What does “Islam” mean? The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”

1,2Have you not seen/thought how your Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the
Nurturer, the Sustainer] dealt with the army of elephant?47 Did He not confound
their filthy plans?
3-5And He sent against them clusters of clouds that rained pebbles of fire and
large drops of rain; He sent them a storm and made them like leaves chewed upon.
(19/105, Al-Fil/1-5)
47 The Companions of the Elephant, according to the Qur’an, is a people that was
destroyed by Allah due to their malice plots. According to Arab and Islamic accounts, “the
Companions of the Elephant” was the name given to the army that was commanded by Abrasa, the
Yemen viceroy of Kingdom of Aksum of Abyssinia, and used an elephant brought from Abyssinia
before themselves to boost their glory.
According to the historical accounts, Abrasa, who was the viceroy of Yemen for the Kingdom
of Aksumof Abyssinia in the middle of the 6th Century, saw the respect shown by Arabs to the Kaaba
and commissioned an ostentatious cathedral in the city of San, named “Al-Qullays” for religious,
political and economic purposes, and invited Arabs to visit the cathedral with a notice. While this
invitation failed to draw attention of Arabs, Abrasa’s cathedral was stained by an Arab for the
purpose of insulting. Furious upon this, Abrasa drove his army to Mecca to demolish the Kaaba. This
incident is named “the Incident of the Elephant” and the year the incident took place is named “the
