Cultural or Accelerated Eutrophication

A case study of integrated waste water treatment:

and chorine treatment are given.

connected marshes over 60 hectares of
marshland.
ī‚§ Appropriate plants, algae, fungi and
bacteria were seeded into this area, which
neutralize, absorb and assimilate the
pollutant
ī‚§ The water flows through the marshes, it
get purified naturally.
ī‚§ The marshes also constitute a sanctuary,
with high level of biodiversity in the form of
fishes, animals and birds that now reside
there.
ī‚§ A citizens group called Friends of the Arcata
Marsh (FOAM) is responsible for the upkeep

procedure, where waste products from one process

RADIOACTIVE WASTES:
ī‚§ Nuclear energy was hailed as a non-
polluting way for generating electricity.
ī‚§ Later on it was realized that it has two very
serious inherent problem:-
ī‚§ Accidental leakage, as occurred in Three
Mile Island and Chernobyl.
ī‚§ Safe disposal of radioactive wastes.
ī‚§ Radiation from radioactive waste causes
mutation at very high rate.
ī‚§ High dose of nuclear radiation is lethal, but
lower doses create genetic disorders and
also cause cancer.

pre-treatment, should be done in suitably
shielded containers buried within the rocks

GREEN HOUSE EFFECT AND GLOBAL WARMING:
ī‚§ The term “Greenhouse effect”
has been derived from a
phenomenon that occurs in
greenhouse.
ī‚§ In a greenhouse the glass
panel lets the light in, but
does not allow heat to
escape. Therefore the
greenhouse warms up, very
much like inside a car that
has been parked in the sun
for a few hours.
ī‚§ The greenhouse effect is a
naturally occurring
phenomenon that is
responsible for heating of
Earth’s surface and

earth would have been a chilly -18o C rather than the present
average of 15o C.
ī‚§ Clouds and gases reflect about one-fourth of the incoming solar
radiation and absorb some of it but half of incoming solar

is reflected back.
ī‚§ Earth’s surface re-emits heat in the form of infrared radiation but

Ozone (O3) gas is continuously formed by the action of UV rays on

and release active Cl atoms.

during reaction.

stratosphere, they have permanent and
continuing affects one Ozone levels.

the Antarctic region. This has resulted
in formation of a large area of thinned
ozone layer, commonly called as the
ozone hole.
