Hello dear CISVers!
It is with great pleasure that we send you our second Pre Camp. Here you will find precious
information regarding the camp and (almost) everything you need to know to make the fun
come true! We are so excited to have you all at the Village and we’re sure this will be a
lifetime experience for all of us!

So pay close attention to the information bellow and don’t think twice before contacting us
to solve any of your doubts! ;)

The name of our camp is Where Is Our Balance?

Within the 28 days together we’ll be exploring as a theme the balance between all the
aspects surrounding sustainable development. Not only from the environmental point of
view. We will try to combine the social reality, the economic context and all the other
factors that build up a sustainable community.

That’s a huge step towards raising awareness in our future generations, right?

So we strongly suggest that you do a research on this theme and come well prepared to the
Camp. It is also good to introduce the theme to your kids, in a simple language so they can
understand. In this way when you get here we will all be in the same page. Deal?

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

If you come by plane your destination airport will be Aeroporto Internacional de Confins
(Airport Code: CNF).

If you arrive by any other means (leaving on a jet plane, spaceship, by foot, swimming,
hitchhike, horseback, etc) please contact us so that we can make special arrangements for
a meeting point.

Your latest arrival time to the airport should be Sunday, July 1st at 4:00pm. You will be
picked up by a host family or other CISV member who will take care of the kids to their host
families and the leaders and JCs to the agreed meeting point. We want all the leaders and
JCs to be at the agreed meeting point no later than 5:00pm.

So, on the arrival day (Sunday, July 1st) the children will go to host families where they will
stay until Tuesday (July 3rd) when they will be brought to the agreed meeting point at
6:00pm. The leaders and JCs will stay at the Campsite during this first two days in order to
prepare the Village.

Our departure date is on Saturday, July 28th. Please arrange your travel plans so that
you won’t have to leave earlier. We will provide transportation to the airport. Keep in mind
that it takes about 30 minutes from the Campsite to the airport and about 1 hour from the
city to the airport and that you must be there 3 hours prior to the departure time, so don’t
book your flight home before 11:00am!

IMPORTANT: If you arrive earlier or depart later, we’re able to host you with CISV
families for up to 2 nights before and after the Village. Please include this in your Travel
Information Form (TIF) so that we can arrange for host families.

Hello From The Staff

You must be wondering who we are and how do we look like, right? So here’s a few words
from us. We have other two staff members, but you will only meet them further ahead!
BRUNO MAFRA MACEDO

HELLOOOO! I'm Bruno, the Junior Staff of this
wonderful Village. I'm 20 years old, I study
International Relations and I'm quite old in
CISV. I've been a Village kid, JC and Leader a
couple times, so anything or doubts you have
concerning CISV I might help you. I live in Belo
Horizonte since I was born and I love this city.
It's got everything a big city has, but with a
                                            touch of small town.
For me CISV is not a job or a duty, but a
pleasure. My other hobbies are watching TV
series like House and Big Bang Theory, hanging
out with my friends and walking my dog. Her name is Duda and she's a gorgeous Retriever
Labrador.
I've got great expectations on this Village and I hope everyone to have an amazing time
here. Hope hearing from you soon, Bruno!!! =)

PEDRO BARROS

What’s up CISVers? My name is Pedro, but you can call me
Barros like my friends in Brazil do. I’m 21 years old. I was born
in an inner city of Minas Gerais called Ipatinga (in case you don’t
know, Minas Gerais is the State where Belo Horizonte is the
capital city). I left Ipatinga when I was 10 years old and started
living in lots of different cities. I’ve lived in six different cities
including two other countries (Australia and New Zealand) so
far. I have triplet brothers (noooo, they’re completely different.
I know you thought this). And I’ve also got a dog, his name is
Zeus and his breed is German Shepherd. I’m an university
student and I’m studying Business Administration. What do I
like to do? Let me think… not “like”, I actually loooove to travel
and I also like to watch good movies and spend time with my
friends and family. It’s my first time in CISV and from what I’m seeing I’m sure we will
enjoy it a lot. So far I guess that’s all. Soooo… fasten your seatbelts and have an excellent
trip to Brazil!
URSULA MATTIOLI

Hey Hey my beloved children, leaders and JCs!!!
My name is Ursula, I’m 20 and I’m super excited about being your staff in
this amazing Village! I study Economics and I’m currently working in an
Investment Company. I’m in CISV since I’m 10, when I was a village kid in
Norway and since then I participated in many other CISV programs. I love
travelling, getting to know different cultures, languages, places, food, going
to the movies, art, museums, sports, reading, partying and having fun!!! By
the way, I`m sure we`ll have lots of fun together and that we`ll make this
Village one of the best experiences of our lives. Lots of love!

NATÁLIA MAZONI (NAT)

Hey guys!!! My name is Natália (but you can call me
Nat), I’m 25 years old, I’m in CISV since 2005 and I
work as a lawyer at a law firm. I was born in Belo
Horizonte but raised in a small town named
Barbacena, where my parents still live.
I came back to BH to study and now I don’t want to
leave anymore! BH is such an amazing city! Well, I
guess you’ll see plenty of it with your own eyes.
I really love music and The Beatles are my favorite
band of all times. I’m also addicted to movies, books
and series like Homeland, The Walking Dead, Dexter
and Game of Thrones.
I have three dogs that I’m crazy about: a Pug named
Isaac, a English bulldog named Bartholomew and a
Schnauzer named Euzébio. I’m definitely a dog person (you don’t say?). I also collect mugs
and shot glasses from all over the world!
I’m so excited to have you all here at our Village. I’m sure we’ll have a great time together!
Brace yourselves, Village is coming! See you soon ;)
CAMP LANGUAGE

Although Brazilian people speak Portuguese (and this is the 6th most spoken language in
the world), the camp official language is English. That means all the leaders, Staff and JCs
must be able to understand and make themselves understood.
For the kids this is not a big deal because one of the really exciting thing about CISV is to
find out that it is possible to communicate with one another without knowing each other’s
languages. Plus, there’s no need to worry, there will always be time to translate everything
you need to your kids.

CAMP FORMS

This is VERY IMPORTANT! Please read carefully!

SEND the following forms as soon as possible to our camp’s official e-mail (see Contact

soon as possible, an e-mail containing the following information about each participant:

-Blood type
-Allergies and food restrictions

INSURANCE

All participants (Leaders, JCs and kids) must have a valid health, travel and accident
insurance to participate in the Village program, even if the delegation is coming from Brazil.
For more information about the insurance contact your local Chapter or National
Association.

JUST AS A REMINDER: any delegation to arrive in Brazil without the mentioned
insurance will be IMMEDIATELY sent back.

PASSPORT AND VISA REQUIREMENTS

All countries will need a valid passport to enter Brazil. Please make sure you and your kids
have passports that will not expire within 6 months after the end of the Village.

Also, some countries are required to have a valid visa to enter our country, such as USA
and Jordan. We took a step ahead and looked up the places where you and your kids can
enroll for a visa. Let us know if you need any help applying for it, we can provide you with
an invitation letter or any other requirements in case you need them to get your visa.

Other countries, please contact the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate in your country if you’re
concerned about the need for a visa or further information.
Also, it’s not mandatory, but the Brazilian government suggests that visitors take the
vaccines against Yellow Fever at least 10 (ten) days before coming to Brazil. Be cautious
and find the nearest health center in your city to take your vaccine.

GOALS
Where’s our balance? This question (and also our camp name) suggests a quest for balance, not only
regarding environmental ways, but also life in general. It means that, together, we will perform various
activities that will make us wonder: do we have a balance point? Is my balance point the same as my
friend’s? What do we need it for?

However, we cannot think of any of these questions without having our minds set on our goals.

So, these are the Village Programme Goals:
    ● Develop intercultural competence;
    ● Build an inclusive community through friendship;
    ● Develop positive attitudes towards others;
    ● Develop an interest in peace education.

But, we also have our own objectives (which can be expanded – and we certainly want that!!):
    ● Explore the theme of sustainable development, focusing on its 3 aspects (economic growth,
        social well-being and environmental protection);
    ● Make the participants think about their own limits and restrictions, searching for their own
        balance;
    ● Inspire the participants to promote a balance between the 3 aspects of sustainable
        development.

ACTIVITIES

As some of you may know, leaders and JC’s are responsible for planning all activities of our
Village. So, don’t forget to pack your creativity with you! We want activities to be really fun
and educating! If you already got something in mind, don’t hesitate bringing it. Let’s use as
much as we can of our imagination to mix our camp theme with all kinds of activities. If you
don’t feel so confident about that, ask our Staff crew, search the wonderful Gamebook
(available at resources.cisv.org) or ask any of your fellow leaders.

REMINDERS ABOUT PREPARATION

Every Delegation will present themselves and their country during their National Night.
Therefore, you need to prepare something such as national dance, songs, a play, a little
show, pictures of your families/pets/country/favorite dish, video, dramas, activities, games,
candies and goodies, traditions or whatever you feel like showing to your friends. We’re
pretty sure you’ll use all your creativity ;)

You might want to bring a national costume (kids love to trade them with their new friends,
so don’t make it too expensive). If you want to serve us your national food, you’ll be
welcome to do so. We can get almost all kind of food ingredients here in Brazil, but if you
need something very special you should bring it. Expenses for what the Staff buys for your
preparation will be paid by you when you arrive, so keep this in mind!
Your activity should take about 1 hour, though you will have as long as you want for your
national night (for example, if you want to play a national game/sport with us, you’ll have
the time for it. The activity we’re talking about here is the one that includes the things you
want to present to the kids, during which all the other kids won’t be active but only
watching your performance. Any questions? Let us know!

Plus, you need to prepare at least 80 scrapbooks in which you introduce yourself, the kids
and your country, so that every participant gets one (plus host families and whoever else
you want to give them to). Also, it is a good habit to give away some typical little presents
from your country for everyone at the end of your National Night.

During the Camp you will have time to practice before your National Night, but you need to
prepare everything at home beforehand.

EQUIPMENTS

At our campsite, we'll supply electronic devices and equipment for your use, such as
projector, sound system, cell phone, iPod cable and laptop. In case your National Night
requires any of these, ask us! We'll have a guitar, too, so hope for great lullabies!

TEMPERATURE/WEATHER

Belo Horizonte, just like most of Brazil, is in a tropical region. BUT, as we're 850m above
ocean, it can get a little cold. As the village will happen in July, Winter here, you can expect
temperatures around 20ºC. During daytime, it might be warmer (around 25ºC). During
night time and early morning, it's usually a little colder, around 15ºC till 10ºC. Don’t worry,
you won’t freeze to death! So, bring swimsuits and a nice and warm sweater. It doesn't
usually rain, so bring medicines, if you need, for dry weather.

FRIENDS WEBSITE

We kindly ask you and your whole delegation to sign up the FRIENDS Website
(friends.cisv.org). This is the official CISV social network and you will find our Village there.
After you’ve logged in, click in “Find Activity” -> “Village” -> “2012” -> ”Brazil” -> “V-2012-
002 Belo Horizonte View” -> “Can't find your name? Click here to register your
participation”. Fill in the blanks with your information and we’ll accept your participation.
Make sure everyone is registered so we can keep in touch for a long time!!

WHAT NOW?

Well, now that you have such important information on your hands let’s get to work and
prepare the best Village in the world!
If you feel like we didn’t talk about something on this PreCamp, don’t worry! PreCamp 3 is
coming soon bringing some other subjects we need to approach such as: what to bring and
what NOT to bring, more contents about our theme, money, etc... However, if you have any
doubts, don’t hesitate in contacting us!! (whereisourbalance@gmail.com). Also, there will a
be surprise to all of you... so hold your breaths and countdown to our next contact! See you
guys soon ;)

V 2012-002 brazil

  • 1. h ere i s W ? ou r ce bala n V-2012-002 BRA Belo Horizonte
  • 2. Hello dear CISVers! It is with great pleasure that we send you our second Pre Camp. Here you will find precious information regarding the camp and (almost) everything you need to know to make the fun come true! We are so excited to have you all at the Village and we’re sure this will be a lifetime experience for all of us! So pay close attention to the information bellow and don’t think twice before contacting us to solve any of your doubts! ;) The name of our camp is Where Is Our Balance? Within the 28 days together we’ll be exploring as a theme the balance between all the aspects surrounding sustainable development. Not only from the environmental point of view. We will try to combine the social reality, the economic context and all the other factors that build up a sustainable community. That’s a huge step towards raising awareness in our future generations, right? So we strongly suggest that you do a research on this theme and come well prepared to the Camp. It is also good to introduce the theme to your kids, in a simple language so they can understand. In this way when you get here we will all be in the same page. Deal? ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE If you come by plane your destination airport will be Aeroporto Internacional de Confins (Airport Code: CNF). If you arrive by any other means (leaving on a jet plane, spaceship, by foot, swimming, hitchhike, horseback, etc) please contact us so that we can make special arrangements for a meeting point. Your latest arrival time to the airport should be Sunday, July 1st at 4:00pm. You will be picked up by a host family or other CISV member who will take care of the kids to their host families and the leaders and JCs to the agreed meeting point. We want all the leaders and JCs to be at the agreed meeting point no later than 5:00pm. So, on the arrival day (Sunday, July 1st) the children will go to host families where they will stay until Tuesday (July 3rd) when they will be brought to the agreed meeting point at 6:00pm. The leaders and JCs will stay at the Campsite during this first two days in order to prepare the Village. Our departure date is on Saturday, July 28th. Please arrange your travel plans so that you won’t have to leave earlier. We will provide transportation to the airport. Keep in mind that it takes about 30 minutes from the Campsite to the airport and about 1 hour from the
  • 3. city to the airport and that you must be there 3 hours prior to the departure time, so don’t book your flight home before 11:00am! IMPORTANT: If you arrive earlier or depart later, we’re able to host you with CISV families for up to 2 nights before and after the Village. Please include this in your Travel Information Form (TIF) so that we can arrange for host families. • 6. BRUNO MAFRA MACEDO HELLOOOO! I'm Bruno, the Junior Staff of this wonderful Village. I'm 20 years old, I study International Relations and I'm quite old in CISV. I've been a Village kid, JC and Leader a couple times, so anything or doubts you have concerning CISV I might help you. I live in Belo Horizonte since I was born and I love this city. It's got everything a big city has, but with a touch of small town. For me CISV is not a job or a duty, but a pleasure. My other hobbies are watching TV series like House and Big Bang Theory, hanging out with my friends and walking my dog. Her name is Duda and she's a gorgeous Retriever Labrador. I've got great expectations on this Village and I hope everyone to have an amazing time here. Hope hearing from you soon, Bruno!!! =) PEDRO BARROS What’s up CISVers? My name is Pedro, but you can call me Barros like my friends in Brazil do. I’m 21 years old. I was born in an inner city of Minas Gerais called Ipatinga (in case you don’t know, Minas Gerais is the State where Belo Horizonte is the capital city). I left Ipatinga when I was 10 years old and started living in lots of different cities. I’ve lived in six different cities including two other countries (Australia and New Zealand) so far. I have triplet brothers (noooo, they’re completely different. I know you thought this). And I’ve also got a dog, his name is Zeus and his breed is German Shepherd. I’m an university student and I’m studying Business Administration. What do I like to do? Let me think… not “like”, I actually loooove to travel and I also like to watch good movies and spend time with my friends and family. It’s my first time in CISV and from what I’m seeing I’m sure we will enjoy it a lot. So far I guess that’s all. Soooo… fasten your seatbelts and have an excellent trip to Brazil!
  • 7. URSULA MATTIOLI Hey Hey my beloved children, leaders and JCs!!! My name is Ursula, I’m 20 and I’m super excited about being your staff in this amazing Village! I study Economics and I’m currently working in an Investment Company. I’m in CISV since I’m 10, when I was a village kid in Norway and since then I participated in many other CISV programs. I love travelling, getting to know different cultures, languages, places, food, going to the movies, art, museums, sports, reading, partying and having fun!!! By the way, I`m sure we`ll have lots of fun together and that we`ll make this Village one of the best experiences of our lives. Lots of love! NATÁLIA MAZONI (NAT) Hey guys!!! My name is Natália (but you can call me Nat), I’m 25 years old, I’m in CISV since 2005 and I work as a lawyer at a law firm. I was born in Belo Horizonte but raised in a small town named Barbacena, where my parents still live. I came back to BH to study and now I don’t want to leave anymore! BH is such an amazing city! Well, I guess you’ll see plenty of it with your own eyes. I really love music and The Beatles are my favorite band of all times. I’m also addicted to movies, books and series like Homeland, The Walking Dead, Dexter and Game of Thrones. I have three dogs that I’m crazy about: a Pug named Isaac, a English bulldog named Bartholomew and a Schnauzer named Euzébio. I’m definitely a dog person (you don’t say?). I also collect mugs and shot glasses from all over the world! I’m so excited to have you all here at our Village. I’m sure we’ll have a great time together! Brace yourselves, Village is coming! See you soon ;)
  • 8. CAMP LANGUAGE Although Brazilian people speak Portuguese (and this is the 6th most spoken language in the world), the camp official language is English. That means all the leaders, Staff and JCs must be able to understand and make themselves understood. For the kids this is not a big deal because one of the really exciting thing about CISV is to find out that it is possible to communicate with one another without knowing each other’s languages. Plus, there’s no need to worry, there will always be time to translate everything you need to your kids. CAMP FORMS This is VERY IMPORTANT! Please read carefully! SEND the following forms as soon as possible to our camp’s official e-mail (see Contact Person section above): - VDTIF 2000 - Delegation / JC Travel Information Form: one for each Delegation and JC - VDIF 2000 - Delegation Information Form: one for each Delegation - MIL - JC (Junior Counsellor) Information Form: one for each JC BRING the following forms with you to the camp (DO NOT SEND them now): - HF 2000 - Health Form: one for each kid, leader and JC - ALIF 2000 - Legal / Insurance Form: one for each leader - YLIF 2000 - Legal / Insurance Form: one for each kid -TWAL 2000 - Legal / Insurance Form: one for each JC All these forms must be filled out in English and you can find all of them at: www.cisv.org resources.cisv.org Beside this information (legal, health, camp and travel forms), we need you to send, as soon as possible, an e-mail containing the following information about each participant: -Blood type -Allergies and food restrictions -Special requirements -Medicines that the participants are currently taking INSURANCE All participants (Leaders, JCs and kids) must have a valid health, travel and accident insurance to participate in the Village program, even if the delegation is coming from Brazil.
  • 9. For more information about the insurance contact your local Chapter or National Association. JUST AS A REMINDER: any delegation to arrive in Brazil without the mentioned insurance will be IMMEDIATELY sent back. PASSPORT AND VISA REQUIREMENTS All countries will need a valid passport to enter Brazil. Please make sure you and your kids have passports that will not expire within 6 months after the end of the Village. Also, some countries are required to have a valid visa to enter our country, such as USA and Jordan. We took a step ahead and looked up the places where you and your kids can enroll for a visa. Let us know if you need any help applying for it, we can provide you with an invitation letter or any other requirements in case you need them to get your visa. Other countries, please contact the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate in your country if you’re concerned about the need for a visa or further information. Also, it’s not mandatory, but the Brazilian government suggests that visitors take the vaccines against Yellow Fever at least 10 (ten) days before coming to Brazil. Be cautious and find the nearest health center in your city to take your vaccine. Here are the addresses of a diplomatic representation of Brazil near you: Consulate General of Brazil in San Francisco 300 Montgomery Street - Suite 900 San Francisco, CA 94104 Tel: 415-981-8170 Fax: 415-981-3628 E-mail: brazilsf@brazilsf.org Homepage: www.brazilsf.org Jurisdiction:States of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and in the State of California, all the counties not included in the jurisdiction of Los Angeles. • 10. Where’s our balance? This question (and also our camp name) suggests a quest for balance, not only regarding environmental ways, but also life in general. It means that, together, we will perform various activities that will make us wonder: do we have a balance point? Is my balance point the same as my friend’s? What do we need it for? However, we cannot think of any of these questions without having our minds set on our goals. So, these are the Village Programme Goals: ● Develop intercultural competence; ● Build an inclusive community through friendship; ● Develop positive attitudes towards others; ● Develop an interest in peace education. But, we also have our own objectives (which can be expanded – and we certainly want that!!): ● Explore the theme of sustainable development, focusing on its 3 aspects (economic growth, social well-being and environmental protection); ● Make the participants think about their own limits and restrictions, searching for their own balance; ● Inspire the participants to promote a balance between the 3 aspects of sustainable development. ACTIVITIES As some of you may know, leaders and JC’s are responsible for planning all activities of our Village. So, don’t forget to pack your creativity with you! We want activities to be really fun and educating! If you already got something in mind, don’t hesitate bringing it. Let’s use as much as we can of our imagination to mix our camp theme with all kinds of activities. If you don’t feel so confident about that, ask our Staff crew, search the wonderful Gamebook (available at resources.cisv.org) or ask any of your fellow leaders. REMINDERS ABOUT PREPARATION Every Delegation will present themselves and their country during their National Night. Therefore, you need to prepare something such as national dance, songs, a play, a little show, pictures of your families/pets/country/favorite dish, video, dramas, activities, games, candies and goodies, traditions or whatever you feel like showing to your friends. We’re pretty sure you’ll use all your creativity ;) You might want to bring a national costume (kids love to trade them with their new friends, so don’t make it too expensive). If you want to serve us your national food, you’ll be welcome to do so. We can get almost all kind of food ingredients here in Brazil, but if you need something very special you should bring it. Expenses for what the Staff buys for your preparation will be paid by you when you arrive, so keep this in mind!
  • 11. Your activity should take about 1 hour, though you will have as long as you want for your national night (for example, if you want to play a national game/sport with us, you’ll have the time for it. The activity we’re talking about here is the one that includes the things you want to present to the kids, during which all the other kids won’t be active but only watching your performance. Any questions? Let us know! Plus, you need to prepare at least 80 scrapbooks in which you introduce yourself, the kids and your country, so that every participant gets one (plus host families and whoever else you want to give them to). Also, it is a good habit to give away some typical little presents from your country for everyone at the end of your National Night. During the Camp you will have time to practice before your National Night, but you need to prepare everything at home beforehand. EQUIPMENTS At our campsite, we'll supply electronic devices and equipment for your use, such as projector, sound system, cell phone, iPod cable and laptop. In case your National Night requires any of these, ask us! We'll have a guitar, too, so hope for great lullabies! TEMPERATURE/WEATHER Belo Horizonte, just like most of Brazil, is in a tropical region. BUT, as we're 850m above ocean, it can get a little cold. As the village will happen in July, Winter here, you can expect temperatures around 20ºC. During daytime, it might be warmer (around 25ºC). During night time and early morning, it's usually a little colder, around 15ºC till 10ºC. Don’t worry, you won’t freeze to death! So, bring swimsuits and a nice and warm sweater. It doesn't usually rain, so bring medicines, if you need, for dry weather. FRIENDS WEBSITE We kindly ask you and your whole delegation to sign up the FRIENDS Website (friends.cisv.org). This is the official CISV social network and you will find our Village there. After you’ve logged in, click in “Find Activity” -> “Village” -> “2012” -> ”Brazil” -> “V-2012- 002 Belo Horizonte View” -> “Can't find your name? Click here to register your participation”. Fill in the blanks with your information and we’ll accept your participation. Make sure everyone is registered so we can keep in touch for a long time!! WHAT NOW? Well, now that you have such important information on your hands let’s get to work and prepare the best Village in the world!
  • 12. If you feel like we didn’t talk about something on this PreCamp, don’t worry! PreCamp 3 is coming soon bringing some other subjects we need to approach such as: what to bring and what NOT to bring, more contents about our theme, money, etc... However, if you have any doubts, don’t hesitate in contacting us!! (whereisourbalance@gmail.com). Also, there will a be surprise to all of you... so hold your breaths and countdown to our next contact! See you guys soon ;)
