Evaluation task 1
1. Evaluation task 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
2. Tycho – ‘See’ and ‘Ascension’ music video.
Analysing the electro/ambient genre.
• In both these music videos by Tycho, we can see the obvious forms and conventions
displayed in the Ambient/electro genre, the most common goal for a music video in
this genre is to be a visual representation of the music with occasional cuts to the
artist performing.
• In ‘See’ and ‘Ascension’ Both narratives consist of a character exploring a beautiful
natural environment. Some defining shot types of the genre are long shots to
capture the natural environment, tracking and POV shots too make you feel like you
are with the character exploring the natural world. Because Ambient songs very
rarely contain lyrics, thought beats are used throughout to sync changes, drumbeats
to the cuts of the video.
• Thought beats are also used to represent tone colour, where the visuals on screen
will change depending on the mood of each part of the song. The editing seen within
these two videos are heaving uses of tinting, to help further represent the emotions
and tone colour of the music, slow motion to emphasise certain shots and phases in
the music and purposely making shots out of focus showing confusion and disarray to
then resolve it with a cenic shot
3. Andre LP – Into blue comparison.
• Andre LP’s music is heavily inspired by Tycho and the ambient genre. So
it was important that I could stick to the forms and conventions as
closely as I could. Like Tycho, my video’s narrative consists of a single
character exploring a scenic natural environment, with images
representing the ambient sounds in the song.
• I incorporated a lot of the shot types seen in Tycho’s videos, such as long
shots to capture the environment, Tracking shots to follow the character
and pov shots to make it seem like you are with him. Since this was an
Ambeint song, it did not contain any lyrics, so the use of thought beats
was essential, syncing each cut to the snare drum and syncing the the DJ
pressing buttons on the synth pad to sounds of the music.
• Another similarity is the use of tinting, I used a blue tint throughout to
represent the mellow colour tone that the music gives off, I also used
slow motion and shots that slowly fade into focus during quiet periods.
Similar to Tycho I also increased the pacing of the narrative in relation
to the pacing of the music.
