the K-6 curriculum.
It promotes healthy lifestyle choices,
social justice, diversity, supportive
environments and physical activity, in
turn improving quality of life and
wellbeing.

2. The Department of Health and
Ageing recommends that 5-12 year
olds achieve 60 minutes of moderate
and vigorous physical activity per day
and discovered that 31% of children
are not meeting these
recommendations.

3. According to the Board of Studies
PDHPE K-6 Syllabus, it is an important
key learning area within the primary
curriculum as it:
• encourages an understanding and
valuing of self and others
• promotes physical activity
• emphasises informed decisionmaking, leading to effective and
responsible action.

4. According to the Australian bureau
of statistics 2007 survey, it is estimated that 67% of young people aged 16-24 will
experience depression in any year.
Factors that can reduce this risk include social
support, the presence of a supportive adults,
family cohesion, good interpersonal
relationships and a strong sense of self, which
are all promoted in the PDHPE curriculum.

5. It has been proven that there is an increasingly
evident correlation between well nourished and
physically active students reaching their
academic potential and exhibiting positive
behaviours in the classrooms.
Therefore, among other reasons, it is important
that we place a higher degree of importance
on PDHPE and its benefits throughout
the schooling lives of children.
