2. The Game and Field
FIELDHOCKEYRULES
All games will be played at the Cabot Center.
Game Length: A game will consist of two (2) 20-minute periods (running time). A 3-minute
interval will separate each period. The game may be shortened at the discretion of the
Intramurals Supervisor.
All ties at the end of regulation will be ties. During the playoffs, ties will be decided by a 3-
minute sudden-death overtime period. If, at the end of the period the game is still tied,
subsequent 3-minute periods will be played until a goal is scored.
Mercy Rule: All games with a 5-goal differential with five or fewer minutes remaining will be
ended.
A team is comprised of 6 players. A team must have a minimum of five players to begin play.
Players are required to wear mouth guards. (Mouth guards may be purchased at the Marino
Center.) The intramural program will provide sticks and balls. Players may use their own sticks
provided they are free of rough edges/protrusions and are in good repair.
No goalkeepers - teams will designate one player (who will wear a different color to
distinguish themselves) who will be permitted to kick the ball within the crease.
3. Penalties and Violations

Players shall not:
1. Intentionally raise/lift the ball on a shot.
2. Lift the stick over the head of any other player.
3. Touch, handle, or interfere with other players, their sticks, or their clothing.
4. Obstruct an opponent who is attempting to play the ball. Players are guilty of
obstruction if they back into an opponent, interfere with their stick or body, or
shield the ball from a legitimate tackle with their stick or body.
5. Play the ball with the back of the stick.
6. Stop, catch, or play the ball with the hands.
7. Commit any unsportsmanlike acts.
Any such violations will result in a free hit to the opposing team at the point
of violation.
Violations within the crease will be punished by a penalty stroke.
4. Out-of-Bounds
FIELDHOCKEYRULES
1. A ball out-of-bounds along the sideline is put back into play at the spot closest
to where it went out.
2. A ball out-of-bounds along the backline, played unintentionally by the defense,
is put back into play on the backline within five yards of the nearest corner.
3. A ball out-of-bounds along the backline, played intentionally by the defense, is
put back into play on the backline ten yards from the nearer goalpost.
4. A ball out-of-bounds along the backline, played by the defense, is put back into
play within 16 yards of the spot.
