In this assignment you will review an authentic and recent environmental issue, the Flint water crisis. This week you will complete a 3-4 page written summary of three documents; choose one a recognized media report on the crisis, one research paper, and a government report. Compare and contrast the three reports on the water crisis. Critique the articles and look for bias. In addition, touch upon the following questions: Did the media article accurately cover the topic? Did the technical report provide statistically significant findings? Were the social justice issues covered? please 3-4 pages. Solution Since the Flint water crisis has been ongoing since 2014, a number of media reports need to be studied to accurately critique the issue. The general trend can be noted from referring to the Associated Press/ Detroit News is that the issue was focussed off and on until late 2015. Also, the reports did not carry out an in-depth investigations or statistical reports and expert opinions on the matter were not discussed. In addition, initial reports did not mention the names of the defaulting officials. Also strong articles were published post declaration of the state of emergency. Even at this time, most of the articles were polictically biased and speculative rather than objective suggesting that Michigan/Republicans/Racist elements purposefully poisoned its children rather than stating facts. Prompt and investigative reporting could have lead to stronger action against the officials and remedial measures to be taken a lot before. The Virginia Tech Research Paper gave the impression that it carried out a thorough investigation of not just the source of water and its pollutants but also carried out interviews of the residents. The gravity of the situation and its corresponding impacts were fully studied. The audit and its resulting report clearly stated that the water still had high concentration of lead which contradicted the official government reports. The statistics questioned the authenticity of the government reports. These reports did not cover any issues related to social justice. The reports by Michigan Government do show the corrective measures taken by the governent including distributing sampling kits and filtration systems set up wherever necessary. However, these reports essentially focus on the corrective measures taken, they do not throw light on whether or not the crisis is resolved by the addition of these corrective measures. The final report reflects the pollutants at reduced levels and talks about the environmental injustice. However it does not show any evidence of social justice being served. Infact, social justice is not spoken about at all in the final report. In my opinion, the media has been instrumental in this matter. Also, the issue of government negligence, unpreparedness at the time and delay in action hasn\'t been appropriately highlighted. .
