3. WHAT IS SELECTIVE MUTISM?
• Selective mutism (formerly known as elective mutism)
usually happens during childhood. A child with selective
mutism does not speak in certain situations, like at school,
but speaks at other times, like at home or with friends.
Selective mutism often starts before a child is 5 years old. It
is usually first noticed when the child starts school.
4. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
• Anxiety disorder
• Excessively shy
• Easily intimidated
• Fear of embarrassment
• Withdrawn or isolate themselves
• Failure to speak at school (speaks at
home)
• Non verbal students can be smart as a
whip yet scared to speak up in social
situations
• Mutism lasts for more that a month
• Inability to look you in the eye
5. DIAGNOSING
Students that possibly have selective mutism are diagnosed
by teacher reports, psychological testing, academic reports,
speech-language pathologists, pediatrician, and/or
psychiatrists.
TEAMWORK!!!
6. WHAT WE DID…..
We thought outside the box! All kids are into technology, why not
utilize that to overcome obstacles.
We came up with a great idea but lacked funding and support on our
campus.
We wrote a $5,000 grant and submitted it to the NEA Foundation
7. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
We ran up and down
the hallway at work
screaming like little
kids, almost
hyperventilating
(SERIOUSLY)!
