1. About the Institute : The opening up of the Indian economy through reforms
introduced in the late 1980's led Indian Capital Market to experience rapid changes and
progress. It was visible that adequately qualified and knowledgeable professionals in the
Indian capital market were in short supply. Under these circumstances the erstwhile Unit
Trust of India (UTI), sought to fill this gap by establishing an institute that could address
these issues and contribute to the orderly development of the market through training
and research.
As the result of the move taken by UTI, Indian Institute of Capital Markets (formerly UTI
Institute of Capital Markets) came into being as part of UTI in the sprawling, modern and
new millennium city, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The Institute was inaugurated by the then
Honourable Union Finance Minister late Prof. Madhu Dandavate on June 22, 1990. With a
view to providing academic character and operational independence, the management
of UTI decided to promote it as an autonomous Institution. Therefore, the UTI ICM
became a trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 on March 6, 1993 and a
separate society was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 on June 25,
1992. Since then the Institute is governed and managed by the trustees who are
distinguished academicians and market professionals.
