Open API Consumers’ Team

Consume Understand
                                 Provide
APIs build Consumption
                                 inputs / Ideas
Apps patterns
Promises

• Master the APIs - look at all the tools that
will help us learn the API
• Explore the platforms, explore the
  frameworks. Build APPs*
• Keep an eye on the good content
  providers.
Ground Rules

• ACT - contribute, not just consume!
• Its all about APIs - be crazy about them.
• Its all personal opinion- by default
• Communicate- Ask questions/Answer them
The Agenda
The Agenda

• Make APIs main stream in India
And be a part of it
ITs Kind of fun to do the impossible
                            - Walt Disney

OpenACT - Meet1 - Intro to APIs

Editor's Notes

  1. \n
  2. --\nThere are two main things that drive our society, at large. \nCommerce- The goods and services, their creation, consumption and distribution.\nData - The knowledge or information. \nLets look at our history and see where we have started, and where we have come\n
  3. --\nThis is where goods and services are produced- farms and foundries. \nFrom there there is a complex distribution channel that got created. \nPeople stared selling them in wholesale shops, and then retail shops, where they are packaged properly.\nAnd then came the super markets where more than one type of goods are services are available.\n
  4. --\nNow what we are seeing is, big malls- where you can get everything you want (including of-course some entertainment). What is driving all those advancements? \nConvenience - Buy your groceries, dresses, shoes, googles any many more- all at one place. \nConsumablity - You can compare between different brands- try them. Have all the details in the form you understand.\n

Have all the details in the form you understand.\n
  6. --\nAnd of-course data or how the information is shared. \nThis is my favorite temple- one of the Belur/Halebed temples.\nSo much information sculptured on the walls. Apparently, this is how the people used to learn many things. \n
  7. --\nNow we have many more formats - Books, movies, Magazines. TVs and the masss media - (with breaking news 24x7) Where data is created and shared.\nWhat is driving all this?\nReach - how many people is the data reaching (of-course there is a convenience factor there)\nRelevance - Are you giving the right information for your target audience?\n\n

  10. --\nWhy are we talking about all this? \nBecause - the same two things also drive the digital world, mostly.\nCommerce - Goods and Services\nData - Information; \nCreation, consumption and distribution\n
  11. --\nWhat is the medium in how that is distributed? \nInternet - PCs, Laptops and websites for Commerce and Data.\nOf late, we have Samsung - criticizing uncles. \nAnd Sirji, promoting 3G in heaven.\n\nBut here is the problem, most of these apps are still built by the same providers- they are nothing but mobile version of the website.\n
  12. --\nAnd they are seeing a gap. Here is where it is- \nWebsites, is only one form of consuming data. \nIts not that people haven’t realized other channels of distribution. \nThere are people who give FTP dumps to the strategic partners. Yatra is using IRCTC data- but its complicated SOA. \nPeople all over the world are realizing that Open API is an effective way. \nBTW, Open doesn’t always mean free. \nOpen API also helps because, lets say another channel comes in, like tablets or in-car entertainment, where your data or service can be useful - you can very easily cater to that.\n
  13. --\nAnd here are some stats to prove my points- websites are dead.\nNumber of mobile devices - set to explode. \nAnd the data will be available for many many many people, and most of them will through mobile devices. \nAnd then, the number of phones- or companies building them?\nI thought I will also try and gather the number of phones in the market. But samsung alone does some 2000 phones. \nDoesn’t end there - what do you say about the tablets? \nSo, for providers who want to take their goods&services and/or Data to the next level, Open APIs is the best, if not the only option.\nIn India, a few people have done that, few are thinking about it, and many more will do it eventually.\n

  34. --\nSo here we are where there is an interesting and hot, very hot thing in the market - the APIs. That is why we are here today. \nTwitter, Linked In, Google Maps and many more. That you can start using it right away.\nNow, there are developers - like you and me. Curious to embrace The Next Big thing. \nWhat do they do? They learn the API. BUT you need right tools to learn them. One of the things we will do is look at the tools.\nBut why learn the API - or even interesting question, why API? Because there are some cool platforms out there, like iOS, Android. Did any one not hear about them? \nBut what you might not have heard is how do these developers build - what is called as apps on these platforms. They use frameworks. So here is the next promise from the community- Learn about the platforms and the frameworks. We don’t want any one of us to miss out on the opportunity.\nThis will only get interesting if we see some more content providers expose APIs - here are some examples.\nAnd there are more of these platforms that surface every now and then.\nWhat will you do if you are not afraid? What will you do if you know all the APIs and how to use them. What will you do, if you know the right frameworks to build apps on these frameworks?\nAnd then we begin. The aim of the community is not to end when we know everything. It is to begin - begin un-leashing the innovation once we know the right stuff -right tools, right frameworks, right APIs, right Platforms.\n

The aim of the community is not to end when we know everything. It is to begin - begin un-leashing the innovation once we know the right stuff -right tools, right frameworks, right APIs, right Platforms.\n
