2. INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
History
Photoshop was developed in 1987 by the American brothers Thomas (PhD student-
University of Michigan) and John Knoll. They sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems
Incorporated in 1988. Thomas Knoll, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display
gray scale images on a monochrome display. This program called Display, caught the attention
of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended that
Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image editing program. In 1988, Thomas took six-month break
from his study to collaborate with his brother on the program. Thomas renamed the program
ImagePro, but the name was already taken. Later that year, Thomas renamed his program
Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute
copies of the program with a slide scanner which is a “total of about 200 copies of Photoshop
were shipped this way.
During this time, John travelled to Silicon Valley and gave a demonstration of the
program to engineers at Apple and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. Both showings were
successful, and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988. While
John worked on plug-ins in California, Thomas remained in Ann Arbor writing code. Photoshop
1.0 was released on 19 February 1990 for Macintosh exclusively. The Barneyscan version
included advanced color editing features that were stripped from the first Adobe shipped version.
The handling of color slowly improved with each release from Adobe and Photoshop quickly
became the industry standard in digital color editing.

15. ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE
Advantages using Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is used to edit the digital image application. It helps to improve the quality of a
photograph. It is the assistant with the artists who rely on Photoshop to make the artwork and the
students also can learn Photoshop in Image Editing classes. Photoshop can improve our skills. It
is possible to clear up the blemishes and the imperfections in the photos while we can remove
and change the backgrounds in the photos. The images can be altered to fix the faults so the
photographs can be given a professional look when a standard camera is used and new artwork
images can be created and edited.
It is very easy to begin editing the photo Adobe Photoshop helps you to reduce the red
eye or to whiten the teeth with the click of a button. You can adjust the skin tones of people in
your pictures. Most of the edits regularly done on the photos can be completed with a single
click. There is no professional training is needed to complete the complex tasks like adjusting
skin tone. Adobe Photoshop can be used to import the videos and the photos into the software
quickly and easily. Everything will be organized in a neat and orderly way on the screen, when
we are deal with hundreds or thousands of photos and videos, it will be easier to find the ones we
need and use them. So, it is easy to handle numerous videos and photos.
Disadvantages using Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is relatively simple to use but it is not a program designed for the beginners. It
is primarily a photo-editing program for the professionals that plan on editing many photos on a
regular basis. There are many different tools that do very different things so it will take long time
to learn how to use each one correctly.
Adobe Photoshop is not free. It is proprietary software, meaning its source code is a
secret, Source code is the code in which any computer program is written by the human
programmers. Adobe Photoshop is relatively expensive. When compared with other photo-
editing software, it has so many features and it is thus regarded as the industry standard in the
16. graphic designing. Beginners that do not have any importance to use this software will spend
much more for Adobe Photoshop when they are not plan on editing the photos every day.
Most beginners will not begin to touch the functionality of this program, and they could
get what they need from another program. Many people who are unfamiliar with editing the
photos in Adobe Photoshop and this will make the advanced functionality will be useless for
them. There are many free and lower cost graphics and photo editors. They are available for the
casual users and the enthusiasts who do not need all of the powerful features Photoshop offers.
Adobe Photoshop requires a well-equipped computer. It is a heavyweight program, and many of
the tools are computationally intensive. It takes up a large space of room on your computer as
well as a RAM memory.
CONCLUSION
Adobe Photoshop is a seriously powerful photo and image editing application. Part of the Adobe
suite of productivity software. Photoshop is considered by many to be a benchmark in the world
of professional digital image solutions. Photoshop is not a drawing program where it is an image
editing tool, not a design tool. Although it is possible to use Photoshop to design and construct
original graphics, but it is still difficult and limited to be used for this type of work. To create
original images, Adobe provides other specialist programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
Image Ready.
The real power of Photoshop is in working with existing images. Typical tasks include
treating and manipulation, compositing, converting to different formats, printing and so on.
Photoshop is very strong in the world of printed media and is popular with newspapers and other
publishers.
Photoshop tends to work well with other applications. As well as integrating seamlessly
with other Adobe products such as Premiere and Illustrator, Photoshop formats are also widely
recognized and able to be imported into programs such as Macromedia Fireworks and Corel
Draw. Photoshop is so feature rich that it does take a while to learn all the ins and outs. Do not
expect to become proficient overnight. However the interface is well set out and quite intuitive.
17. The target market for Photoshop is the professional world, and this is reflected in the price where
it is one of the expensive packages of its type. Cheaper versions are available such as Photoshop
LE but lose many of the important features.
