Our literature study will include class novels, selections from the textbook,
and supplemental readings.
We’ll read poetry, mythology, drama, short story, fiction, and nonfiction.
Participating in discussions, writing short responses, and taking quizzes or tests
are some of the ways you’ll show your understanding of what you read.
Compositions will be worked on in class and at home.
PREWRITING
DRAFTING
REVISION
EDITING
PUBLISHING
are all part of the writing process. Keep ALL prewriting and drafts together
in your binder or digital folder!
Your writer’s notebook is a place for your own freewriting
and for in-class practice. The more you write, the more you
will discover about yourself.
Bring it with you every day! Take it home every day, too,
because you never know when inspiration might strike.
At the end of each nine weeks, your writer’s notebook
will be turned in for a major grade.
You will each have your own blog this year.
You’ll be able to share your thoughts,
comment on each other’s ideas,
and connect with other students
from around the world.
We’ll start blogging in just a couple of weeks!
Headed to high school?
We’ll be studying Vocabulary for the High School Student!
There are four lessons in a unit, followed by a cumulative test.
You’ll have some online tools to help you practice the words
AND help you expand your vocabulary even further!
These skills will be taught through warm-ups, mini-lessons,
and literature study.
Concepts are cumulative, so keep your handouts
all year long in the grammar section of your binder!
Each nine weeks, you’ll set a personal goal for your independent reading.
You’ll choose what to read: any genre, any topic!
At the end of the nine weeks, a reading log will be due
and a new goal will be set for the next nine weeks.
The reading log grade, which counts as a major grade,
will include talking and writing about your reading.
Major Grades 60%
Skills Development 40%
Practice 0%
Homework will either be a skills development grade or a practice grade,
depending on the assignment. The better you use your class time, the less
homework you will have!
Retesting: Any student may retake a test for full credit AFTER scheduling
tutorial time and completing the required remediation work. The student
will earn the higher of the two grades. The same material may not be retested
more than once.
You’ve got to get it done!
If you come to class without your
assignment, you will be expected to
come to a tutoring session to work on
it or turn it in:
MORNING STUDENTS: Come to
lunch in Mrs. Schoch’s room on the
very same day!
AFTERNOON STUDENTS: Come to
morning tutoring in Mrs. Kriese’s room or to
lunch tutoring in Mrs. Schoch’s room on the
next day.
Be respectful.
Be responsible.
Be safe.
Consequences :
• Student warning
• Student/teacher conference and loss of privilege
• Parent notification and possible conference
• Office referral
Bring your charged iPad to class every day.
Your phone should be turned off and put away.
Be respectful, responsible, and safe with your use of technology!
