MY STORY
During my most
challenging year of my
career, I went to the beach
on the morning of my 39th
birthday and made a
commitment to make
myself a priority for the
next year. It was the best
decision of my life.
SOME OF THE RESULTS DURING
MY YEAR OF ME
• I am healthier than I have ever been
• We reduced our # of P2P events from 22 to 8
• I am happier than I have ever been
• Our P2P net revenue increased 180%
• I went on four international vacations
• We reduced staff turnover
• I sleep more than 8 hours a night on average
• We are projected to more than double our
P2P revenue in 2017
A YEAR LATER…
I celebrated my 40th
birthday by learning to
surf, a personal goal I had
been putting off because I
was afraid to fail. I fell a
lot that day. I also caught
a wave standing up.
My year of me is now a
way of life.
CREATING A BURNOUT FREE
WORKPLACE IN TWO PHASES
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION PART
ONE
What are three things
preventing YOU from taking
better care of YOURSELF?
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION PART
TWO
What can we do as non-profit
leaders to make ourselves a
priority?
MORE THAN 80 PEOPLE
CONTRIBUTED TO THE
CONVERSATION. THIS IS
WHAT THEY SHARED…
ROAD BLOCKS:
SOLUTION:
• Fear of Delegation
– I can’t let go
– I don’t trust that it will
get done or done right
– I can do it better
– They don’t have the
capacity to do it
– They have families
• Fear of Being Left
Out
• Fear of Letting
Others Down
• Trust
– Trust yourself
– Trust others
ROAD BLOCKS:
SOLUTION:
• I am not able to
accomplish my
personal goals…
– Not enough time
– Too much to do
– I get distracted
– Work becomes the
priority
– Life gets in the way
– My family needs me
• Share your personal
goals with others to
keep yourself
accountable.
ROAD BLOCKS:
SOLUTIONS:
• Guilt
• Never Enough Time
• Lack of Balance
• No Boundaries
• Never Enough Time
• Schedule Time for
yourself
• Have two phones;
one for work and
one for personal
• Identify what can be
done tomorrow and
move it to that to do
list
There were a lot of conversations about guilt. This
is a bigger conversation that we look forward to
continuing.
MY FAVORITE QUOTES
• “Let Yourself Stop Working”
– If you give a 110% to your mission during the day, it
is OK to stop working at the of it.
• “Why do our constituents get the best
version of ourselves”
– We need to treat ourselves and our families the same
way we treat our supporters.
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION PART
THREE
What can we do as non-profit
leaders to inspire our teams to
make themselves a priority too?
MORE THAN 80 PEOPLE
CONTRIBUTED TO THE
CONVERSATION. THIS IS
WHAT THEY SHARED…
INCREASE COMMUNICATION
ABOUT SELF CARE
• It is a two way conversation between
leadership and staff
• Be transparent about needs
• Host offline conversations
• Start meetings with growth topics and
sharing personal accomplishments
• Positively reinforce time off
HOLD STAFF ACCOUNTABLE FOR
PERSONAL SELF CARE
• Add personal self care to annual goals as
a form of professional development and
evaluate their progress on a quarterly,
semi-annual and/or annual basis.
• Lead by example
IDENTIFY YOUR STAFF NEEDS
AND STRENGTHS
• What do your staff need to be successful
and how do they prefer to be
communicated with and recognized?
– The group suggested the following resources to be
able to support your staff…
• Love Languages Business edition:
http://www.5lovelanguages.com/tools/business-
non-profit/
• Strengths Finder:
http://strengths.gallup.com/default.aspx
IT IS A TEAM EFFORT
• Make sure everyone knows what the
goals of the team and team members are
• Workout Wednesdays – inspire your team
to workout together or on their own on
Wednesdays and share the results.
