Board Report Settlements Schools Visits Recognition Poverty Communications Students Chinese New Year
1. Report to Board [February 7, 2012]
We still have an on-going bargaining impasse and job action – hoping
for a mutually agreed upon settlement soon.
Bill 28 class size and composition legislation will likely need to be tabled
in the next session given the requirements of the Supreme Court
decision by Madam Justice Susan Griffin.

Iona Whishaw has been recognized as one of the outstanding principals
across Canada – she joins 3 other leaders from BC later this month in
Toronto.
Attended the Child Poverty meeting at Langara along with several other
school trustees and staff from the district. Excellent panel that
continued the conversation from the previous panel about the mounting
concerns with regard to child and youth poverty.
I recently met with the Co-Chairs for DPAC as we have arranged to meet
on a regular basis through the course of this year to assist with good
communications. Town Hall meetings to be held on February 22 at Van
Tech. and 23rd
at Magee.
Participated in the Student Forum held last week – this was an excellent
event - many thanks to Rob Schindel, Patsy Peters and others for
assisting in the organization of this event. This will be the first of many
2. taking place as this now moves to school-based forums. The materials
from the forum are being collated along with video material with a view
to making this accessible and useful for some further concrete action
steps.
Will be attending the Spring Festival at a reception at the Chinese
Consulate on Friday evening.

Meeting next week with VSB and VPL staff – looking at sharing practices
and renewing an existing letter of agreement.
