It delivers a dynamic, available, and cost-effective server platform that satisfies business and IT professionals by offeringA consistent, integrated approach that helps them solve fundamental business and IT challenges.A concrete platform that lets them take advantage of new applications and services that can be deployed on-premises and in private and public cloud environments.Windows Server 8 supports yesterday’s technologies and today’s business needs while preparing you for tomorrow’s innovations. Many of the new and improved features in Windows Server 8 can help you meet demanding business requirements. If you’re working with virtualized environments, many of the improvements in Hyper-V and storage technologies will help you enhance your virtual environment and reduce storage costs. For example, Windows Server 8 offers high-performance, continuously available file-share storage for server applications. Implementing this feature lets you store application data on inexpensive, easy-to-manage file shares and obtain nearly the same benefits you would expect from a storage area network (SAN).We built Windows Server 8 so you can capitalize on your existing investments. By choosing Windows Server 8 now, you are preparing for the future. As you continue to grow and work within a heterogeneous environment, you can select the path that is best for your business. Whether implementing a private cloud is around the corner or over the horizon for you, Windows Server 8 offers the best platform to prepare for and implement cloud optimized IT now.
Cloud optimize your IT with Windows Server 8When you cloud optimize your IT with Windows Server 8, you leverage the skills and investment you’ve already made in building a familiar and consistent platform. Windows Server 8 builds on that familiarity and cloud optimizes your IT. With Windows Server 8, you gain all the Microsoft experience behind building and operating private and public clouds, delivered as a dynamic, available, and cost-effective server platform.Windows Server 8 delivers value in four key ways:It takes you Beyond Virtualization. Windows Server 8 offers a dynamic, multitenant infrastructure that goes beyond virtualization technology to a complete platform for building a private cloud. It delivers The Power of Many Servers, with The Simplicity of One. Windows Server 8 offers you excellent economics by integrating a highly available and easy-to-manage multiserver platform. It opens the door to Every App on Any Cloud. Windows Server 8 is the broadest, most scalable and elastic web and application platform, giving you the flexibility to build and deploy applications on-premises, in the cloud, and in a hybrid environment using a consistent set of tools and frameworks. It Enables the Modern Workstyle. Windows Server 8 empowers IT to provide users with flexible access to data and applications anywhere on any device while simplifying management and maintaining security, control, and compliance.Let’s look at each of these areas in more detail.
Cloud optimize your IT with Windows Server 8We’ve just spent some time learning about the features in Windows Server 8 that help you cloud optimize your IT. To summarize, Windows Server 8 helps you:Scale and secure workloads, cost-effectively build a private cloud, and securely connect to cloud services.Efficiently manage infrastructure while maximizing uptime and minimizing failures and downtime.Build on an open and scalable web platform that supports cross-premises applications.Support a mobile and flexible workstyle that gives people access to information and data regardless of the infrastructure, network, device, or application used to access it.
The Microsoft private cloud is based on four key components:First, it’s All About the App. In addition to managing servers or virtual machines, our private cloud solution provides deep application insights to enable agile and predictable application services. Other private cloud or virtualization providers will only tell you what’s going on with your infrastructure; they don’t address your applications. Second, we’re Cross-Platform from the Metal Up. We’re open and provide broad choice for our customers based on their investments and preferences for development environments and technology:Provision your private cloud across multiple hypervisors, including Hyper-V, XenServer, and VMware V-spherePick the best hypervisor for your workload and run it in a Microsoft environment, with support for your server operating systems that includes deep insight for Windows and LinuxBuild, run, and extend your enterprise applications on the Microsoft private cloud regardless of the development framework you chooseThird, we offer Best-in-Class Performance. Microsoft offers best-in-class performance for running critical business applications in a private cloud setting at a lower cost—so IT can reap the economic benefits of the cloud. Consider these lab results, which prove performance for Microsoft applications on Microsoft private clouds:450,000 concurrent SharePoint users on one physical server with five virtual machines80,000 online transaction processing (OLTP) users on one server with four virtual machines20,000 Exchange mailboxes on one server with five virtual machinesThese highly scalable and high-performing results prove Hyper-V can be used to virtualize Tier 1 data center applications with confidence. Windows Server 8 with Hyper-V delivers not only the best value in virtualization available today, but also a platform that achieves up to 40% greater virtual machine density per hardware host than competing virtualization solutions. It’s no wonder Microsoft has been recognized by Gartner as a leader in server virtualization for our performance with Hyper-V.Fourth, the Microsoft private cloud is the Cloud on Your Terms. We believe we’ll live in a hybrid world for some time. Your investments are likely going to be distributed across physical, virtual, and cloud computing models, and you need the freedom to choose your model and environment. We’re the only company that can provide the kind of support required to build out a private cloud that supports cross-premises capabilities.
Four key attributes are necessary to successfully take advantage of these converging needs and innovations—to build and deploy a private cloud:Pooled Resources. We often hear that cloud computing is just “big virt,” but it’s not. Cloud computing uses virtualization, but it goes beyond by pooling resources and allowing you to dynamically provision and scale applications.Self-Service. Once resources are pooled, cloud computing provides a self-service, SLA-based IT infrastructure to business units and departments. Elasticity. Virtualization gave IT the concept of scale; cloud computing brings elasticity. By using pooled resources, you can dynamically scale resourcesup or down, in or out, enabling you to quickly deliver just enough capacity as needs change.Usage-Based. Pay only for what you use, when you need to use it.The biggest benefits of cloud computing are seen in three key areas:Focus. More people are able to focus on higher levels of the stack—like managing application SLAs and rolling out new applications—without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure.Agility. Every business wants the ability to respond quickly to changes in the market or the way the business is run. Economics. Virtualization has been a driver of efficiency in IT for nearly a decade. Cloud computing takes you further by allowing you to run multiple workloads on the same overall infrastructure, giving you better utilization across those resources. It also gives you elasticity, which helps you efficiently provision resources based on demand. Both these attributes ultimately reduce overall cost.By moving to a cloud-based model, you can increase your focus on the right things, increase your organizational agility to respond to market changes, and drive down costs across your infrastructure.
Administrators can use Hyper‑V Replica to replicate virtual machines over a network link in a storage-agnostic manner.Secure replication across the networkHyper-V Replica tracks the write operations on the primary virtual machine and replicates these changes to the replica server efficiently over a WAN. The network connection between the two servers uses the HTTP or HTTPS protocol and supports both integrated and certificate-based authentication. Connections configured to use integrated authentication aren’t encrypted; for an encrypted connection, you should choose certificate-based authentication. Hyper-V Replica is closely integrated with Windows failover clustering and provides seamless replication across different migration scenarios in the primary and replica servers.Simple configuration and managementHyper-V Replica includes the following tools to simplify management:An integrated user interface (UI) with Hyper-V Manager and the Failover Clustering Manager snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC)An extensible WMI interfaceA Windows PowerShell command-line interface scripting capability
Virtual machine live storage migrationA common scenario for live storage migration is rebalancingstorage to more efficiently use existing storage space. You also may want to move virtual machine storage between physical storage devices, at runtime, to take advantage of new, lower cost storage supported in this version of Hyper-V (such as server message block [SMB]-based), or to respond to reduced performance that results from bottlenecks in the storage throughput. Here’s how live storage migration works at a high-level:At the beginning of the move operation, disk reads and writes go to the source virtual hard disk. While reads and writes occur on the source virtual hard disk, the disk contents are copied to the new destination virtual hard disk. After the initial disk copy is complete, disk writes are mirrored to both the source and destination virtual hard disks while outstanding disk changes are replicated. After the source and destination virtual hard disks are completely synchronized, the virtual machine switches over to using the destination virtual hard disk. The source virtual hard disk is deleted.
Access anywhere on any deviceEnables seamless, always-on access to a virtualized work environment from anywhere, including branch locations and public connectivity services. Business users are demanding that they be allowed to bring their consumer devices to work, and IT professionals are looking for ways to provide information access on a whole new set of devices they didn’t need to support previously. With Windows Server 8, centralized desktops and simple-to-deploy remote access and branch location solutions provide an easy way to give users access to corporate infrastructure while maintaining security and compliance.Key features include the following:Remote Access. Windows Server 8 provides an integrated remote access solution that’s simple to deploy. Employees can access corporate network resources while working remotely, and IT administrators can manage corporate computers located outside the internal network. Windows Server 8 accomplishes this by integrating two existing remote access technologies: DirectAccess for automatic, transparent connectivity and traditional VPNs for compatibility.Remote Desktop Services. Since Windows 2000 Server, Remote Desktop Services (formerly known as Terminal Services) has allowed multiple people to concurrently log into a shared server and work in an isolated session. This feature enables you to separate application execution from application presentation and serve many independent user desktops from the same server. This creates a more secure workplace by keeping sensitive data in the data center, makes it possible to use thin clients in PC-unfriendly locations, and permits you to run the latest operating systems on older or less powerful devices. Windows Server 8 simplifies Remote Desktop Services and makes it more cost-effective to deploy and manage VDI and session-based desktops and applications. It also improves the experience for both users and administrators:For users, remote desktops behave more like traditional desktops, whether they connect across the LAN or WAN.For administrators, it’s easier and less expensive to deploy and manage Remote Desktop Services, and features work consistently for both session virtualization and VDI.BranchCache.BranchCache stores a copy of shared content at remote offices to improve branch office data access performance and reduce WAN usage. In Windows Server 8, BranchCache is enterprise-ready with better performance, better management, and increased scale—making it cloud-ready also. BranchCache has a streamlined deployment process and an improved ability to optimize bandwidth over WAN connections between BranchCache-enabled content servers and remote client computers. This functionality lets remote client computers access data and run applications in a more secure, efficient, and scalable way.
