1. Objective
On completion of this period, you would be able
to learn:
Functional Blocks of CPU.

2. Recap
What is a computer?
It is an electronic device which processes the
computer’s data.
Functional units of computer.
Input unit, memory unit, CPU, output unit.

3. Prerequisites
What are parts of the computer?
Input unit ,memory unit, CPU, output unit.
What is CPU?
Central Processing Unit.

5. CPU
CPU is the heart and brain of the computer.
It receives data as input.
It processes the data according to the
instructions.
And gives results as output.

6. CPU (contd)
Its primary function is to execute programs.
Beside executing programs,
the CPU also controls the operation of all other
components such as memory, input and output
devices.

7. CPU (contd)
Under its control , programs and data are stored
in the memory
And it displays the data on the CRT screen or
prints on the printer.
The CPU of a small computer is called
microprocessor.

8. CPU (contd...)
The CPU of a large computer contains a number
of microprocessors and other ICs on one or
more circuit boards.

9. Functional Block of CPU
ALU (Arithmetic & Logical Unit)
Timing & Control unit
Registers

11. CPU (Central processing unit) :
ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) :
It performs two types of operations
1. Arithmetic Operations
2. Logical operations.

12. Arithmetic operations
1. Addition(+)
2. Subtraction(-)
3. Multiplication(*)
4. Division(/)
Logical operations:
AND OR
NOT EXCLUSIVE OR

13. Timing & Control unit
Acts as the brain of a computer
It controls the operations of a CPU
Synchronizes the operations of various
devices
Generates timing signals such that
coordination among devices take place
