Expect the Unexpected: The Story of Pop Punk Band Little White Lies
1. You can tell a lot about a person by their image, as harsh as it sounds it’s true! But when I
met Chris I could never have guessed he would run around in khakis as a child, pretending
to be Steve Irwin. But that’s the catch with pop punk, nothing is as it seems. Mike’s heard
“they’re probably not the best people to be around”, I can’t count the times how many people
have turned their noses up at the stretchers and the tattoos, allowing that to dictate their
judgment of the person. But to Mike, Chris and many other people: pop punk is the most
accepting and dedicated genre no matter how intimidating they seem.
The “Little White Lies” experience of pop punk is to expect the unexpected, their first gig is a
prime example. “Didn’t really go according to plan…” gives the overall feel of their first stage
appearance. Though it was rushed and improvised it was raw and filled with their passion for
the genre, which was clear throughout our interview. Every ounce is poured into writing their
own songs. “It says who we are” shows Chris identifies with the lyrics and it gives them a
chance to really connect with the audience. The way Chris’ lyrics fit into Mike’s melody show
how well they work together and how dedicated they are to their music and the genre.
From skating to singing, this genre has clearly bound these boys together. Their shared
belief that pop punk unites it’s fans clearly sums up their attitude. “You might be in the pit, at
the barrier even at the bar and you connect.” This feeling of being connected runs
throughout each gig you attend because of how vulnerable everyone actually is. You look at
the people around you and see a part of yourself in there, part of your insecurities, your
hopes, your loves. The artist really make you feel involved and like they’re there with you,
not just performing at you. They’re there for the music and the fans, not the money or the
fame.
This passion and love bloomed whilst Mike and Chris were just jamming. They soon heard a
Death of Honour song and decided on the intriguing title of “Little White Lies”. Chris began
his musical love affair as a child whilst visiting his Grandad, bonded together by their love of
music Chris learnt more about the subject that would become his future career. Mike
however has taken life as it came to him, so I suppose pop punk came to him in a dream in
the middle of the night. A true pop punk fairy tale.
No matter where they came from they clearly share the same passion, dedication and drive
to succeed in this genre. Their new single “Game of Life” is out at the beginning of 2016,
they’re planning new gigs every week and are very positive about their future. But with all
these plans they’ve still kept their lives like an open book, preparing themselves for the
unexpected.
