• To communicate our work to our peers

• Varies by discipline

Dissertation?
• Cut out the dissertation, editors do not need
to see your research
• Tell a story instead of documenting the
conversation
• Look at your bookshelf for places likely to
publish your work

• Often quicker than monograph
• More concise for our work
• Sometimes preferred in particular fields
over books

• Do your homework - what do they publish.
• Follow the submissions guide for authors.

of the past, get used to it.

17. Practical Approach
• Schedule writing sessions
• 5-6 times a week, at least for an hour
• Be strict with yourself
• Listen to your thoughts
• Pay attention to negativity
• Try to be positive

• Think about your subject
• Shut off the inner critic
• Write for 10 minute bursts without stopping
• Write fast if you can, but go slow when
thinking of purpose, direction, audience
