2. Sound
There are many different sounds involved in film
openings such as:
• Music
• Silence
• Diegetic/Non-diegetic
• Theme music
• Dialogue/Voiceover
3. Music in film openings
• Music in film openings help create the
atmosphere and mood of a film opening.
• For example in horror films, music creates a
tense atmosphere but in comedy films, music
creates a happy atmosphere.
4. Diegetic/Non-diegetic
• Atonement uses diegetic sounds (there is a
typewriter) but this eventually becomes non-diegetic
and it becomes part of the music.
• The sounds also help establish the era.
5. Theme music
• Some films have their own theme music which
also helps establish a mood and it also can set
the era.
• For example, Western films have a particular
theme music and it helps set the era as
Westerns are generally set in the late 1880s.
6. Voiceover
• In Eternal Sunshine, there is a voiceover of the
main character (which is non-diegetic sound)
and is subjective as it describes thoughts.
• Voiceovers help connect the audience with
the character. The audience can understand
how the character feels and what they are
thinking.
