1. Types of volcanoes:
There are volcanoes on land and under the sea.
There are three types of volcanoes:
Active volcanoes erupted and can erupt again.
Dormant volcanoes are sleeping.
Extinct volcanoes can't erupt again.
2. Kilauea is an active volcano in Hawaii. It's the most active
volcano in the world. The island of Hawaii is growing bigger and
bigger because of the eruptions.
Arenal is an active volcano in Costa Rica. Tourists go to see the
volcano at nigth.
Mount Fuji in Japan is dormant at the moment. It's last eruption
was in 1707.
Anatahan is an island in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists said it
was extinct but it erupted in 2003.
3. Vesuvius is an extinct volcano.
It' s in Italy.
There was a terrible eruption in the past.
When Vesuvius eruptied there was a lot of ash. It was impossible to breath and a lot
of people died.
The ash covered the city of Pompeii.
Two men discovered the ruins of the city in1595.
They did lots of excavations and they discovered houses, streets, shops, sculptures,
paintings...
Today lots of people from all over the world visit the ruins of Pompeii every year.
4. The underwater volcanoes can grow so big that islands form.
The Galapagos islands are volcanic islands, they were formed under the sea.They are near the coa
of Ecuador. There are 13 big islands and 6 small islands. There are still eruptions in the Galapagos
islands.
