2. ROMANIA IN EUROPE
ROMANIA is a country located at the intersection of Central and Southeastern
Europe, bordering on the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and
Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast and east, and Bulgaria to
the south. At 238,400 square kilometres (92,000 sq mi), Romania is the eighth
largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest
population of the European Union with more than 19 million people.
4. ROMANIAN CAPITAL
Its capital and biggest city is Bucharest, the tenth
largest city in the EU.
Bucharest was first mentioned documents in
1459. It became the capital of Romania in
1862 and is the centre of Romanian
media, culture and art. Its architecture is a mix
of historical (neo-classical), interbellum
(Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and
modern. In the period between the two World
Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the
sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the
nickname of "Little Paris" (Micul Paris).
