It is situated on the right bank of the Ialomiţa River. <br />is a name derived from Slavonic, its original meaning being of marketplace.<br />*<br />*<br />was first attested in 1396 in the Travel Accounts of Johannes Schiltbergerand became the capital of the Wallachianvoivodship during the reign of Mircea the Old (MirceacelBătrân) when the Royal Court (&quot;CurteaDomnească&quot;) was built. Vlad III Dracula later added Chindia Tower (TurnulChindia), now a symbol of the city. <br />was the capital city between 13th and 17th centuries.<br />*<br />After ConstantinBrâncoveanu (a Wallachianvoievod/prince) moved the capital to Bucharest, Târgovişte lost its importance, decaying economically as its population decreased.<br />
