Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who
wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language
classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively
as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the
boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases.
Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First,
English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content...
Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my
Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on
speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking
and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native
languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in
English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures.
The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on
listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese
group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language.
Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment
showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and
speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of
months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of
"very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my

Essay on My Learning Journey so Far
Learning in a Changing World has brought on a number of positive learning experiences. The
knowledge I have gained and theory I have completed through assessments and in class discussions
and tasks has broadened my understanding of learning. It is evident through this text that the
theoretical perspectives focused on in this subject have had a place in the process of my learning
journey throughout the semester. Whether this learning has been learning a new skill for an
assessment, observing learning and assisting teaching on placement or collaborative learning in the
tutorials, it is clear a number of theories tie into these learning experiences.
As I began my journey of learning a new skill which was how to play a song on the piano, I was

I was lucky enough to be placed at Thornbury Primary School for my first week of placement. On
many occasions throughout the five days I assisted students with their work, from small group
work to working one on one with students. At times it was difficult helping student as some
needed more motivation than others, some learnt at a slower rate than others and at times I
needed to come up with strategies to tackle challenges I faced. One challenge was assisting a boy
in the class who had special needs. The class began with their Reading Workshop and first off
everyone was required to read a chapter of their book to a class mate or Pre Service Teacher.
Although the boy I was working with refused to read to me, I began to use a number of strategies
to motivate him to complete the task at hand. Mooney (2013) expresses Vygotsky's concept, The
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), it has been articulated in this text that this ZPD is the space
among what someone is capable of without assistance and what someone is capable of with
assistance from a peer or teacher. I implemented this theory with the student, begging with observing
the situation and determining where he was at in his learning process and what he was able to
achieve. I began to think that maybe he was not too confidant to

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

My Positive and Negative Learning Exp.
Positive learning experienceI have had many negative learning experiences, but at the same time I
have had a good number of positive ones, that I have enjoyed and have benefited from
greatly.Learning English as a foreign language at one of the clubs in my town back in Russia was,
probably, the best learning experiences I have had so far. But what made it so positive?First of all,
the motivation factor. I was 15 years old and very passionate about learning English. I wanted to be
able to use it for my career as a teacher and simply in daily communication with my friends,
American missionaries. The ability to speak another language opened up a whole new world for me
of a different culture, people, literature, films, music and mentality. I...show more content...
Secondly, the teacher failed to provide materials and resources that worked with all or most learning
styles. I am a visual – learning student. Often I struggled during the lessons to follow or recall
information that was "heard" in a lesson. If I had been provided some visual aids when studying I
would have retained more information. This visual tools would have improved my ability to store or
and recall information more completely and effectively. And thirdly, the communicative approach
was very rarely used, if at all during the lessons. Communicative language teaching makes use of
real–life situations that produce communication. Our teacher, unfortunately, rarely set up situations
that we could encounter in real life. My learning was not motivated by real–life simulations and
meaningful topics. We were learning the language out of context, both linguistic and social. Some
situational context was still present though. We rarely engaged in class discussions when we
could have shared our experiences and viewpoints. The teacher talked more and listened less.
Because of my decreased responsibility to participate, I was losing confidence in using the target
language in general. I felt less responsible for my own learning. As a result, my grades were low, so
was my self–esteem. My damaged self–esteem caused my negative learning cycle to progress. I
missed quite a few classes. I lacked motivation for any classwork and became withdrawn. This

Importance Of Learning A Foreign Language Essay
Learning a foreign language involves developing new skills and going through different stages. The
four skills you need to develop are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You need to be able to
understand when someone speaks the language you are learning. In addition to that, you need to be
able to express yourself in that language. Most of the time, the written language is more complex
than the spoken language. You want to be able to understand a text you read. Moreover, you want to
be able to express your ideas in writing, with the right words and correct grammar. Acquiring these
four skills requires various study patterns.
Building Vocabulary
First of all, you need to build vocabulary. Building vocabulary involves learning the meaning of the
words, their spelling, and pronunciation. Unlike in English, each word has a gender in many
languages like French, Spanish, and German. You need to memorize the gender of a word in order
to use it correctly. You also need to learn the conjugations of verbs and adjectives. That is where you
cross the border between the vocabulary and grammar.
Studying Grammar
In order to learn a foreign language, you need to study its grammar, the structural rules of a
language. Most of the time, grammar is a complicated subject to understand, to learn, and to use
correctly. To make things even more complicated, you will need to memorize the exceptions to the
grammar rules you learn.
Reading
If you have sufficient vocabulary and a good

Importance Of Learning English Essay
Nowadays, English has a significant role in the society. Person in the world has been aware about
the usefullness of English because of that role. The people are enthusiastics to be able to use
English in their lives. Therefore, the major of English has been one of the most favorite majors for
the learners, especially in the university level. Moreover, this fact makes a great impact on the
number of the learners that want to take major of English. In learning English, actually, the learners
will find four main skills in their learning activity. Those four skills are reading, writing, listening
and speaking. Since those are the main skills in English, absolutely, the learners have to understand
and master each of the skill in order to reach their deep understanding in English. However, what
can be seen in the field is that the learners seem not understand the four main skills deeply, so it
makes the students only understand the surface of each skill. Then, because of that, the learners are
only able to make simple products with many errors. From those four skills, writing is one of the
most important skill that the students have to mastered. Wilson (2003: 212) stated that learning how
to write well is really important. Writing is one of the most important things that students do with
their education. By writing, the author can convey a message or information to the reader, and what
authors create and collect will not disappear just because it has been poured on the paper. The

Reflection On English Course
After taking the University English course for a semester, I realize the course content is different
from my anticipation but it is much more useful than what I expected. The aspects that I would like
to improve in this course including my speaking, reading and writing skills. As the course mainly
focus on the writing part, I find it really helpful and practical for my subsequent studies. Especially
for the sentence structures part, which is also the main improvement I would like get from this
course, it really inspires me a lot. I hoped I could master the use of different sentence structures
because my previous writings were limited in some simple and dull structures, making my writing
mediocre. After participating in this course, I really gain a lot. Many unclear concepts in sentence
patterns that I have had since my secondary school are cleared now. For instance, in making some
complex sentences, I always make grammatical mistakes and use erroneous subjects but do not know
why they are wrongly used. The...show more content...

evaluate my performance in this semester, I discover I was diligent in the first few lessons but
was not absorbed in the subsequent lessons due to the heavy workload of other subjects. I will try
my best not to be a deadline fighter in next semester so that I can enjoy and focus on the lessons.
Apart from improving my English through this course, I planned to do some actions in my daily
lives in order to achieve my English goals. For example, I decided to read more English books and
newspapers. It was difficult for me to read the whole books so I changed to watch English films
and videos with English subtitles. Also, I read BBC News in the website twice a week. I found my
English become better as I knew more vocabularies and my reading speed became

Goals for English Essay
Henry David Thoreau once said, "In the long run, men hit only that they aim at, therefore they
had better aim at something high." I agree with Thoreau completely. When you have goals in life,
you're going to do anything and everything to accomplish those goals. Therefore why not set
higher goals that you will endeavor just with diminutive amount of more effort? One semester of
English has gone by and there's another semester to go. Even though I have done fairly well in
English the first semester, I would like to do even better the second semester. I can only do better if
I have a plan and this plan is the different types of goals I am going to set for myself. You can't be a
good student by just doing well in...show more content...
Another problem that I'm having in my writing that I would like to improve next marking period is
using less words. I tend to use too many words and make my writing too wordy. It's not that I repeat
sentences, I just tend to add too many details that aren't even needed. I plan on fixing this problem by
always going through my writing and seeing which words I could take out that would not make the
sentence any different. I believe that writing is all about quality and not quantity. Someone could
have a 5 page essay, but if there's no quality in the essay then the essay is useless.
Thinking:
The thought process is a very important process, therefore you can never be too good of a thinker.
There's always need for improvement. I am able to think much better this year but somehow my
ideas are never organized. I always analyze the material I am given but don't ever try to associate it
with other things we have learned. I think I can start organizing my ideas by writing down my ideas
and brain storming. I'm not used to brainstorming but if that's what I need to do to become a better
thinker then there's never a better time to start.
Listening:
Listening is very important and even nature tells us that. Nature gave us one tongue and two ears
so we could hear twice as much as we speak. I would definitely like to be a more conscientious
listener. I have became a better listener due to the assessment

writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

Many of their learning needs are similar to those of other children and young people learning in our
schools. However, these learners also have distinct and different needs from other learners by virtue
of the fact that they are learning in and through another language, and that they come from cultural
backgrounds and communities with different understandings and expectations of education, language

There are many factors that influence the diverse needs of an individual EAL learner that need to be
assessed and taken into account when providing adequate classroom support: * the age at which
learners enter the educational system * their previous experience of schooling and literacy in their
first language; * their knowledge, skills and understanding of languages and the school curriculum; *
home and community expectations and understanding of the education system; * support structures
for learning and language development at home and at school (NALDIC, 1999)
The Welsh Government has categorised the different stages of language development that an EAL

significant amount of support * C – developing competence: on going support * D – competent:
occasional support to access curriculum

Schools in the United States of America (USA) are facing many challenges, because of the

Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment,
such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate
from their home language and their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered,

(Katz & Bauch, n.d., p. 189), in providing the effective support, and assistant with the full
understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural
pressure could be increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students
need to have a teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new a language; without allowing
them to lose their cultural identity.

Learning English For A Long Time
Reflective Essay
I have been studying and learning English for a long time. Obviously, it is true to say that I have
a strong passion for learning English. Therefore, I am willing to do and try anything as it helps
me to improve my English skills. Fortunately, I took this English 908 class and met Professor
Lang who always sympathizes with his students and devotes his time and knowledge to help them
produce the highest quality work. This class offered me the ability to be aware of my personal
strengths as well as weaknesses as a writer and also provided me methods to strengthen them. When
English 908 class almost comes to the end, I proud to say that my writing skill has improved
significantly, especially in citing documentaries, free–writing and more important I am able to find
out and correct all of the errors in my papers. Before this class, it was a tough challenge for me to
express my ideas in English, especially when English is my second language. Difficulty starting
an essay is always my biggest problem. This is because I don't write much and I rarely write a
draft for my papers. For example, whenever I received a topic, I always started to think how
should I begin the opening, then I started to write it down immediately. Unluckily, because of this
method, sometimes I got stuck in brainstorming the ideas. Other times some new ideas appeared in
the middle of my writing process and I wondered where to put it because those were the great ideas.

Essay On English Language Teaching
English Language Teaching Methods
Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a
foreign language not as a second language. Because considering English as a second language and
as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom,
English is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if
one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed person. Many Asian countries treat the
pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers
neglect this aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words
because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of
the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students.
So teachers have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes
all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more meaningful. All the methods are not
meaningful when teacher choose them as per the needs of the classroom.

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It

write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and

activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

Importance Of English Language Arts Essay
What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English
Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of communicating thoughts. Every subject is
important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds
complexity of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language
arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an interviewer notices is one's ability to
articulate, and learning English Language Arts helps to obtain that goal. Being able to communicate,
express one's self, and build life skills, are the reasons why English Language Arts is the most
important subject in our education. First and foremost, the...show more content...
However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how
to create stories by being imaginative, or write poetry by thinking creatively. Writing takes critical
thinking, a general skill widely used in life. Subjects like math or science may use critical thinking,
but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning
language arts have taught me to be more expressive; you will never know if your words could
inspire someone one day.
Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the
outside world. The first impression in an interview is how you present yourself, not how many
achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the
questions, are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in
high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The senior portfolio is probably one
of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as
a student and as an individual. Learning how to create a good portfolio from Language Arts class
shows one's education level. In addition, companies recruit people with a good education, what you
have learned in English Language Arts will prepare you in college, and your future career.
In conclusion, English Language Arts is the most

Learning English Essay Example

  • 1. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on My Learning Journey so Far Learning in a Changing World has brought on a number of positive learning experiences. The knowledge I have gained and theory I have completed through assessments and in class discussions and tasks has broadened my understanding of learning. It is evident through this text that the theoretical perspectives focused on in this subject have had a place in the process of my learning journey throughout the semester. Whether this learning has been learning a new skill for an assessment, observing learning and assisting teaching on placement or collaborative learning in the tutorials, it is clear a number of theories tie into these learning experiences. As I began my journey of learning a new skill which was how to play a song on the piano, I was ...show more content... I was lucky enough to be placed at Thornbury Primary School for my first week of placement. On many occasions throughout the five days I assisted students with their work, from small group work to working one on one with students. At times it was difficult helping student as some needed more motivation than others, some learnt at a slower rate than others and at times I needed to come up with strategies to tackle challenges I faced. One challenge was assisting a boy in the class who had special needs. The class began with their Reading Workshop and first off everyone was required to read a chapter of their book to a class mate or Pre Service Teacher. Although the boy I was working with refused to read to me, I began to use a number of strategies to motivate him to complete the task at hand. Mooney (2013) expresses Vygotsky's concept, The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), it has been articulated in this text that this ZPD is the space among what someone is capable of without assistance and what someone is capable of with assistance from a peer or teacher. I implemented this theory with the student, begging with observing the situation and determining where he was at in his learning process and what he was able to achieve. I began to think that maybe he was not too confidant to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Positive and Negative Learning Exp. Positive learning experienceI have had many negative learning experiences, but at the same time I have had a good number of positive ones, that I have enjoyed and have benefited from greatly.Learning English as a foreign language at one of the clubs in my town back in Russia was, probably, the best learning experiences I have had so far. But what made it so positive?First of all, the motivation factor. I was 15 years old and very passionate about learning English. I wanted to be able to use it for my career as a teacher and simply in daily communication with my friends, American missionaries. The ability to speak another language opened up a whole new world for me of a different culture, people, literature, films, music and mentality. I...show more content... Secondly, the teacher failed to provide materials and resources that worked with all or most learning styles. I am a visual – learning student. Often I struggled during the lessons to follow or recall information that was "heard" in a lesson. If I had been provided some visual aids when studying I would have retained more information. This visual tools would have improved my ability to store or and recall information more completely and effectively. And thirdly, the communicative approach was very rarely used, if at all during the lessons. Communicative language teaching makes use of real–life situations that produce communication. Our teacher, unfortunately, rarely set up situations that we could encounter in real life. My learning was not motivated by real–life simulations and meaningful topics. We were learning the language out of context, both linguistic and social. Some situational context was still present though. We rarely engaged in class discussions when we could have shared our experiences and viewpoints. The teacher talked more and listened less. Because of my decreased responsibility to participate, I was losing confidence in using the target language in general. I felt less responsible for my own learning. As a result, my grades were low, so was my self–esteem. My damaged self–esteem caused my negative learning cycle to progress. I missed quite a few classes. I lacked motivation for any classwork and became withdrawn. This Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Importance Of Learning A Foreign Language Essay Learning a foreign language involves developing new skills and going through different stages. The four skills you need to develop are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You need to be able to understand when someone speaks the language you are learning. In addition to that, you need to be able to express yourself in that language. Most of the time, the written language is more complex than the spoken language. You want to be able to understand a text you read. Moreover, you want to be able to express your ideas in writing, with the right words and correct grammar. Acquiring these four skills requires various study patterns. Building Vocabulary First of all, you need to build vocabulary. Building vocabulary involves learning the meaning of the words, their spelling, and pronunciation. Unlike in English, each word has a gender in many languages like French, Spanish, and German. You need to memorize the gender of a word in order to use it correctly. You also need to learn the conjugations of verbs and adjectives. That is where you cross the border between the vocabulary and grammar. Studying Grammar In order to learn a foreign language, you need to study its grammar, the structural rules of a language. Most of the time, grammar is a complicated subject to understand, to learn, and to use correctly. To make things even more complicated, you will need to memorize the exceptions to the grammar rules you learn. Reading If you have sufficient vocabulary and a good Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Importance Of Learning English Essay Nowadays, English has a significant role in the society. Person in the world has been aware about the usefullness of English because of that role. The people are enthusiastics to be able to use English in their lives. Therefore, the major of English has been one of the most favorite majors for the learners, especially in the university level. Moreover, this fact makes a great impact on the number of the learners that want to take major of English. In learning English, actually, the learners will find four main skills in their learning activity. Those four skills are reading, writing, listening and speaking. Since those are the main skills in English, absolutely, the learners have to understand and master each of the skill in order to reach their deep understanding in English. However, what can be seen in the field is that the learners seem not understand the four main skills deeply, so it makes the students only understand the surface of each skill. Then, because of that, the learners are only able to make simple products with many errors. From those four skills, writing is one of the most important skill that the students have to mastered. Wilson (2003: 212) stated that learning how to write well is really important. Writing is one of the most important things that students do with their education. By writing, the author can convey a message or information to the reader, and what authors create and collect will not disappear just because it has been poured on the paper. • 7. Reflection On English Course After taking the University English course for a semester, I realize the course content is different from my anticipation but it is much more useful than what I expected. The aspects that I would like to improve in this course including my speaking, reading and writing skills. As the course mainly focus on the writing part, I find it really helpful and practical for my subsequent studies. Especially for the sentence structures part, which is also the main improvement I would like get from this course, it really inspires me a lot. I hoped I could master the use of different sentence structures because my previous writings were limited in some simple and dull structures, making my writing mediocre. After participating in this course, I really gain a lot. Many unclear concepts in sentence patterns that I have had since my secondary school are cleared now. Apart from improving my English through this course, I planned to do some actions in my daily lives in order to achieve my English goals. For example, I decided to read more English books and newspapers. It was difficult for me to read the whole books so I changed to watch English films and videos with English subtitles. • 8. Goals for English Essay Henry David Thoreau once said, "In the long run, men hit only that they aim at, therefore they had better aim at something high." I agree with Thoreau completely. When you have goals in life, you're going to do anything and everything to accomplish those goals. Therefore why not set higher goals that you will endeavor just with diminutive amount of more effort? One semester of English has gone by and there's another semester to go. Even though I have done fairly well in English the first semester, I would like to do even better the second semester. I can only do better if I have a plan and this plan is the different types of goals I am going to set for myself. You can't be a good student by just doing well in...show more content... Another problem that I'm having in my writing that I would like to improve next marking period is using less words. I tend to use too many words and make my writing too wordy. It's not that I repeat sentences, I just tend to add too many details that aren't even needed. I plan on fixing this problem by always going through my writing and seeing which words I could take out that would not make the sentence any different. I believe that writing is all about quality and not quantity. Someone could have a 5 page essay, but if there's no quality in the essay then the essay is useless. Thinking: The thought process is a very important process, therefore you can never be too good of a thinker. There's always need for improvement. I am able to think much better this year but somehow my ideas are never organized. I always analyze the material I am given but don't ever try to associate it with other things we have learned. I think I can start organizing my ideas by writing down my ideas and brain storming. I'm not used to brainstorming but if that's what I need to do to become a better thinker then there's never a better time to start. Listening: Listening is very important and even nature tells us that. Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak. I would definitely like to be a more conscientious listener. I have became a better listener due to the assessment Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate from their home language and their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered, treasured. • 16. Learning English For A Long Time Reflective Essay I have been studying and learning English for a long time. Obviously, it is true to say that I have a strong passion for learning English. Therefore, I am willing to do and try anything as it helps me to improve my English skills. Fortunately, I took this English 908 class and met Professor Lang who always sympathizes with his students and devotes his time and knowledge to help them produce the highest quality work. This class offered me the ability to be aware of my personal strengths as well as weaknesses as a writer and also provided me methods to strengthen them. When English 908 class almost comes to the end, I proud to say that my writing skill has improved significantly, especially in citing documentaries, free–writing and more important I am able to find out and correct all of the errors in my papers. Before this class, it was a tough challenge for me to express my ideas in English, especially when English is my second language. Difficulty starting an essay is always my biggest problem. This is because I don't write much and I rarely write a draft for my papers. For example, whenever I received a topic, I always started to think how should I begin the opening, then I started to write it down immediately. Unluckily, because of this method, sometimes I got stuck in brainstorming the ideas. Other times some new ideas appeared in the middle of my writing process and I wondered where to put it because those were the great ideas. However, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Essay On English Language Teaching English Language Teaching Methods Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students. So teachers have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more meaningful. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening.
