Toyota and Gm Supplier Relationship Manangement &...
Business Case Analysis: #1 Toyota, Ford, GM and Volkswagen
–Some Differing Opinions about working with Suppliers. CASE SUMMARY: Toyota
Motor Corporation is one of the world's leading auto manufacturers. Toyota has been approached by two large US automakers, GM and Ford, to join
their Internet–based marketplaces where the automakers and their suppliers hope to do business more efficiently and drastically reduce costs by
giving the suppliers access to more business and by trading billions of dollars worth of goods and services in the marketplace. Both Ford and GM
have embraced the concept of an electronic marketplace for motor vehicle parts and are in fierce competition to enroll large non–US automakers to
their camps. Toyota's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in situations where competition for contracts is fierce, price wars may break out resulting in decrease in quality of the products in order to
meet the lowest supplier price. The entire culture of the Toyota Company revolves around the "Toyota Way". In operating the "Toyota Way" one of
the key elements is respect for people: Employees, Customers & Suppliers. There are 14 principles that constitute the Toyota Way. The principles are
organized in four broad categories: 1) Long–Term Philosophy, is a number one. By joining the Internet marketplace, Toyota would go against its own
number one principle and against its "Toyota Way". In addition, Toyota, being the champion of kaizen, quality and lean philosophy is very well aware
of the very likely sacrifice of the quality of products it depends on to produce high quality cars, once it joined the Internet marketplace. By nurturing
relationships with suppliers and treating them as partners, Toyota has been very successful in harvesting the benefits of a good relationship with its
suppliers, receiving high quality products, on time and according to specifications. Without such close and long term relationships, Toyota would not
have been so successful in implementing and maintaining excellent JIT supply chain as well as lean philosophy just to name the few. As there are
unquestionable benefits to be gained from the Internet marketplace, there

from their ability to adapt to an ever changing market place, in both good times and in bad, while honoring its commitment to product safety and

Defining Toyota Production System Terms
Some of the various assessment tools used to better assess and evaluate the Toyota Production System (TPS) are: Andon is a visual or audible system
used to notify both management and production workers when a problem or issue occurs in the production process. The goal of andon is to quickly
identify a problem, and its location, so that the issue may be rectified quickly thus reducing downtime in the production process. As of 2014 Toyota
began to retire what has become known as the andon cord, or emergency cable, in the auto industry and a symbol of quality for a new push button
design. Yellow buttons placed at waist level and easy to access along the production process have become the standard. Toyota first switched to push
buttons during renovation of the Tsutsumi plant in Japan, but has not yet switched in North America. Warning lights in hospitals rooms for patient
monitoring is a form of andon. Hoshin is the process of establishing direction, through proper management, and setting goals and objectives for
everyone to achieve. The hoshin process has three parts: select a key objective, align implementation at all levels, and implement–review–improve. An
example of hoshin can be seen in the Army whereby individuals and units are given METL (Mission Essential Task List) task to accomplish at each
level in support of the overall objective of the higher objective. These tasks are derived by the commander at the

NUMMI was created as a team–based organization with sense of interdependence and unity. There were just three–level management levels; in
contrast, old GM's plant had a six levels hierarchy. A team leader, who was responsible not only for coordinating teamwork and trainings of team
members, but also was able to replace a team member on line if needed, represented the first level of management. The second–level management in
addition was responsible for budgeting and planning. Moreover, these managers were expected to resolve the problems at the lowest possible level.
In order to foster fair and efficient environment NUMMI designed a new job structure; specifically, job classifications were reduced from 81 to 3
with the same wage rate. Developed reward system also tended to equalize rewards among employees. For instance, a team leader received only a
50–cent hourly premium and each team was awarded with a small social budget.
Continual training system and information sharing among all team members let the company to support its goals. Implementing the stop–the–line
system allowed management to empower its employees by pushing down responsibility for the production and quality at the lowest possible level, to a
worker. Meanwhile, the policy of "mutual trust" or no–layoff policy established a real trust between the company and employees by ensuring its

This recession hits home with the automobile industry. During this current recession GM is facing the possibility of bankruptcy, but is hoping to

is technology. The automobile industry is constantly focusing on technology in order to make themselves and their cars better. They constantly
compete to be the "first" one to have the newest and best idea. One of these ideas is an electric vehicle. GM, Ford, and Toyota all have electric
automobiles. GM has the Chevy Volt. Volt One of Ford's electric cars is the Electric Ranger. Ranger Toyota had the Rav4 EV, but due to
discouraging sales it stopped production. "Toyota remains committed to developing an "Eco Vehicle," one that will have a minimal impact on the

trips you would have to use a combination of electric and gasoline power. Electric Car Another area of technology that the automobile industry is
working on is fuel cells. Even though it is predicted that automobiles using fuel cells will not be released until 2010, Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV), may

supervision was present. Nobody was monitoring the services being billed or the amount charged. Many of the providers billed the insurance company

The hope is that an internationally recognized system of environmental protection will eventually be set up and adhered to, so that green practice will
not inhibit international trading. Keeping hold of their certificate means that Subaru now returns some parts and packaging back to suppliers to be
re–used, melts and processes soaked rags into plastic beads for electric wire harness covers, and burns other waste for energy. The plant now saves
money by cutting waste, and always ensures that lean initiatives do not in any way hamper production. The customer response In theory lean
production should win favor in the eyes of an ever more environmentally aware customer base. Indeed, we do tend to voice approval if we are
made aware of the benefits. From a practical point of view lean production often means we get hold of our car sooner and it has few problems. From
an ethical one, it appeals to us to know that the companies we support are acting in an environmentally responsible way. Or does it? Oliver and
Holweg believe that lean production can actually damage sales in some sectors of the market, especially the prestige end. Whereas the reliability and
the fulfilment of basic functional needs might win over those on low to mid level budgets, those with more cash to spend tend to be impressed by

Toyota has always been one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world since its inception in 1937. It was Sakichi Toyoda's personality traits
that Toyota remains as the most admired company in the world. Sakichi Toyoda possessed a risk taking personality, because of which the current
Toyota, which we see today has made its birth. Toyota's legendary business model, management principles and business philosophy changed the way in
which business in done by automobile industry. Concepts like "Just in Time" production, Genchi genbutsu (go and see to understand) made Toyota
different from its competitors.
Things went out well for Toyota and the years 2003 to 2007 could be inferred as the most profitable years in the company's history. But it faced a major
problem in the events of recession in 2008 and the recall crisis of 2009–2010. "Toyota Under Fire" describes the recall crisis in details and provides
valuable lessons and leadership techniques to survive at the time of crisis and how to turn a crisis into opportunity by three principles – i) Build strong
culture long before the crisis hits, ii) culture matters far more than decisions made by top executives, iii) Investing in ... Show more content on

This is one of the major problems in any organization. Nobody is accountable if a group task is not done as everyone in the group is responsible.
Toyota also faced the same behaviour in its employees. To avoid this tendency the company launched its own problem–solving process based on Toyota
Business Practices (TBP). It helped to examine what the problems were what role the team or organization had played in causing or failing to address
the problem. It also suggested what the team or organization can do to contribute to a solution to the problem that will take the company

media, although the causes of individual reports were difficult to verify. Government officials, automotive experts, Toyota, and members of the general
public contested the scope of the sudden acceleration issue and the veracity of victim and problem reports. Various parties attributed sudden
unintended acceleration reports to mechanical, electric, and driver error causes. Some US owners that had their recalled vehicles repaired still reported
accelerator pedal issues, leading to investigations and the finding of improper repairs. The recalls further led to additional NHTSA and Toyota
investigations, along with multiple lawsuits. On February 8, 2011, the NHTSA, in collaboration with NASA, released its findings into the investigation
on the Toyota drive–by–wire throttle system. After a 10–month search, NASA and NHTSA scientists found no electronic defect in Toyota vehicles.
Driver error or pedal misapplication was found responsible for most of the incidents. The report ended stating, "Our conclusion is Toyota's problems
were mechanical, not electrical." This included sticking accelerator pedals, and pedals caught under floor mats. C. Financial Statement Analysis I.

Key Factors Influencing Economic Growth
Chapter 7, "Principle 1: Base Your Management Decisions on Long–Term Philosophy, Even at the Expense of Short–term Financial Goals" illustrates
factors that ought to be considered in business in order to influence success. However, despite the influence of self interest, demand, and supply on
financial system, there is the dark side in pursuit of self interest as the main factor influencing economic growth. This is seen in major scandals of major
organizations. This has influences shortage of jobs and high rates of unemployment. As illustrated in this chapter, it is evident that short term profits

This has influenced more than a few organizations to emulate Toyota. When Toyota managers as well as its executives were interviewed, they are
asked why the company was there as a business. Based on their opinion, it is evident that the company's success is a result of motivation and
consistence in their labor. In addition, they argued that the purpose of the company is not to make money. The company only makes money in order to
focus on the future. The company invests in order to ensure that it continues to grow and develop in investments. According to managers and
executives response, it is evident that Toyota makes money to help the community in many ways. As illustrated in the chapter, it is evident that Toyota
nearly went bankrupt during the World War II. This led to resignation of the founder of the company Kiichiro Toyoda. However, the company came up
with a strategy of eliminating wasted motions and coming up with considerable measures that will effectively enhance fast developments. The
management of the company came up with a Budget Control System were the monthly data is used to keep an eye on the budgets of all divisions
down to the least expenditure. According to chapter 7, when the managers were questioned based on cost reduction and whether it was a priority, they
stated that it was not an underlying factor that the company uses to drive sales. In that case, the company would not fire its employees as a result of
downturn in sales. The organization

Toyota's Positive Outlook Of Toyota
Toyota's Positive Outlook
Toyota! Toyota is the top automobile manufacturer globally and is on its way in the U.S. Although, Toyota has not always been at the top of the
game, the company has always rose to the occasion. What do you think a crisis for an automobile manufacturer would consist of? If a recall is what
you said you would be correct. That is just what Toyota overcame in 2010. With this recall Toyota showed the world what the company could handle,
whether it was through social media or with CEO changes, Toyota surpassed it and is still rising. History of Toyota Toyota was founded in 1937, as an
off shoot of Toyoda Spinning and Weaving Company.Sakichi Toyoda invented the first power loom which revolutionized the country's textile industry.
With his son's help he created the first automatic loom in 1924. Kiichiro was the innovator of the family and as such he would go to travel to the
U.S.A. and Europe, which introduced him to the automobiles industry. With this new knowledge Sakichi sold his loom business and put the money
into the first Toyota truck which was built in 1935, and the first passenger car in 1936. Thus begun the beginning of the Toyota Motor Corporation.
The First Crisis
Toyota having 3,000 employees and no facilities at the end of World War II, did not give up. Toyota created a new postwar automobile in 1947, and
attempted to rebuild. The Japanese economy still suffering in 1949, with raw materials and goods of all kinds still in short supply.

Toyota's Key Challenges
"Toyota's information and decision making has been highly centralized. The result: Top management in Japan has been less sensitive to the
expectations of regulators, culture and politics in overseas markets, and consequently, they have been slower to respond to local problems. The reality
is that Toyota's problems were not caused by a faulty production system but by poor management decisions" (Cole, 2011, pg. 34). In the past, Toyota
was a company that trained employees to embrace the Toyota Way and pushed their employees to strive for continuous improvement and perfection.
The upper management at Toyota has strayed away from their core; founding principles that empowered their employees and contributed to making
them a successful automobile manufacturing juggernaut. A major source for of their ongoing improvement and innovation has been from employees.
An analysis has been done for Toyota's management team, Appendix A, E and F, to show the root causes and how these root causes affect the internal
communication process of ideas, concerns and knowledge between Toyota's upper management and its foreign–based employees. To summarize the
problem into a statement: "The Toyota Way and TPS places heavy emphasis teamwork, employee empowerment and striving for continual improvement
and perfection. To ensure these principles are always understood and embraced, Toyota's management needs to be committed to making sure

Lean Manufacturing Is A Method Of Reducing Waste
1) INTRODUCTION: Lean manufacturing is a method of reducing waste (muda) in the manufacturing system. It also considers the waste due to
overload and waste dude to over burden. Lean manufacturing also best known as Toyota production system or kaizen production system. Although
the Toyota production system was introduced more than a century ago it has continue to develop over time. It was practiced by the Henry Ford for
the manufacturing of Ford model T which was very successful between the years 1908 to 1920 which almost sold 2 Million cars a year. Later on it
was developed by the Toyota in Japan. The main idea behind thelean manufacturing is to value the customer needs by reducing the waste and
achieving good products with more value by consuming less resources. Muda is defined as the material or the activity for which the customer is not
willing to pay. The main task of lean manufacturing is to identify Muda and to get rid of it. These products are created by using less human effort, less
space, less capital, less time to produce high quality.
There are eight kinds of Muda mentioned in Lean manufacturing:
1.Waste due to unwanted motion
2.Waste due to waiting
3.Waste of conveyance
4.Waste due to correction
5.Waste due to over production
6.Waste due to over processing
7.Waste of Inventory
8.Waste due to knowledge disconnection
There are five steps that represent a continue cycle that leads to successful implementation of lean manufacturing.

Toyota has determined it 's cars need to be: * Of high quality and reliability thus requiring infrequent maintenance. * Widely affordable, including
increased affordability of Hybrid and Plug–in Hybrid vehicles. * Silent in a world which is increasingly aware of noise pollution. * Easy to use, with
particular reference to simplified user interfacing on new Hybrid and Plug–in Hybrid vehicles * Clean. Even if in a traditional gasoline engine model
emissions need to be kept to an absolute minimum.
Whilst identifying the need for "cleaner" cars, Toyota has also launched the Plug–in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV) demo project in 18 European
countries. This project involves a limited production line of 200 PHEV vehicles which are being road tested by customers in 18 European countries
till 2013. So far the project has already increased awareness of PHEV cars and provided crucial data with regards to technical performance and
customer satisfaction. This data will be used in the near future to launch a large scale PHEV production line.
Toyota realises the importance of its customers time. The increasing use of the internet, especially in the early stages of a purchase, has made the

In particular, the report scrutinized the $7,500 tax credit that the government is now offering to consumers who purchase plug–in hybrids like
Chevrolet's Volt or all–electric vehicles like Nissan's Leaf. This credit, the CBO estimate, will cost $2 billion between 2009 and 2019. In the short
term, this credit is unlikely to make electric cars affordable, the report argues. Even with the tax break, an average plug–in hybrid would still cost
roughly $4,000 more over its lifespan than a conventional vehicle of similar size and performance, assuming that gasoline prices continue to average
around $3.60 per gallon (an assumption that might be wrong). In other words, the tax credit would have to be much bigger to make electric vehicles
competitive. That's one reason why CBO only seems to be expecting around 270,000 or so electric vehicles to get sold over the next seven years–far
below President Obama's goal of putting one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. Still, the report notes, those sales figures could very well
go up if either the cost of gasoline goes higher or the price of electricity goes down. (Alternatively, the cost of batteries might also plunge–a recent
report from McKinsey & Company predicted that lithium–ion battery prices could fall by as much as two–thirds this decade, giving a major boost
to the industry.) What's more, for the next several years at least, the electric–vehicle tax credit will have "little or no impact" on America's

and his family who had a fatal accident following the stuck of a Lexus gas pedal. The report came two months after the accident, duration when we
were investigating the issue to determine the cause root of the accident. B. Following this accident, we took stern measures and recalled over 6
million Toyota brand cars in USA and overseas. Unfortunately, Los Angeles times ignored our effort to manage the situation and went ahead to
report the case without first evaluating the public response. This move has humiliated our global safety concern and has caused crisis that has

the problem that resulted to the crisis) Refutation The crisis provided by the media is partially true. This is because according to Los Angeles
Times, the fatal accident that affected the driver of Lexus car and his family was as a result of negligence in the management and the acceleration
errors. A. The fact is that many models of automobiles times to times have various issues and Toyota was not an exceptional. B. The gas pedal
problem according to an investigation carried out by our experts was as a result of floor mat incursion.

Communication is the most important aspect of conducting business. Toyota must improve their means of communication and it must start at the
beginning of the customer/supplier relationship. The Process Flow chart will identify the communication process between Toyota and supplier is
further updated to show improved processes. Expectations should be established to ensure that suppliers are providing the quality products that
represent the Toyota brand. Currently, Toyota has sacrificed quality and safety to meet the demands of the customers. Toyota must take into
consideration the market they enter and the major players that exist to provide the support necessary. Toyota uses the Annual Purchasing Policy process
to communicate their expectations to suppliers. "The purpose of supplier expectations is to highlight key priority activities and emphasize broader,
more philosophical issues universal to all suppliers (ToyotaSupplier.com, 2012)." In addition, "individual expectations, on the other hand, are developed
uniquely for each supplier and include specific targets in the key areas of quality, delivery, value improvement and minority sourcing

Toyota Motor Company Analysis
Executive Summary: This report provides a detailed company description of the giant automaker Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), along with an in
depth analysis and evaluation of their logistics, marketing, human resource management and international strategy. What is currently being questioned
is the allowance of TMC to cross our borders and begin operations within our country. After reviewing all evidence found for and against allowing
TMC to enter our nation, it was made clear that TMC provides many opportunities for economic growth and ultimately a higher standard of living. It is
strongly recommended that Toyota Motor Company and all their business and operation activities be permitted and granted access to our country.

In addition, confidence is always attractive. It always draws attention and usually proves to be worth while.
Toyota considers the buyer as the master while the company itself plays the role of the slave. It seems like they yearn to provide the client, customer,
or buyer with the best possible service and products. In addition, everybody likes being the master. Therefore, it is natural for people to get attracted by
this company and have a rather enjoyable experience purchasing one of their products.
Company's Logistics Approach: Toyota's approach to logistics has been a model that underwent many years of development to become what it is today.
Taking a humble approach to manufacturing methods and learning from industries other than the auto industry, Toyota's logistic model, known as the
Toyota Production System (TMS), has become a homework assignment for all other automakers around the globe. To properly implement the TMS

The Houston Rockets have won two NBA Championships and four Western Conference titles in their time. In their 2017 season, they finished third in

MBA800: Business Strategy Case Toyota Motor Corporation – Launching the Prius Executive Summary: Hiroshi Okuda, Toyota Motor Company is
most recent appointed president, must decide whether to continue endorsing the project committee in charge of developing a fuel–efficient vehicle, the
Prius. The project is made to be a shift for Toyota; yet developing the prototype has represented a large cost for the company since the technology
needed to be created from scratch. Toyota has been recently criticized for producing non–innovative, look–alike models, not attractive for young new
customers. Despite that Toyota Motor Company has registered an increase in its net sales; the profit margins have substantially fallen for the past 5
years.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, abandoning the project would mean a complete loss of the resources invested in the past two years. Toyota would continue to be criticized for
producing similar, non–innovative cars that could represent a continuing lose of its market share and profit margins. Recommendation: Toyota should
continue developing the Prius, despite the technical difficulties present at the moment. The company's kaizen maxim is the most reliable tool to
guarantee that, once mass–production of the Prius starts, the new model will comply with Toyota's efficiency and reliability standards. The value
created by the Prius is not only that of uncovering a new possible market, but of making Toyota a carmaker that sets the standards of it (Exhibit D).
Okuda should continue to pressure the G21 to produce a safe, reliable and innovative car. The Prius should be produced by 1997 to avoid other
companies winning the race, as happened with the Direct Injection technology. Additionally, the Prius should be marketed first in Japan. Japan is not
only Toyota's largest market (allowing to have more cars to be evaluated by the production line staff); but also the gasoline prices are the highest
among its different markets, a car 100% more fuel–efficient would be of great value for potential buyers. If the car probes to be a success, Toyota will
have in its hands a product able to be commercialized to its other markets in America and Europe. The hybrid powertrain will not only make Toyota a

  • 1. Toyota and Gm Supplier Relationship Manangement &... Business Case Analysis: #1 Toyota, Ford, GM and Volkswagen –Some Differing Opinions about working with Suppliers. CASE SUMMARY: Toyota Motor Corporation is one of the world's leading auto manufacturers. Toyota has been approached by two large US automakers, GM and Ford, to join their Internet–based marketplaces where the automakers and their suppliers hope to do business more efficiently and drastically reduce costs by giving the suppliers access to more business and by trading billions of dollars worth of goods and services in the marketplace. Both Ford and GM have embraced the concept of an electronic marketplace for motor vehicle parts and are in fierce competition to enroll large non–US automakers to their camps. Toyota's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in situations where competition for contracts is fierce, price wars may break out resulting in decrease in quality of the products in order to meet the lowest supplier price. The entire culture of the Toyota Company revolves around the "Toyota Way". In operating the "Toyota Way" one of the key elements is respect for people: Employees, Customers & Suppliers. There are 14 principles that constitute the Toyota Way. The principles are organized in four broad categories: 1) Long–Term Philosophy, is a number one. By joining the Internet marketplace, Toyota would go against its own number one principle and against its "Toyota Way". In addition, Toyota, being the champion of kaizen, quality and lean philosophy is very well aware of the very likely sacrifice of the quality of products it depends on to produce high quality cars, once it joined the Internet marketplace. By nurturing relationships with suppliers and treating them as partners, Toyota has been very successful in harvesting the benefits of a good relationship with its suppliers, receiving high quality products, on time and according to specifications. Without such close and long term relationships, Toyota would not have been so successful in implementing and maintaining excellent JIT supply chain as well as lean philosophy just to name the few. Defining Toyota Production System Terms Some of the various assessment tools used to better assess and evaluate the Toyota Production System (TPS) are: Andon is a visual or audible system used to notify both management and production workers when a problem or issue occurs in the production process. The goal of andon is to quickly identify a problem, and its location, so that the issue may be rectified quickly thus reducing downtime in the production process. As of 2014 Toyota began to retire what has become known as the andon cord, or emergency cable, in the auto industry and a symbol of quality for a new push button design. Yellow buttons placed at waist level and easy to access along the production process have become the standard. Toyota first switched to push buttons during renovation of the Tsutsumi plant in Japan, but has not yet switched in North America. Warning lights in hospitals rooms for patient monitoring is a form of andon. Hoshin is the process of establishing direction, through proper management, and setting goals and objectives for everyone to achieve. The hoshin process has three parts: select a key objective, align implementation at all levels, and implement–review–improve. • 32. "Toyota's information and decision making has been highly centralized. The result: Top management in Japan has been less sensitive to the expectations of regulators, culture and politics in overseas markets, and consequently, they have been slower to respond to local problems. The reality is that Toyota's problems were not caused by a faulty production system but by poor management decisions" (Cole, 2011, pg. 34). In the past, Toyota was a company that trained employees to embrace the Toyota Way and pushed their employees to strive for continuous improvement and perfection. The upper management at Toyota has strayed away from their core; founding principles that empowered their employees and contributed to making them a successful automobile manufacturing juggernaut. A major source for of their ongoing improvement and innovation has been from employees. An analysis has been done for Toyota's management team, Appendix A, E and F, to show the root causes and how these root causes affect the internal communication process of ideas, concerns and knowledge between Toyota's upper management and its foreign–based employees. To summarize the problem into a statement: "The Toyota Way and TPS places heavy emphasis teamwork, employee empowerment and striving for continual improvement and perfection. To ensure these principles are always understood and embraced, Toyota's management needs to be committed to making sure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It also considers the waste due to overload and waste dude to over burden. Lean manufacturing also best known as Toyota production system or kaizen production system. Although the Toyota production system was introduced more than a century ago it has continue to develop over time. It was practiced by the Henry Ford for the manufacturing of Ford model T which was very successful between the years 1908 to 1920 which almost sold 2 Million cars a year. In particular, the report scrutinized the $7,500 tax credit that the government is now offering to consumers who purchase plug–in hybrids like Chevrolet's Volt or all–electric vehicles like Nissan's Leaf. This credit, the CBO estimate, will cost $2 billion between 2009 and 2019. In the short term, this credit is unlikely to make electric cars affordable, the report argues. Even with the tax break, an average plug–in hybrid would still cost roughly $4,000 more over its lifespan than a conventional vehicle of similar size and performance, assuming that gasoline prices continue to average around $3.60 per gallon (an assumption that might be wrong). In other words, the tax credit would have to be much bigger to make electric vehicles competitive. That's one reason why CBO only seems to be expecting around 270,000 or so electric vehicles to get sold over the next seven years–far below President Obama's goal of putting one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. Still, the report notes, those sales figures could very well go up if either the cost of gasoline goes higher or the price of electricity goes down. (Alternatively, the cost of batteries might also plunge–a recent report from McKinsey & Company predicted that lithium–ion battery prices could fall by as much as two–thirds this decade, giving a major boost to the industry.) The company's kaizen maxim is the most reliable tool to guarantee that, once mass–production of the Prius starts, the new model will comply with Toyota's efficiency and reliability standards. The value created by the Prius is not only that of uncovering a new possible market, but of making Toyota a carmaker that sets the standards of it (Exhibit D).
