The Product Structure concept
Introduction
The product structure, also called PBS (Product
Breakdown Structure) is a hierarchical breakdown
that provides a complete list of all the
components and intermediate assemblies that
composes a final product.
Let’s start with a simple example, a bike :
Bike
Bike Frame
Head Tube
Top Tube
Down Tube
…
Front Parts
Fork
Brake Levers
Handle bar
…
Wheel

Tires

…

…
Wikipedia : Product structure is a hierarchical decomposition of a product, typically known as the bill of
materials (BOM). As business becomes more responsive to unique consumer tastes and derivative
products grow to meet the unique configurations, BOM management can become unmanageable. For
manufacturers, a bill of materials (BOM) is a critical product information record that lists the raw
materials, assemblies, components, parts and the quantities of each needed to manufacture a product.

The product structure
In details

Into the industry, the product structure
usually follows some common rules, with
complex breakdown that also handles the
configurations of the product.
As the PBS is a breakdown of the product, it
contains the structural information, but
additional data related to elements of this PBS
are produced by a lot of other tools !
This leads to challenges linked to data!

What are the challenges around product
structure & data continuity?
In a nutshell : because accessing global product data is complex…
Most of our customers face the same issues with using their own data efficiently.
❑ Segregation
PLM, ERP, Business Own Tool, obscure spreadsheets… Even with digitalization no system is able to address the full
landscape of data generated in large companies. Finding the right information often means traversing several entities
and tools.
❑ Standardization
Amongst these several tools, there is very few chance that they share a common format allowing to exchange
information. User have to perform manual operations to reach the information.
❑ Performance
Most systems are not designed to expose their data efficiently : in the best situation they provide tools allowing
humans to manually export a small dataset. Working at the global product scale it out of scope of these tools.

❑ A product breakdown structure can be
represented as a tree with nodes and structural
relationship between nodes.
❑ It is an Acyclic and Connex Graph that can
be immediately transposed into a Neo4j Node-
Edge model.
❑ But Product Structure alone is not enough and
need to be enriched from various meta data as
properties to offer added value.
❑ That is where properties graphs pops out !

HELIOS links data together

thanks to the 3D display.
Our approach to Product Structure modeling : HELIOS
Helios aggregates data from heterogeneous data sources and exposes them in a secured API for other
applications to consume.
Structured data can be
requested by a data
consumer through a
dedicated API

CONCLUSION
Graph Technology in the industry, an exciting challenge for Sopra Steria & Airbus Helicopters
Graph technologies are quite new into the aeronautics industry but provides a new paradigm to
help solving challenges related to digital continuity and the large amount of data that comes
with it.
Graph technologies like Neo4j will help to:
❑ Reinforce connectivity between data, keeping high performances.
❑ Help developing inference computation (Tech data, BOM management)
❑ Configuration analysis (BOM comparison)
❑ Data Analytics (KPI, Quality of data … )
As this technology is recent for the industry, the experience must be consolidated and built step by
step into a multiparadigm approach.
Looking forward to present the evolution into a future conference !!
