Goodwill Industries is extremely involved in assisting veterans in the transition from the military into civilian life. One project that helps with that transition, involves one of the other first steps a veteran may seek, additional educational opportunities. With the Suit Up for Veterans project (as partnered with Aiken Technical College in Georgia), student veterans can seek out assistance with the necessity of professional dress as interviews and job fairs begin during the transition from veteran to student to civilian employee begins. The program encourages positive behaviors and patterns including a GPA requirement and attendance in a professional lecture series, in addition to the demonstration of need. The school encourages a holistic approach and all students are encouraged to donate to bins on campus. A full bin results in 5 vouchers to be distributed to veteran students who will, in turn, be able to use the vouchers at Goodwill and receive 5 free articles of clothing, meant to be used on professional attire(Harriston, 2014).
The other examples of services offered by Goodwill Industries are aimed at assisting both veterans and their families into civilian life. Veterans Stand Down, based in Southern California, offers assistance such as food, clothes, health services and benefits counseling to veterans and their families to assist through transition which may include challenges such as homelessness, drug addiction, and extended unemployment. The services include access to a variety of those willing to assist including counselors, religious leaders, or other veterans some of whom have been through similar experiences. Additionally, another service offered is exposure to experiences such as yoga and tai chi to assist in wellness and relaxation (Harriston, 2014). Another program is associated with Hiring our Heroes called Goodwill for America’s Heroes and Their Families. This program is a partnership with US Chamber and is aimed at assisting with the transition into the workforce. The services include career based workshops, resume assistance, and mock interviews.
