Editor's Notes
Dr. Lester Breslow of UCLA (fly in) conducted a research study over a period of nine years. He asked 7,000 people seven questions relating to health habits and then observed these patients, comparing those who had followed positive health habits with those who had not. Here are the seven questions he asked:

Those who faithfully followed good health habits relating to the seven questions lived an average of 11.5 years longer than those who did not. Would you like to extend your life eleven and a half years beyond the average?
The principles of long life are found right in your Bible.
Our study tonight is: Living Life to the Fullest

After the flood, when all the vegetation had been killed, God permitted Noah and his family to eat flesh food from the animals they had taken in the ark.

God made provision before the flood for the needs of Noah’s family. “You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female;
two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female.” (Genesis 7:2)
God did not intend for Noah to eat the unclean animals. He provided more of the clean animals for eating and sacrificing. Eating clean meat is not a sin. We know that Jesus ate fish, and He never sinned.
“So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence.” (Luke 24:42,43) In some areas of the world it is difficult or impossible to provide an adequate diet without meat. This was the case at the time Jesus lived.

God provided the Israelites with a diet free from flesh. After the people complained, God gave them meat in the wilderness, and many died. (See the story in Numbers 11)
The best diet was man’s original diet, given by God in Eden, and again in the wilderness. It is a vegetarian diet. The life span of man was greatly reduced after the flood when meat became a part of the diet.
Noah lived 950 years, his son Shem lived 600 years, and his son lived 438 years. Eight generations later Abraham lived only 175 years.
Modern day studies show that vegetarians who also abstain from smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol have
lower coronary heart disease, lower incidence of breast or prostate cancer, and live as much as six years longer on average than meat eaters. (Source: You and Your Health, Review and Herald Publishing Association.)

: In some places the Bible seems to condone the use of wine. But the word “wine” in the Bible does not always refer to fermented juice or alcohol. The term also applies to unfermented juice. For example: “Thus says the LORD: ‘As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it.’” (Isaiah 65:8) The Bible warns against the use of fermented drinks.

The use of alcohol affects one’s ability to think and speak clearly. It perverts the judgment and deadens the conscience to right and wrong.
Alcohol contributes to the shrinking of the brain, cirrhosis of the liver, and cardiomyopathy. (Source: You and Your Health)

Dr. Lee S. Berk, a leading researcher at Loma Linda University, calls laughter “internal jogging.” Dr. Berk is one of the foremost authorities in the nation on laughter and healing, and has found that it decreases significant stress hormones such as cortisol, a substance that suppresses immune system components. His studies further indicate that mirthful laughter appears to increase antibodies called immunoglobulins, which help fight infections.

Following God’s laws of health keep us from many diseases. For instance:
lung cancer in people who have never smoked is almost nonexistent.
In a survey done with Californian Seventh Day Adventists, of the 3,913 members who had never smoked, only one died of lung cancer. (Source: You and Your Health)

Physical activity, especially work, is an important part of health.
“For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10)

God did not make our bodies to work without rest. One of the reasons he gave man the Sabbath was to provide time for him to rest.

Speaking of the Israelites during their years in the wilderness Psalm 105:37 says, “And there was none feeble among His tribes.” God’s blessing is an important part of good health.

When we know that following the laws of health will add years to our life, but we disregard them and shorten our life, we are guilty of taking from God the years that we could have served Him.

God’s laws of health are proven to be best. Medical science continues to collaborate what the Bible has said for thousands of years.
Paul urges us to present our bodies a living sacrifice to God, and suggests that this is “reasonable service.” The word reasonable comes from the Greek “logikos,” meaning logical. Keeping our bodies in the best shape possible and extending our lives as much as we can is not a restriction from God: it is the logical thing to do.
