A project plan proposes recycling bikes from the Pacific Northwest to rural communities in Africa. The plan involves vetting a pilot project by May 2010, securing commitments from an NGO partner for funding and operations, obtaining government permissions in two African countries, and commitments from suppliers and shippers to deliver bikes. It also establishes local volunteer groups to prepare bikes for shipment and an in-country micro-business for ongoing maintenance.
Since 2001 I’ve traveled on photo safari to several countries on the African continent – S. Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. Has anyone else here traveled anywhere in Africa – or to a developing nation with a very large rural population with nearly non existent transportation infrastructure? If so, you may have noticed as I did that mobility is severely compromised for the rural population. It was after my first visit that the idea of Bicycles for Rural Africa arose.
Most of my time in these countries was spent in the bush but we would travel from place to place by jeep, traveling through the small towns scattered on main routes. Every so often we encountered a man on a bike. But rarely. I asked our guides about this – the reply was that “he who owns a bicycle is a rich man”. He can get to a job or take products to the market and buy necessities from the market. Sometimes he even carries water back to his family.
Ready Supply; Clear need. 1 million bikes are stolen in the u.s. alone Bikes stack up at police stations and may be sold at auction for pennies on the dollar. Thousands are abandoned, sold at garage sales or dumped. – Donate that bicycle! Works for cars!
Social Benefits: Job, go to market, social interaction between villages Economic: provide a means for people to raise their standard of living, provide local businesses to sell the bikes, sell parts and provide maintenance and training Environmental: Bicycles are a “0” carbon footprint technology.
