The Impact of Globalization on Qantas Airlines Marketing...
Globalisation is having a significant impact on marketing. This is because a business, by distributing
itself across international borders makes its product more readily available to international
customers and creates employment opportunities in the country it has moved to. To understand the
impacts, globalisation, marketing (particularly market segmentation), global marketing strategies
and general history of Qantas need to be examined.
Qantas is the oldest airline in the English speaking world. It was founded by the three aviation
pioneers Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster as the Queensland and Northern
Territory Aerial Service in 1920 and has grown from one aircraft which offered air taxi services and
joyrides to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Qantas' situational analysis (SWOT) is the first step in the marketing process whereby the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the airline are identified. The airline's strengths include:
Being part of the Oneworld alliance, having a high safety record, being a globally recognised airline
through the use of branding and the flying kangaroo logo, purchasing the latest aircraft thus
updating technology and staying level with international competitors and the final strong success of
Qantas has come by operating out of some of the world's major air travel hubs such as Los Angeles
International Airport, London's Heathrow Airport, Singapore's Changi Airport and Sydney
Kingsford Smith International providing an excellent range of customers.
Qantas' main weaknesses come from the high risk nature of airlines (possibility of crashes and large
scale incidents), the complexity of the aircraft they buy which could lead to costs of re–training
pilots to fly that particular aircraft and may lead to higher labour and the recent string of incidents
have undoubtedly hindered Qantas' image. One of the most recent incidents occurred while a
reasonably new Qantas A380 was flying from Singapore to Sydney when it experienced engine and
hydraulic problems forcing it to hastily turn back and make an emergency landing in Singapore.

Application of E-Business Strategy Creates Competitive...
Introduction
The airline industry is an area facing immense competition and with high fuel and maintenance
costs, the margins in this industry are proportionately very low. As a result of this it is an area
undergoing constant consolidation through a number of mergers and acquisitions. This means every
airline is fighting tooth and nail to stay afloat and not go bankrupt, yet at the same time they need to
find a method to create competencies for itself. On the basis of this it would create competitive
advantages for itself and become a market leader.
It is in this backdrop that the this paper tries to analyse whether evolving and adopting an e–
business strategy helps an airline gain sufficient market advantage to prove beneficial for ... Show

F11. Increase productivity
Airline can gain significant productivity improvements by using business–to–business e–commerce
to streamline and improve its supply chain processes. Airline can save time and money by
purchasing supplies via the Web. Similarly, Airline can use e–commerce to communicate and
transact with distributors and customers in a more cost–effective and timely manner than through
traditional channels.
F12. Improve level of customer service
Airline can improve it 's level of customer service by allowing customers to access "help"
information, complete application forms, pay invoices, or change their account details via it 's Web
site, at their own convenience.
F13. Strengthen customer relationships
Airline can strengthen relationships with existing customers by allowing them to access – via it 's
Web site – previously inaccessible decision–support information, such as detailed research reports,
product specifications and price comparisons.
F14. Enhance business intelligence
Airline can use its Web site to collect valuable intelligence about customer needs, buying habits and
preferences. This intelligence can be a valuable input to the development of new, profit–enhancing
processes, products and services. Similarly, Airline can use the Web to research new markets and to
gather valuable intelligence about its competitors.

A Report On Sustainable Biofuels
Executive Summary
With the goal of achieving carbon neutral growth by 2020 the aviation industry views sustainable
biofuels as its tool to reach that goal. The major aircraft manufacturers are leaders in the research
effort, utilizing their resources to fund and facilitate early tests with biofuels. While a core group of
airlines using a very limited supply of biofuel is testing the commercial viability of biofuels across
diverse networks.
Ethanol, made from corn, is part of the first generation biofuels, which are cheaper but have a larger
impact on food supply. The price of ethanol is higher than the current gas prices when factors like
transportation and labour are taken into account. However, airlines may find this type of biofuel ...

The usage of land originally dedicated to agriculture has not only created food shortages, but also
caused an increase in food prices. Furthermore, there is not enough land capacity to satisfy the
demand of the biofuel industry.
Biofuel is an ideal solution and the successes seen by aircraft manufacturers and airlines are small
steps of progress towards full implementation. However, given the limitations in land capacity, the
debate of fuel versus food, the current technological developments, high prices and lack of
government support, this solution is neither economical nor sustainable.

Future of Alternative Fuels for Air Travel Introduction
Rise of Biofuels
With the airline industry committed to achieving carbon–neutral growth by 2020, the introduction of
sustainably produced biofuels is a key strategy for achieving this goal. It was a multi–year process
that required collaboration between aircraft makers, engine manufacturers and oil companies, with
the first demonstration flight in 2008. In 2011 biofuels were approved for commercial flight use.
Since that time there has been thousands of flights fuelled with sustainable biofuels, here are a few
milestones;
February 2008
First demonstration flight powered with biofuel, a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 with one engine
powered with a 20% biofuel mix flew from London to Amsterdam.

Airlines introduced railway–style, uniformed stewards and restaurant–style tables adorned with
vases of flowers and silver cutlery. In 1928, Pan Am became the first US airline to employ cabin
attendants to serve meals. Also in 1928, Western Airlines (eventually absorbed in Delta Airlines)
served meals brought to their aeroplanes, by Cadillac, from a restaurant near Los Angeles Airport. In
1929, Pan Am introduced in–flight movies on its flights between Miami and Havana (Dana, 1999).
In 1930, United Air Lines introduced the world's first stewardess. Ellen Church was the first woman
to serve a meal on an aeroplane. Pan Am preferred to employ stewards who had served as
professional waiters or pursers on ships. In 1934, Pan Am inaugurated the S–42 on its route from
Miami to Buenos Aires. The airline set a precedent by installing facilities for heating food in–flight
on long over–water journeys. Stewards would take orders from passengers and radio ahead for
meals, which were served to passengers in a special dining area of the aeroplane (Dana, 1999).
Dinner in flight became a formal affair, often in tuxedos and evening gowns. Passengers enjoyed a
feast, cooked aboard the aeroplane, and served on linen–covered tables in a fine dining salon set
with china, crystal and fresh flowers. During the 1940s and 1950s, passengers on the Boeing 377
Stratocruiser could get staterooms with private washstands, berths, divans,

North American and European Airline Industry Essay
North American and European Airline Industry
INTRODUCTION
The Airline industry is one of the world's largest industries generating over $300 billion in revenues
in 2001 alone and additionally has the second highest industrial growth rate, after the computer
industry, with typical growth rates of 3–5% per annum over the last 20 years (Humphreys, 2003; BA
Fact book, 2002).
For the purpose of this assignment, freight/cargo airline activities will not be considered as freight
travel consists of only 2 % of total airline activity (see figure 3.1 and appendix 1) (BA Fact book,
2002,
ICAO, 2003). Furthermore, due to the nature of the airline industry and the Asian market being a lot
smaller and internally focused, we

This has had significant implications for an industry which relies on these passengers for
approximately two thirds of its revenue (Economist, 2001). The reduction in business passenger
numbers has resulted not only in adding to the already existing overcapacity problem but also in
increasing competitive pressures, the resultant effect being a persistent downtrend in airfares. In
fact, after adjusting for inflation airline revenues per passenger kilometre are about half the level of
30 years ago (BA Fact Book, 2002). The birth of the low cost carriers and the increasing market
share they have acquired has further exacerbated this downward trend as passengers become more
price sensitive.
1.2 Political Forces facing the airline industry
The airline industry is also very much in the political frontline (see figure 1.1). The implications of
terrorism for the industry are evident from the statistics – 2001 was only the second year in the
history of modern civil aviation in which international air traffic declined (IATA, 2002) and,
although air traffic has since improved, it is nevertheless still below pre–September 11 levels.
Furthermore, the knock on effects it has had in other areas of the industry, most notably the
vertiginous rise in the cost of insurance and security, has further added to the economic woes of the
industry. Since the attacks insurance companies immediately increased insurance premiums and
reduced

Market Entry Modes
Introduction: One of the most significant decisions to be taken in business is how to enter a new
overseas market because of commitments to be made; commitment in terms of dollars to be
invested, personnel for managing the international organization, and determination to stay in the
market long enough to realize a return on these investments, therefore selecting the most appropriate
market entry mode is vital. A mode of entry into an international market is the channel which the
organization employs to gain entry to a new international market. In this report I will go through

Introduction:
The world today has evolved in numerous ways thanks to the many inventions and discoveries, but
few have changed the way people live and experience the world as deeply as the invention of the
airplane. The industry has progressed to the point where now it would be impossible to think of life
without air travelling (for developed countries). Thanks to this, long distances have been somehow
‘shortened' hence altering people's concept of distance. As well, making it possible for individuals
to start and conduct businesses in places that were once never thought of.

BA's Mission Statement and goals:
How they plan to be the "undisputed leader in world travel":
British Airways has shown that redefining the vision, and making sure it is successfully carried out
throughout the organisation are keys to corporate success.
The new mission statement of BA has for target "to set new industry standards in customer service
and innovation, deliver the best financial performance and evolve from being an airline to a world
travel business with the flexibility to stretch its brand in new business areas." Already, competition
has seen airfares come down, but this has not eased competitive pressures within the air travel
industry. BA is trying to find something new to stay on top, whether the company will branch into
virtual travel is a debatable point, but innovation is certainly one of the main strategies at the airline,
for example electronic bookings, new schedules, more comfortable seats, new customer loyalty
programs and new services in lounges may

The Changeable Nature of the Air Transport Market Essay
The Changeable Nature of the Air Transport Market
Introduction:
Throughout it's history, the air transport industry has frequently demonstrated adjustment to the
current demands and economical circumstances of the market through increased fuel prices,
multiple recessions and an increase in ASK's and RSK's (ASK = 1 seat flown 1km and RSK = 1
revenue paying customer flown 1km). This informal report will seek to outline some examples of
how the industry has adapted both in the cargo and passenger markets. These two broad markets
will be expanded into some significant subsections and, using recent examples, I will seek to
demonstrate how they adapt. Appendix A is a table displaying the areas that will be covered.

The idea of a codeshare was to allow multiple companies to sell seats on a flight without them
having to actually fly the route . New codeshares are constantly being created as airlines see
opportunities to increase frequency of flights to certain destinations. Recent codeshares have been
developed between JetBlue and Turkish Airlines , Sri Lankan and Finnair and US Airways and
British Airways .
Charter:
Charter airlines seek to either provide a high–end business experience or a full holiday package to
customers. In recent years charter companies have lost consumers, particularly in the United
Kingdom, as can be seen in Appendix B. However, Thomas Cook and TUI, two of the largest
charter companies, have made some adjustments to try to create more interest. One method they
have employed to restructure their air capacity has been to reassign seats to a variety of sources,
through charter, scheduled and in–house flights as shown in Appendix C.
Cargo Transport:
The next section of this report will focus on how cargo carriers have adapted to move with the ever–
changing air transport industry.
Specialist Cargo:
At night, although passenger travel has been reduced to a minimum, companies such as Cargolux
take to the skies to move large quantities of cargo across the globe. The demand for this kind of
service and the number of FTK's (Freight Tons per Kilometer) has reduced steeply over the past few
years .

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Network Carriers
Network carriers are usually the carriers which have started their business a long time ago or an
airlines that have found a market gap for the Full service airline. Network carriers as a custom have
a variety of services they offer. Diversification of traveling classes for passengers: First–, Business–,
Economy comfort and Economy classes. Of course pricing of these classes varies as well by the
comfort and frills added to the product. The latest change has been withdrawing almost all the
services to the level of LCCs fares. FSCs also offer freight services, either just using the belly, in
other words, the aircrafts baggage department, or having additional freighter aircrafts, which carry
only cargo on board.
Network carriers have usually a hub airport, where and from where the flights usually start. Going
in circle the route they are assigned to. Most of the short–haul routes will start and end in the hub.
Having a hub linking to other airports, will make the number of available city pairs much greater
than when they are linked directly. Through an hourglass hub flights operate from one region to
points broadly in the opposite direction; and through a hinterland hub, short–haul flights feed

Late afternoon was fading to dusk as Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, gazed out at the large

Aviation in the Middle East
The 1980s aviation market in the Middle East was dominated by Gulf Air, a regional carrier backed
by the states of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the emirate of Abu Dhabi. While several European
carriers serviced the region, the overall market was small and Gulf Air maintained a high market
share. The majority of its flights emanated from its four hub cities to points in the Middle East,
South
Asia, and Europe, primarily on a point–to–point network.
As a non–core city for Gulf Air, Dubai experienced reductions in air service in 1985 that compelled
Dubai's leaders to launch its own airline. Local airline expertise was minimal, so the royal family
commissioned a small team of expatriate airline veterans, helmed by Sir Maurice Flanagan, to
charter the service they named Emirates. Divisional Senior Vice President (SVP) of Corporate
Communications, Marketing & Brand Boutros Boutros remarked, "Locals or expats, management
all had the same outlook and shared mentality, which ultimately helped build a successful and
cohesive executive team."6 Armed with only two planes and $10 million in seed capital provided by
the
Government of Dubai, the airline initially developed a regional focus to connect underserved
markets. Emirates

destinations in America, Australia, Asia, North America, Europe and Africa using a large fleet of
varying sizes of planes focusing on widebody passenger airplanes, specifically inside the medium
and small requirements set by Boeing. With 146 planes in their aircraft inventory, plus additional
planes through orders, Cathay has made many investments, in order to build up Hong Kong as a

The focus of this was to look at the growth of the market as well and to replace them with newer
generations of aircraft for a more pleasant flight experience for its customers. The replacing planes
would be the A320/1 Neo as well as the Boeing 737 Max. however, Jamie Carter, Manager of
Aircraft Procurement & Trading at Cathay said that they would also look towards other options,
"including aircraft coming off lease".
This is a strategy that in September 2017, Cathay Pacific themselves announced that they would be
delaying the delivery of longer haul aircrafts, and will instead, opt for smaller aircrafts. A HK$31.7
billion order was made for 32 short – haul aircrafts. As well as this, they are downsizing several of
their Airbus planes, going from 26 Airbus A350–1000 planes, to 22 Airbus A350–1000 planes,
ordering smaller A350–900 planes, increasing their inventory from 22 aircrafts to 28. In additional
of ordering smaller planes, Cathay will delay the ordering of five more A350–1000s to 2021, one

Alliances Comparison
Three major airline alliances now exist, bringing together between 15 and 27 airlines to reach over a
thousand destinations scattered all across the globe (Hill, 2014).
Oneworld
Oneworld was the second of the three major alliances to be born, launched two years after its rival
Star Alliance. The founding members were all long–established, well–respected airlines such as
British Airways, American Airlines and Qantas, who were soon joined by two more highly regarded
European carriers, FinnAir and Iberia. LanChile then came on board to provide coverage of Latin
America, followed by Royal Jordanian in 2005, the first Middle Eastern carrier to join any alliance
(Hill, 2014). Other significant airlines that have joined the alliance ever since includes Japan
Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, strengthening the alliance extensive coverage of Asia. Oneworld
aims to forge relationships with "frequent international travelers," particularly from the corporate
and business world, a goal reflected in its HQ location on Park Avenue, NY. It serves just under
1000 destination airports in over 150 countries – substantially fewer than either of its rivals, but
carefully targeted to appeal to its business clientele (oneworld, 2015). Oneworld was the first global
alliance to introduce interline ticketing between member airlines, which means you enjoy smooth
transfers and greater flexibility across the entire network, and offers the widest range of alliance

International Mergers: Etihad Airlines
Executive Summary International mergers have been frustrated for years in the airline business
where there are in excess of 200 national carriers conveying passengers across the world. Bans on
foreign ownership and lingering government control over routes, flights and slots at major airports
prevent international mergers and limit the ability of airlines to enter new markets. The incentive for
mergers is to grow revenue and reduce costs to become even more competitive by reducing fares.
This frustration has to a certain extent been overcome by super–alliances between national carriers
operating out of international 'hubs' like Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Copenhagen, Hong
Kong, London, Paris, Rome and Tokyo. Major airlines have grouped together with names like One
World, Star, Delta and KLM/NW to sell tickets to a wider range of destinations without flying to
more. They also draw on the 'spokes' of each member airline's associated companies operating out
of other airports in the member's country to the hub. Partners in an alliance sell each other's flights,
and even book blocks of seats on each other's aircraft. Etihad Airlines Many airline alliances share
codes so that customers do not readily know which member company undertakes the transportation.
One such alliance is Opodo, which was created by Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian
Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, KLM and Lufthansa. Booking is by the alliance's web site

American Airlines : The United States
American Airlines Abdullah Alshawaf 21st of October, 2015 Middle Tennessee State University
Introduction Since the enormous breakthrough of aviation, early in the 20th century, commercial
airlines have been playing the most part of our sky. One of the oldest, successful, and known airlines
is the American Airlines. Today, this airline carries more fleet than any other airline in the entire
world, which makes it solidly one of the biggest names in the aviation industry. History One day, in
April of 1926, a young pilot called Charles Lindbergh flew mail in a DH–4 biplane from Chicago to
St. Louis. At that same day, Charles and two other pilots flew mail back to Chicago. By then,
Charles was the pilot for a U.S. mail company called Robertson Aircraft Corporation based on
Missouri. This company was the very first root to American Airlines. Robertson Aircraft
Corporation kept hiring young pilots until eventually, in 1934, this company became the known
American Airlines. Also, at that same period of time, American Airlines were the first commercial
company to put the Douglas DC–3 on commercial service. In 1936, American Airlines were the
number one airline for domestic flight. By February of 1937, American Airlines had their one
millionth customer (American Airlines History). Moreover, World War II had made an impact into
the American Airlines. This impact had caused the American Airlines president to change.

The structural perspective aims to defeat lack of activity periods, doubts and dissatisfaction of
employees about their role in works and companies in order to make organizations achieve short and
long–run goals and results, increases their efficiency and maximize performance through
specialization and division of labor and suitable forms of coordination, control and working best
ways. Overall, the structure frame is the key element for profitable and sustainable organizations.
Organizations works best when rationality prevails and they are ready to anticipate and deal with
environment issues and other uncertainty problems. As mentioned, the main goal is create
coordinate, balance and efficiency organizations which can thrive for many profitable years.
Therefore, structure will work as a "blueprint" (Bolman and Deal, 2008) inside organizations. First
of all, it is not possible to take one structure as ideal, whereas the structures are different from
organization to organization, because each one has their own identity and strategy. Today, all of
them face pressures of globalization, competition and other environment pressures outside and
inside the organizations, therefore, organizations cross times where they have to "rethink" and
reconsider new approach, perhaps through restructuring. These restructuring pressures, conducted
by elements of the company environment should be considered as a main source of reaction to fight

In contrast, the British Airways considered Virgin Atlantic Airways as its major competitor. Due to

We will also be building our own pilot training centre, to recruit and train pilot trainees. By taking
younger pilots we can afford to pay them lower than our current experienced pilots. We will also be
setting up our own Aircraft maintenance division, as our aircraft numbers increase; it will be more
profitable to have an in–house maintenance division, rather than outsourcing it.
Taking Advantage of Opportunities
The Asean "Open Skies" agreement to be implemented by 2015 will allow us to increase the
frequency and locations we fly to within Asean, we are well poised for these increases with the
purchase of 48 new aircraft.
Looking out for Threats
The greatest cost for us is aviation fuel, in order to control this cost we will be trialing biofuel and
allow our customers to purchase carbon credits similar to Continental Airlines. Needless to say we
will be keeping a close eye on our competitors and match their pricing and destinations. We will
also be working closely with our upcoming sister airline Scoot to ensure that our promotions do not
clash, but rather complement each other with Transfer tie–ups and other promotions.

  • 2. The Impact of Globalization on Qantas Airlines Marketing... Globalisation is having a significant impact on marketing. This is because a business, by distributing itself across international borders makes its product more readily available to international customers and creates employment opportunities in the country it has moved to. To understand the impacts, globalisation, marketing (particularly market segmentation), global marketing strategies and general history of Qantas need to be examined. Qantas is the oldest airline in the English speaking world. It was founded by the three aviation pioneers Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster as the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service in 1920 and has grown from one aircraft which offered air taxi services and joyrides to a ... Qantas' situational analysis (SWOT) is the first step in the marketing process whereby the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the airline are identified. The airline's strengths include: Being part of the Oneworld alliance, having a high safety record, being a globally recognised airline through the use of branding and the flying kangaroo logo, purchasing the latest aircraft thus updating technology and staying level with international competitors and the final strong success of Qantas has come by operating out of some of the world's major air travel hubs such as Los Angeles International Airport, London's Heathrow Airport, Singapore's Changi Airport and Sydney Kingsford Smith International providing an excellent range of customers. Qantas' main weaknesses come from the high risk nature of airlines (possibility of crashes and large scale incidents), the complexity of the aircraft they buy which could lead to costs of re–training pilots to fly that particular aircraft and may lead to higher labour and the recent string of incidents have undoubtedly hindered Qantas' image. One of the most recent incidents occurred while a reasonably new Qantas A380 was flying from Singapore to Sydney when it experienced engine and hydraulic problems forcing it to hastily turn back and make an emergency landing in Singapore. The major aircraft manufacturers are leaders in the research effort, utilizing their resources to fund and facilitate early tests with biofuels. While a core group of airlines using a very limited supply of biofuel is testing the commercial viability of biofuels across diverse networks. Ethanol, made from corn, is part of the first generation biofuels, which are cheaper but have a larger impact on food supply. In 1928, Pan Am became the first US airline to employ cabin attendants to serve meals. Also in 1928, Western Airlines (eventually absorbed in Delta Airlines) served meals brought to their aeroplanes, by Cadillac, from a restaurant near Los Angeles Airport. In fact, after adjusting for inflation airline revenues per passenger kilometre are about half the level of 30 years ago (BA Fact Book, 2002). The birth of the low cost carriers and the increasing market share they have acquired has further exacerbated this downward trend as passengers become more price sensitive. 1.2 Political Forces facing the airline industry The airline industry is also very much in the political frontline (see figure 1.1). The implications of terrorism for the industry are evident from the statistics – 2001 was only the second year in the history of modern civil aviation in which international air traffic declined (IATA, 2002) and, although air traffic has since improved, it is nevertheless still below pre–September 11 levels. Furthermore, the knock on effects it has had in other areas of the industry, most notably the vertiginous rise in the cost of insurance and security, has further added to the economic woes of the industry. Since the attacks insurance companies immediately increased insurance premiums and reduced

This informal report will seek to outline some examples of how the industry has adapted both in the cargo and passenger markets. New codeshares are constantly being created as airlines see opportunities to increase frequency of flights to certain destinations. Charter: Charter airlines seek to either provide a high–end business experience or a full holiday package to customers. In recent years charter companies have lost consumers, particularly in the United Kingdom, as can be seen in Appendix B. However, Thomas Cook and TUI, two of the largest charter companies, have made some adjustments to try to create more interest. One method they have employed to restructure their air capacity has been to reassign seats to a variety of sources, through charter, scheduled and in–house flights as shown in Appendix C. Cargo Transport: The next section of this report will focus on how cargo carriers have adapted to move with the ever– changing air transport industry. Specialist Cargo: At night, although passenger travel has been reduced to a minimum, companies such as Cargolux take to the skies to move large quantities of cargo across the globe. The demand for this kind of service and the number of FTK's (Freight Tons per Kilometer) has reduced steeply over the past few years .

Aviation in the Middle East The 1980s aviation market in the Middle East was dominated by Gulf Air, a regional carrier backed by the states of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the emirate of Abu Dhabi. While several European carriers serviced the region, the overall market was small and Gulf Air maintained a high market share. The majority of its flights emanated from its four hub cities to points in the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, primarily on a point–to–point network. As a non–core city for Gulf Air, Dubai experienced reductions in air service in 1985 that compelled Dubai's leaders to launch its own airline. Local airline expertise was minimal, so the royal family commissioned a small team of expatriate airline veterans, helmed by Sir Maurice Flanagan, to charter the service they named Emirates. Divisional Senior Vice President (SVP) of Corporate Communications, Marketing & Brand Boutros Boutros remarked, "Locals or expats, management all had the same outlook and shared mentality, which ultimately helped build a successful and cohesive executive team."6 Armed with only two planes and $10 million in seed capital provided by the Government of Dubai, the airline initially developed a regional focus to connect underserved markets. • 36. International Mergers: Etihad Airlines Executive Summary International mergers have been frustrated for years in the airline business where there are in excess of 200 national carriers conveying passengers across the world. Bans on foreign ownership and lingering government control over routes, flights and slots at major airports prevent international mergers and limit the ability of airlines to enter new markets. The incentive for mergers is to grow revenue and reduce costs to become even more competitive by reducing fares. This frustration has to a certain extent been overcome by super–alliances between national carriers operating out of international 'hubs' like Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Rome and Tokyo. Major airlines have grouped together with names like One World, Star, Delta and KLM/NW to sell tickets to a wider range of destinations without flying to more. They also draw on the 'spokes' of each member airline's associated companies operating out of other airports in the member's country to the hub. Partners in an alliance sell each other's flights, and even book blocks of seats on each other's aircraft. Etihad Airlines Many airline alliances share codes so that customers do not readily know which member company undertakes the transportation. One such alliance is Opodo, which was created by Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, KLM and Lufthansa. Booking is by the alliance's web site www.opodo.com. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
