3. If you work on a construction site,
what you wear to work can make the
difference between life and death.
4. To keep you safe we’ve outlined the
most important pieces or ‘clothing’
you will need when working on site.
5. Heads
Hard hat: a hard hat must be
worn at all times on site. This is to
prevent serious injury from falling
objects.
Goggles: If you’re carrying out
work that runs the risk of a
foreign object entering the eye,
then goggles must be worn.
Shards of glass or wood can
seriously damage vision, OR cause
complete blindness if entering the
eye.
6. Heads…
Ear protectors: when using
loud machinery or plant ear
protection must be worn to
prevent permanent damage to
the ear drum.
Breathing apparatus: If you’re
working in an environment
with high levels of pollution a
mask must be worn to protect
you from inhaling dangerous
chemicals.
7. Shoulders
Hi-vis: whilst working on a
building site, roads or at night, a
high visibility vest must be worn
at all times.
Personal protective equipment
(PPE): if working at height you
are required, by law, to wear a
safety harness. All safety
harnesses must be visually
checked before use to ensure
they are fit for purpose.
8. Shoulders…
Work jacket: if the
materials you’re handling
run the risk of damaging
the skin or breaking the
skins surface a ‘work
jacket’ is required to be
worn, they are generally
extremely thick (and
tough) to prevent sharp
objects piercing through
them.
9. Knees
Work pants: when working on
building sites ‘work pants’ are
mandatory. They’re extremely
thick to ensure when kneeling
down nothing is able to pierce
them.
Knee pads: when working on
floors, where you’re required
to kneel down frequently, knee
pads must be worn, this not
only protects the knees but
provides a certain level of
comfort as well.
10. Toes
Steel toe caps: It is now law on all British building sites that workmen (and
women) must wear ‘rigger’ boots with steel toe caps in. This prevents anything
sharp piercing the boot and limits any damage should an item be dropped on the
foot.
