NARRATIVE AND PICTORIAL REPORT ON
SCHOOL – BASED NATIONAL SIMULTAINEOUS EARTHQUAKE
DRILL SEPTEMBER 9, 2021
I.INTRODUCTION
The National simultaneous earthquake drill (NSED) done virtually on Thursday afternoon
was able to sustain public awareness on “duck, cover and hold” scenario, according to the
Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).
The NSED done during the pandemic is primarily developed to enhance the
understanding of the participants and the public regarding the steps and procedures that must
be performed before, during and after an earthquake. Moreover, it also serves as a way to
enhance the existing plans for earthquake preparedness.
I. HIGLIGHTS OF ACCOMPLISHMMENTS
It is best to be prepared and ready for all eventualities, because no one can
predict when earthquakes will happen. Schools even when partially should be the center
of awareness when it comes to natural disasters such as an earthquake. However, with
proper training and advance planning, everyone in our school community can be prepared
to react appropriately during and after the occurrence of an earthquake even in the
pandemic.
In response to National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill, Bugarin National High
School conducted the Community–Based Earthquake Drill for the month of September 9
,2021. It was participated by 214 pupils from grade 7-12, 15 teachers, 3 non-teaching
personnel, the drill started at exactly 2:00 pm in the afternoon .
The activity aims to heighten the community’s awareness on what to do during an
earthquake amidst the pandemic.
The School Disaster Risk Reduction Management Coordinator together with the.
Officials did an evaluation. Some of the observations they recorded during the conduct of
the drill where as follows:
1 Lack of necessary emergency equipment’s are present within households
2 Communication is very limited due to the pandemic
3 Additional precautionary signages can be of great help for the community
4 Supportfromthe local governmentis very limited
2. 1 Formaltraining should be given to the teachers and parents when it comes to
giving firstaid.
2 Emergency contact numbers should be present and visiblewithin the community
3 Cooperativedrill considering new normal protocols governmentshould be
conducted.
4 Practical means of transportation for victims of such accidents should be given
emphasis.
The students virtually practiced the duck, cover and hold technique; even the
teachers have done the procedure. Closely monitored by their advisers the students
together with their families participated and performed well during the activity.
II. CONCLUSION:
This activity magnifies the eagerness of everyone specially the local government to
prepare every household during emergency situations such as an earthquake. The
initiative would greatly effect on how we shall act in guidance with new set of protocols
given to us by the IATF.
III. RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that future training on Basic First Aid would be given to atleast one
member of each student’s family as well as advanced training for teachers. Given the
situation brought to us by the pandemic., it is very timely for virtual seminars and trainings
that can better equip each participant.
