Eutrophication comes from the Greek word "eutrophos" meaning well–nourished. In other words,
this natural process found in water occurs as a result of additional rich nutrients forming a flourish
in plant production.
At this moment in time, eutrophication is causing worldwide devastation to not only aquatic life, but
the fishing industry. The release of nutrients into fresh water lakes, rivers and reservoirs leads to
excessive growth of three different plant species:
a) Open water algae (phytoplankton)
b) Attached algae (periphyton)
c) Higher plants (macrophytes)

This is an example of phytoplankton as it is suspended freely on the surface of most rivers and
lakes. Now, of course, the open water algae have optimum solar energy, a sufficient supply of water
from below and carbon dioxide which is absorbed from either the water or sediments.
Photosynthesis is more likely to happen and trigger the production of algal blooming [Fig 2] as
oxygen will stimulate plant respiration.
I believe that low dissolved oxygen (DO) is the most destructive effect of eutrophication, depriving
aquatic life of food and natural habitats. Nevertheless high concentrations of DO may assist algae in
their production, so adequate proportions are essential to ensure a constant environment. Other
factors associated with this process include too much organic matter which is made up of carbon
atoms and carbon–carbon, C–C bonds. This indirectly effects fish life as eggs and food sources are
smothered.

In the cold, dark and mysterious forest is where she lived. Vanessa is teenager whose summer is

mom who loves baking when Vanessa is at school or work. "He should be coming home in about a

She was a girl who liked adventure and exploring but she never got to go past the fence in her
backyard which is mostly a forest. Today was a great day for exploring. She decided that it had been
a long time since she has gone into the forest. But when she headed out she forgot to get her
adventure bag. She got the adventure bag from her dad on her tenth birthday. It contains a flashlight,
water bottle, compass, a blanket, and two granola bars if she get lost or hungry and thirsty. She
decided to go on without it because her mother might ask questions and tell her to stay inside
because it's cold and almost time for dinner. When she reached the fence she found a narrow path
which was hidden behind these two redwood trees. She took the path hoping to find something neat

When one hears someone say the word "Berkeley", there are many different ideas that come to one's
mind, such as Berkeley as in a girl's name, the famous Berkeley University, and much more;
however, of the many Berkeley's in this world, it is evident that the Berkeley Pit is of the most
serious environmental problem. A former open pit copper mine, Berkeley Pit, is now one of the
most closely observed disaster in our nature today.
The cause of the development of the chemical disaster traces back to the 1950s. As the Industrial
Revolution took place, mining took a significant role in city life. According to the Berkeley Pit

Ultimately, about 1,000,000,000 tons of material were mined from the Berkeley Pit" (Wikipedia,
2015). Therefore, the local problem of specifically finding an alternative to underground mining was
solved successfully. Although this original problem was solved, this brought about another serious
issue that still continues today. No longer being able to extract a good amount from the mines
anymore, the mines of Berkeley Pit were finally closed. Now, until this point of time, the Berkeley
Pit was just a gigantic hole in the ground, but soon enough the pit started to fill with groundwater.
To keep the pit from flooding, the Anaconda Company had to install water pumps in which inhibited
the rapid rate of the filling of water. By 1983, however, they eventually shut down all the water
pumps and left the pit unattended. The metals and minerals still in the presence of the mine
dissolved into the groundwater and rain and created a body of water that is as toxic as lemon juice.
No fish or organisms, except for algae, could survive such extreme toxicity.
How Science was applied To be more specific, one must learn more about the relationship between
the process in which this disaster with chemicals happened and the toxicology. As stated by
Pellicori, Gammons, and Poulson in 2005, the Berkley Pit when they analyzed the sample mine

Negative Effects On Animals In Their Environment
Both countries have experienced polluted waters which have had negative effects on animals in their
environment. For example, in 2007, multiple sea otters were found dead in the Pacific Ocean and a
marine–wildlife veterinarian, Melissa Miller, determined that these otters were poisoned by a toxin
called microcystin, which is produced by blue–green algae. When fertilizers and human sewage run
into rivers and lakes, these toxins start to appear because nutrients are added that cause the growth
of algae known as "super blooms". However, sea otters don't go to the areas these blooms occur in
like polluted rivers and lakes. Miller then did some research and found that super blooms occurred
frequently in a lake, Pinto Lake, that eventually drains into the area of the Pacific Ocean where the
dead otters were found. The toxins were also found to be in shellfish which in a part of the otters'
main diet, so after this Miller concluded that the toxin travelled downstream in the ocean from
polluted lakes, where they found their way into shellfish, and eventually ended up killing the otters.
A similar event occurred in South Africa around the same time frame, but this involved crocodiles.
Toward the end of 2008, rangers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) reported that around 170
crocodiles were found dead in the Olifants river with a similar estimate a year later in 2009.
Veterinarians who performed the autopsies for these crocodiles determined the cause of death to be
pansteatitis which is a disease based on nutrients that paralyzes animals leaving them to drown or
starve to death, but it rarely affects animals in the wild. After some of the veterinarians did more
research and analyzed the crocodiles' fat tissue, they discovered that phytoplankton was the source
of the high intake of fats in these crocodiles. However, the crocodiles don't feed on it directly; so
they did more research and found that downstream of the Olifants was Lake Massingir which is
known for plankton blooms because of eutrophication. In the end, the veterinarians came to the
conclusion that the silver carp, a fish that was purposely introduced into Lake Massingir, accidently
escaped and found their way to where these crocodiles

Outwash and till are similar but different at the same time and this is why they are both deposited by
glaciers, but the way they are deposited is what makes them different. Till is simply the sediment
left by the ice, outwash is deposited by the running water coming off of the melting glacier. Because
water can sort sediment, and ice cannot, that is why the till is unsorted. Sorting just means when the
rocks are sorted by size, bigger pieces together on the bottom, smaller pieces together on top.
Glaciers are constructive and deconstructive they are deconstructive because they tear up land and
the glacier does not stop for anything but it is easy to avoid. Glaciers erode the land and create
landforms such as kames, eskers, and drumlins those terms will be explained a little bit later.
Glaciers create valleys by shearing away the mountainside and moving it away. Some of the
landforms that glaciers produce are drumlins, terminal moraine, outwash plain, and an erratic.
Drumlins are elongated, teardrop–shaped hills of rock, sand, and gravel that formed under moving
glacier ice. A terminal moraine is where the glacier reaches its max and starts receding making a
deposit of till. An outwash plain is a flat area made by meltwater carrying outwash from the leading
edge of the glacier. An erratic is a rock or boulder carried from a place where the Rock is common

Cabin On Peavy
Eating a delicious and creamy dish of biscuits and gravy, I look over to the light blue wall where my

The best moments were playing tag like a psycho maniac on crack with all of my friends. At the

The majority of the world freshwater is shallow and confined to lowland areas (Beklioglu et al.,
2011). These shallow polymictic lakes usually with a depth of less than three meters are an
important natural resource and facilitate numerous services, as result having a crucial economical
and conservation value (Beklioglu et al., 2011). High quality of these lakes has become a political
obligation with initiatives such as the European commission's water frame work directive
implemented both locally and internationally. Therefore in order to maintain this value the
management restoration of degraded or low quality lakes is a widespread and key process. However
understanding the fundamental physical, biological and chemical aspects of the ecosystem is a
crucial starting block in these restoration process.
Shallow lakes have become the archetypical example of ecosystems with alternative stable states, a
clear state dominated by and submerged flora, and a turbid state with high phytoplankton biomass
(Scheffer et al., 1993; Scheffer and Jeppesen, 1998). Unlike turbid lakes, clear shallow lakes are
often dominated by submerged macrophytes which facilitate high biodiversity, high water quality
and provide higher lake aesthetic qualities, they are thus considered a crucial element of a healthy
clear shallow lake ecosystem. As a result from a conservation and economic standpoint the clear

The Low Water Levels in Lake Bridgeport
Lake Bridgeport was built in 1930 for flood control, water storage and recreation. Tarrant County
owns the land and water that makes the lake. There is a spillway that takes water through the Trinity
River to Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth. This year has been a rough year for Lake Bridgeport
with three digit temperatures and draining water to the other lakes. Since one of the purposes to
build Lake Bridgeport was for storage, The Tarrant County water district approved to let out 20,000
acre feet of water from Lake Bridgeport to prevent the other lakes to be low. "But 2013 is anything
but a normal year. Today, what once was a scenic lake is covered in chest–high weeds. " Boaters and
fisherman enjoy going to Lake Bridgeport during the summer. But in the summer of 2013 the boat
ramps were unusable so the number of residents going to the lake dropped. There are dead fish
floating to the shoreline as well as many other wildlife animals. The lake tested positive for Zebra
Mussel larva, which is shell like creatures that are very sharp and stick to boats, anchors and docks.
The Mussels are very dangerous for the lake environment, but they also eat bacteria so they could
help the lake water clear up. If no water is drained out of Lake Bridgeport then the residents of
Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth could possibly run out of drinking water.
Problem: The Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day, but how is it supposed to be any fun
when the lake is drying up each day.

Cultural eutrophication involves the artificial influx of nutrients into an aquatic ecosystem and can
have severe effects on the organisms that live within the ecosystem (Anders and Ashley 2007). The
most common source of these influxes of nutrients comes in the form of surrounding terrestrial
runoff and atmospheric input, thus being very sensitive to seasonal inputs (Guildford and Hecky
2000). Within the last few decades there has been a new process arise from the other end of the
spectrum, termed cultural oligotrophication, which is actually the opposite of eutrophication; it is
the result of a human induced reduction of the naturally occurring nutrients that occur in an aquatic
system (Anders and Ashley 2007). Waters affected by this type of oligotrophication tend to be very
clear and lack the nutrients that they would have had they not been altered to be aesthetically
pleasing to the human eye, thus having poor biological productivity (Anders and Ashley 2007).
Understanding that we need to manage lakes in a way that is in the best interest of the lake, and not

My Summer Vacation Essay
My summer vacation this year if you even call it a vacation has been insane. My summer started out
normal until the day I to went visit my dad. My parents had recently gotten a divorce so they no
longer lived together. It all started with the secret that my dad had no idea about. Just before I got in
the plane my mom gave me a hatchet, which I had no idea what I would ever use it for. I was getting
there on a bush plane with a very friendly pilot. He even let me drive for a while, every thing was
fine until he started having problems, big problems. Seconds later he was silent. Silent. That's when
everything went wrong. It took me awhile to figure out what's happening but I made somewhat of a
plan to ¨land¨ the plane. Once the plane ran out of gas I crash land into a lake somewhere in the
Canadian forest. Insane.
As soon as the plane hit the water it was a race to surface before my lungs filled with lake water.
The journey to the shore was tiring and bye the time I finally woke up from who knows how long
my face was fried and mosquitoes were eating me alive. Millions of things were flying through my
mind at that time, the pilot, where am, what do I do, food, and shelter. I didn't even know where to
start. Food. I knew I needed food before I could do anything. I grabbed a sip of water from the lake
hesitant at first. The pilot. I decided I needed the water so I got some anyways trying not to think of
the pilot. As I stumbled up the hill trying to keep the lake in sight at all times I found some sort of
berries and started shoving my mouth full of whatever those berries were. Once I got back to the
lake I realized eating too many of those berries made me feel like my stomach was tied in knots and

First time? No. Last time? Possibly. The rays of July sun pound down, scorching my pale flesh, but I
don't feel it. Fear augments inside me; unsure my limits, I persist.

breeze, yet all the campers are still full of joy. All except me. I stripp off my towel, revealing my
pale, goose–bump ridden skin and a thin black bathing suit.
My mom is staring out at the lake, the shining sun hitting her sunscreen smudged face, looking
chipper, she reaches down, to pet the dorkus, fuzzy not so white miniature poodle, Totoro, who
reflects the same emotion.
I look to my dad, desperately trying to hide the fear that was spewn across my face; he looks at me
and smiles, a confident smile, obviously not reading the terror I managed to hide.

My Experience In My Life
My mind was buzzing. What had just happened? In the distance, I saw cars driving by completely
unaware of what happened, how I felt. Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I was
crying hysterically from not knowing what had just happened in my life. I opened my eyes finding
myself tilted on the passenger's door. I didn't know if I was sleeping and that I was stuck in this
nightmare or if this was actually reality. I smelled the car's engine. It was definitely reality. On June
27th, 2017, my life has been impacted greatly to what could have cost my mother and I's life. The
fault of this crash came from a 19–year old boy. He wasn't concentrating on the roads. He should've
stopped at the stop sign at the four way intersection. But he didn't. He didn't because he was high on
drugs. That pretty much explains the reason of his fault. This accident gave me visual proof that

The environmental risks that accompany fracking are potentially hazardous. In order to frack,
thousands of acres of forests need destroyed to allow roadways the space they need to exist (Lampe

work important physico– chemical and biological parameters were measured to know the present
scenario of the lake. Among physico– chemical parameters the water temperature, transparency,
total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, pH, nitrate and phosphate were taken into
consideration while in biotic factors, the qualitative and quantitative estimation of phytoplankton,
zooplankton and fishes was made. The water temperature varied from 10.0 0C in January, 2007 to
23.4 0C in June, 2011. The Secchy transparency ranged between 35.0 cm during January 2007 and
410 cm during December, 2011. The total dissolved solids varied between 160 mg/ l in April, 2007
and 536 mg/ l in June, 2008. The dissolved oxygen concentration at water surface varied from 3.0
mg/ l during January, 2007 to 12.5 mg/ l during May, 2009 throughout the experiment period. The
total alkalinity of lake water was found between 102 mg/ l during January, 2008 and 240 mg/ l
during June, 2011. The pH of lake water varied from 6.9 in April, 2008 to 9.8 July, 2011. The nitrate
was found between 0.12 mg/l

Reflection Paper
During the summer of 2017 I worked on two different internships or projects. Both of the
internships were completely different from the other. in one I work at a computer all day and the
other I would spend out in the field working hands on with different equipment. I got to experience
both ends of the spectrum of natural resource science. Both internships were helpful in helping me
figure out which fields of natural resources that I was interested in, and which I might be interested
in pursuing for future study and possible future job fields.
The first internship that I worked on was a grant that was contracted to the Central Lakes College,
and more specifically to Kent Montgomery, by the S.W.C.D. (the Soil Water Conservation District).
In this project / grant I worked with Kevin Gohman and we were asked to go to a set list of lakes in
Crow Wing County, and one river in Aitkin county, to take samples of the water and to record data
from the lake including: Phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and the amount of dissolved
oxygen in the water. We were also asked to record the clarity of the lake using a secchi disk, as well
as record the appearance of the water judged by the unaided eye and a list of colors they provided.
