Ernest Hemingway was born in a Queen Anne Victorian house in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899. The restored home serves as a museum that highlights Hemingway's early life. It contains inviting rooms like the entry hall, parlor, library, and kitchen where his family spent time. Ernest was born in his mother Grace's bedroom on the second floor. restored to its former glory
On a busy street in Oak Park,
there is a house that seems like
any other but is actually the
birthplace of author Ernest
Hemingway (1899-1961).
This is the home that Ernest
lived in until he was 6
3. Open the beautiful front double doors and step into the
entry hall. It is large and inviting, and leads to the parlor
to the left, the library straight ahead, and the stairs to
second floor. Marcelline Hemingway (Ernest's sister) has
indicated that there was another small room, in between
the first and second floors that served as a room for her
father to see his medical patients.
4. ●The inviting fireplace _ set off by flowered
carpet that was typical of the time
● Pink and green wall covering
●Genuine Notthingham lace curtains
●The white plaster cornice at the ceiling
●Its rose relief pattern _ reflected in the carpet.
This space served as a music, prayer and study

5. THE KITCHEN
Grace Hemingway (Mother)
seldom appeared here.
She had been taught by her
mother to be a professional
woman, one who could afford
to hire others to do the cooking,
laundry, house cleaning, baby
sitting, and other household
chores.
6. From the stairs off the kitchen, guests will
arrive on the second floor. On the right is
the maid's room, which houses an account
of the family's possessions handwritten by
Grace in 1902. To the left is Grace's
room, which is where Ernest was born.
On the wall closest to the hall hang a copy
of the author's birth certificate and a
photo of him at 1 year old.
