ASI team decided to
focus on Keeladi, also called as Keezhadi, an area
of Sandhaiyur Village in Sivaganga district of
Tamil Nadu.
The ASI team struck its luck here in the first
excavation of 43 trenches of 4 x 4 feet
measurement, they found fine pottery with Tamil
Brahmi inscriptions, ring wells, an indication of
Harappan-like urban settlement, walls, platforms,
and large brick floors, flourishing antiquities
including ivory dices (known as Dayakattai in
Tamil and Paasa in hindi) used in games.
In the year 2016, the team excavated another 59
trenches of same measurements, they found
strong evidences of urban settlements such as

drainage systems made of terracotta pipes, and six
furnaces indicating industrial activity during that
period. A total of 5,600 artefacts were found in
this excavation. The findings of roman coins
proves that was trading between Romans and
ancient Tamils. Some of the items that were found
are ivory earlobes, ivory dice, gold beads,
Cholaand Pandyaperiod coins, rouletted-ware,
russetcoated ware, whitepainted black pottery,
decorated shell bangles, quartz beads, jasper
beads, carnelian and chalcedony; beads big
copper beads; and terracotta figurines. In the
lower depths of the quadrants were found a
variety of iron implements such as axes, daggers,
knives, nails and forceps, roof tiles embedded
with long iron nails, and black ware and red ware
from the Iron Age.
The Sangam literature (Tamil Academics) states
that Madurai was epicentre of bustling civilisation
where the whole world traded. Sangam literature
is one of the main sources used for documenting
the history of ancient Tamil country. Sangam is an
ancient academy that gathers poets and authors to
present and publish their works. This gathering
happened in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. ASI
has found many evidences relating to the Sangam
Period and literature. As per the literature it is
estimated that the three Sangam lasted for 9990
years. Further excavations could reveal Sangam
literature could be very much accurate in detail to
this city and civilisation
The team found 74 Tamil Brahmi inscriptions,
one of the significance of this was that they found
inscriptions on earthen pottery which is a sign of
a literate common people. There were poetic
Tamil names on the earthen pots that is mentioned
in the Sangam literature (Tamil Academics), the
practice of writing owner names on utensils are
still in vogue. Usually such inscriptions were
found in temples and stones. It was no doubt that
people lived in one of the great civilisations of the
ancient world.
Kharavela inscriptions of Odisha dating 130 BCE
in Hathikhumba tells us that there was a Tamil
Confederation at that time, and there was a big
kingdom of South with confederates. Scholars in
North India usually take archeological evidences
to support ancient or modern theories, and this
newly found evidences could prove them that
ancient Sangam literatures was not a poetic
imagination, but indeed a factual content.
Also, the findings have brought irrefutable proof
of an ancient tamil civilisation distinct from Vedic
Aryan Civilisation. There are more excavations
apart from this going on in the Tamil Nadu state
that might overhaul the history text books of
civilisation.
More interesting part to be continued in the next
issue due to space constraint ……
