There is a button on every Instagram page marked, âFollow.â If you like
the page and wish to see when it is updated, you press the âFollowâ
button and voila, you are following that person or that company. It takes
no time and really no commitmentâŚit is just a moment in cyberspace
that links you to someone else in the virtual world.
I think that when Jesus says, âFollow meâ to his disciples, he meant
something very different. His invitation to follow literally meant to
physically follow him, to receive instruction, to observe and be trained in
real-world situations, and to pass this instruction and training down to
their children and even on to other followers. âFollowingâ Jesus required
tremendous commitment, involvement, and resolve.
When we think of the church in our time, we should understand
ourselves as a community of people who follow ChristâŚbut what does
that mean? We canât physically follow him around the Galilee, right?
Fortunately, we have been left a witness to Christâs teachings in the Bible.
These witnesses become an essential part of how we âfollowâ Jesus: they
instruct us and direct us in his way. I mean this: you canât follow Jesus or
walk in âthe way of Christâ unless you are interacting with the Gospels
in some shape or form.
This month, I invite you to join me in a study of Jesusâ teachings. We
will be examining several of Jesusâ parables. These short stories were
often constructed from common folk teachings and then given a twist to
make Jesusâ point. We will use Rabbi Amy-Jill Levineâs âshort stories by
jesusâ as our syllabus. This initial study will start at 7:00PM on
Thursday nights, beginning October 4th.
I hope that over the course of this year, we will grow in our
understanding of what made Jesus and his followers so compelling in
their context, and be challenged to live our lives in ways that not only
transform us; but begins a revolution of hope, peace, and love in our
neighborhood.

2. SERMON SERIES: SIGNS
October 14, 21, 28 & November 4
As we move into the culmination of the liturgical year, we sit with some of Jesusâ final teachings to his
disciples and through some of his interactions with the scribes and Pharisees...each of these passages reveal
distinguishing signs of those who truly understand the Good News Jesus brought.
October 7 World Communion Sunday: Together on the Holy Mountain Isaiah 56:1-8
October 14 Finishing First Mark 10:17-31
October 21 Laity Sunday: Becoming Great Mark 10:35-45
October 28 Being Bold Mark 10:46-52
November 4 The Gospel Basics Mark 12:28-34
HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
September 2 - This morning, Phillip Mottaz & Norman Kelsey shared this monthâs announcements.
Pastor Steve began his latest sermon series titled, âAre You In?â Today was part one of five and it was
about âTraditions,â based on Mark 7:1-23. Jesus isnât interested in empty actions or words; he insists that
what defiles a person comes from within a personâs heart.
September 9 - Today was FALL KICKOFF SUNDAY! Everyone in attendance received a cool back
pack. The Chancel Choir returned to worship, and the moment with children also made a come back.
Pastor Steve had fun with the kids while playing the Whisper Challenge and relating it to todayâs scripture
Mark 7:24-37. Pastor Steveâs sermon was titled, âAre You In? Ethnicity,â which was the second part in our
five part sermon series for September. Following worship, everyone enjoyed a tailgate party on the front
lawn of our church! Good food and fellowship! It was fun to see everyone sporting their favorite team
jersey too!
September 16 - Patty Kelsey shared a Moment with Children about getting to know Jesus up close and
personal. Scripture focus for today was Mark 8:27-38 and Pastor Steveâs sermon was titled, âAmbition,â
Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah, and then Jesus begins to talk about his death and what must happen.
Peter tries to stop Jesus from saying these things, but Jesus rebukes him and then tells everyone who is
following him and the disciples to take up their cross. Jeff Thomas shared special music.
September 23 - The children enjoyed a moment with Pastor Steve as he shared the story of the disciples
fighting over who was first. Pastor Steveâs sermon was based on Mark 9:30-37, and titled, Position. Jesus
again predicts his death on the way to Jerusalem, which only leads to the disciples arguing about who is the
greatest among them. Jesus tells them they need to be servants of all and willing to be last of all. Libeck
Kadu and Shaun Vieten shared special music, âI Surrender All.â
September 30 - Patty Kelsey will share a moment with children based on Mark 9 verse 40, âWhoever is
not against us is for us,â using team logo items. Pastor Steve will preach on Mark 9:38-50, which is that last
part in his âAre You In?â series. This Sundayâs sermon is titled, âSocial Group.â The disciples see someone
who isnât in their group doing ministry in Jesusâ name and want to know if they should stop them. Jesus
says no and then says that they shouldnât place any stumbling blocks in front of them. He concludes with,
âhave salt in yourselves and be at peace with one another.â Eddy Faulkner is sharing special music. Phillip
Mottaz and Norman Kelsey will share October Announcements.

World Communion Sunday is a celebration
observed by several Christian denominations,
taking place on the first Sunday of every
October, that promotes Christian unity and
ecumenical cooperation. It focuses on an
observance of the eucharist. The tradition was
begun in 1933 by Hugh Thomson Kerr who
ministered in the Shadyside Presbyterian
Church.
World Communion Sunday is one of six
church wide Special Sundays with offerings of
The United Methodist Church. World
Communion Sunday calls the church to reach
out to all people and model diversity among
Godâs children. The special offering provides
World Communion Scholarships, the Ethnic
Scholarship Program and the Ethnic In-
Service Training Program.
We will be asking for an extra offering that will
go toward these scholarships on October 7th,
which you can place in the envelope and
designate it âWorld Communion.â
During worship, Pastor Steve will lead us in
remembering that Godâs church isnât just
within our walls, but around the world. We
will celebrate with multilingual readings,
music, and following worship, a time of
multicultural foods during fellowship. We hope
you mark your calendars to attend. Please
bring a dish that celebrates your heritage.

8. By Norman Kelsey,
Church Council Chair
Church Council convened on September 18 in
the Social Hall. The agenda included a forum
for the intake of ideas and gathering thoughts
on the Hopes and Dreams of the church. There
was plenty of great dialogue and suggestions.
We also dwelled thoughtfully on what we feel
God is calling our church to do.
Pastor Steve delivered a âState of the Churchâ
address. He discussed how our congregation can
reach our community by learning about them
and meeting them where they are.
There were brief updates from the Heads of
Trustees and Finance. I shared a recap of some
highlights of Momentum, last monthâs School of
Congregational Development event in San
Diego. One takeaway in particular was âpop-up
church.â Pop-up church is a portable way of
bringing our faith and witness to the community
to nearby events like farmersâ markets and art &
crafts fairs, wherever our community is
gathering as we endeavor to be the church of
choice for North Hollywood.
We wrapped up the session by reviewing key
dates for Laity to engage in ministry as we are
called to do.
The next gathering will be the Church Council
Potluck on Tuesday, November 13th. Once
again, all congregants are welcome to attend
and committee chairs should plan on being
there.

9. NEWS RELEASE
 GLOBAL YOUNG PEOPLE ADOPT
UNITY STATEMENT DECLARING LOVE FOR CHURCH
United Methodist youth and young adults attending the Global Young Peopleâs Convocation (GYPC)
adopted a Statement of Unity declaring their love of the church, âthe unity it offers and how it welcomes
all people, regardless of who they are and what they do in life.â
The unity statement was drafted by GYPC delegates during a gathering of UM youth, young adults and
adult workers from all over the world in Johannesburg, South Africa, in July. GYPC is a collaborative effort
among the churchâs general agencies led by Young Peopleâs Ministries (YPM), a unit of Discipleship
Ministries.
âWe recognize and celebrate the diversity that comes from being in a global United Methodist
connection,â the statement says. âWe view each person as an essential part of the body of Christ, which is
the Church, and that God loves each of us far beyond what we can imagine. With that, we believe that
God's love is engrained in us and part of our identity as United Methodists.
âWe stand against the spirit of hatred, judgment and discrimination which creates division instead of
unity. We pray that through the Holy Spirit we can remain united as a body that continues to make
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.â
Â
The unity statement was drafted during GYPCâs Legislative Forum, which uses a small group process that
emphasizes dialogue instead of debate. The 134 voting delegates and 121 nonvoting delegates attending
the convocation represented 40 different countries.
"This statement is important because it is the result of young people from around the world listening to
each other and describing the kind of church they want to be," said Michael Ratliff, Associate General
Secretary at Discipleship Ministries and head of the YPM unit. "Since they are both the church today, and
becoming the church of the future, those of us who are more seasoned should acknowledge their words.
Their call to unity goes beyond politics to the heart of the purpose of Christâs church.â
Â
During the forum, delegates also voted to express their Stance on the Commission of the Way Forward.
Â
Prior to the vote, the Rev. Julie Hager Love, a commission member and the Kentucky Conference's
director of connectional ministries, provided delegates with a brief summary of the commissionâs three
plans, which offer ways to move the denomination past its decades-long struggle with issues around
LGBTQ. The plans will be presented to the 2019 Special Session of General Conference.
Â
The voting results were:
38.46% support the Traditionalist Plan | 60.58% support the One Church Plan | 19.23% support the
Connectional Conference Plan | 0.96% abstained.
