Christopher Columbus As A Hero
"A hero. You want to be one of those rare human beings who make history, rather than merely watch
it flow around them like water around a rock." Dan Simmons wanted to reflect on the many notable
historical figures in our past who were recognized for their courageous traits, leadership ingenuity,
and outstanding discoveries that sparked from one individual who was willing to make a change.
Christopher Columbus precisely fits the depicted portrait of a hero. Through any given perspective
from Europeans during that epoch to our world five centuries later, we see that Columbus was the
epitome of the valiant figure, invoking change for the revitalization of Europe and South America as
a whole, and igniting the exploration age and philosophical ideas through his heroic actions.
During the fifteenth century, Columbus pioneered the paradigm shift in that sailing into the western
water was not dangerous, emphasizing his bravery and deterministic attitude. "If a culture is to live,
it changes, it always changes. If a people live, they imagine themselves always and in a new sense."
The significance behind it underlines Columbus as an opportunist because scholars during that time
thought about the likelihood of reaching Asia by sailing westward. Despite these claims, he was the
only man who stepped out of a small batch of naval explorers to actually initiate his plan into action.
Europe took centuries to start recognizing the impact from Renaissance thinkers, Columbus led a

The Christopher Columbus
Little may one know about Christopher Columbus, other than the fact that "Columbus sailed the
ocean blue in 1492". Even though he was claimed to have discovered the Americas, he was never
the first to arrive there because (according to historians) the Vikings were there first. But, his
discovery led other people in Europe know about the Americas therefore changing the world.
Columbus shaped the world as we know it today. Columbus was born around 1451 in the republic of
Genoa (what today would be in Italy). As a teenager, he participated in some trading voyages in the
Mediterranean and Aegean seas for a job to earn some money. When Columbus was young, voyages
had always fascinated him so he decided to start sailing the seas, hoping he could discover
something new. His first voyage to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly killed him when a group of
French privateers attacked Columbus and his crew off the coast of Portugal. So Columbus had to
swim all the way to Lisbon where he settled and married Felipa Perestrello. They had a son named
Diego in about the year 1480. Columbus' wife died soon after Columbus went to Spain and then had
a second son Fernando who was born out of Wedlock in 1488 with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana.
Columbus studied Mathematics, Astronomy, Cartography, and Navigation at Lisbon which is where
Columbus would start his quest to finding a new world. On his mission to discover a new world, he
took his plan first to a Portuguese king for a three ship voyage,

Christopher Columbus : The Success Of Christopher Columbus
One of the most impactful voyages in our history, lead by Christopher Columbus, almost did not
happen due to the lack of funding. This trip, intended to find a western route to India, was actually
the beginning of European interest in the "New World" of the Americas. Columbus traveled to
countries such as Portugal and England looking to find a sponsor, but ultimately failed. He managed
to reach King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the couple known to eventually take part in
this proposal and put forth the money. Regardless of the likely persuasive Columbus, it is quite
surprising that the King and Queen of Spain decided to fund the ideas of a foreign and unknown
sailor. It was likely Columbus's navigational knowledge, Ferdinand and Isabella's want for power,
and the possible benefits of the voyage were the things that influenced the couples thinking towards
accepting the offer. These reasons are likely the reason of the occurrence of the journey.
Columbus had a background in navigation before he came to Spain looking for money. Even as a
young teenager, he led a lifestyle of ships and sailing. Being born in Genoa, Italy, he soon held a job
on a ship as a merchant that sailed along the Portuguese coasts. He had experience in the water and
knew the fundamentals of leading a large fleet. This allowed him to have more power in persuading
Ferdinand and Isabella to fund his idea. Also, he studied navigation along with geometry, calculus,
and astronomy. Knowledge and skill

The Voyage of Christopher Columbus
American History I 07/08/05 Christopher Columbus' Voyage to North America Spanish exploration
first began with a series of revolutions. First, the Commercial Revolution generated economic
stability. Second, the Intellectual Revolution generated interest in the Earth's composition and the
pursuit of exploration. Europe then called for a political revolution to end the disorganized and
disorderly rule of its government. This revolution returned order and stability to the government and
renewed interest in exploration to search for national wealth. The last of these revolutions was the
religious revolution (note Columbus' voyage occurred before this revolution). As more people broke
away from the national religion they searched for a place ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Afterwards, Columbus then went to Lisbon, Spain a year later where he would propose the voyage
to King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. When Columbus made a friend in
Father Perez, it was a turning point for him. He was able to gain support from converts who believed
in his cause. Ferdinand and Isabella were harder to convince, however. They found little interest in
Columbus' curiosity as they were preoccupied with defending themselves against the Moors. Later
in 1491, Columbus again appears before Ferdinand and Isabella "who apparently liked and
respected the determined seaman" (38) 1. Although they had admiration for Columbus, his plans for
voyage were again rejected, partially because of his request to titles and riches. It seems that
Columbus gave but scant and unsatisfactory information to the commission, probably through fear
that his ideas might be improperly made use of and he be robbed of the glory and advantages that he
expected to derive from his project (2) 2. But Columbus was not yet discouraged, for "he was a
gentleman of great force and spirit naturally inclined to undertake worthy deeds and signal
enterprises " (21) 3. 1492 was a successful year for the Spanish. On January 2, Grenada
surrendered which freed Spain of the foreign power that occupied the city for seven centuries (35) 1.
When Columbus was asked to march in the parade at Grenada he took it as an opportunity to
propose his voyage for a third time and

Christopher Columbus Failure
Christopher Columbus,a historical explorer, made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain.
Christopher Columbus was born in the year 1451 in the Republic of Genoa. However, in his 20s, he
decided to move to Lisbon, Portugal. Christopher Columbus wanted to explore westward to seek
new and different goods. He also believed that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean was the
shortest water route to Asia. Christopher Columbus had magnificent navigation and survival skills.
He was also very well educated and intelligent. Christopher Columbus formed a proposal to present
to countries to get them to pay for his westward voyage. Since Christopher Columbus was in
Portugal, he strived to get their support. However, he failed to gain support from the Portuguese for
his westward exploration. Due to this failure, Christopher Columbus moved away to Spain. Spain
had much lesser power than Portugal. Nevertheless, the Spanish Monarchs, which were King
Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, politely accepted Christopher Columbus' proposal for westward
exploration. In 1492, the country of Granada had fallen to the extortion of the Spanish. This allowed
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to focus their attention on westward exploration. Thus, allowing
Christopher Columbus to begin his first voyage. However, Christopher Columbus had to promise to
expand the Christian faith to the people of the new world and return with silver, gold, and spices. By
promising to do so, Christopher Columbus was

Disadvantages Of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was an explorer, navigator, and survivalist who was born and raised in Italy
as the eldest son to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa. Columbus went on many
explorations, but his most famous was his exploration to the new world. For this exploration
Columbus managed to convince the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella, to
hire an Italian explorer to work for the Spanish government. There are many advantages and
disadvantages to hiring an explorer from a different country. These advantages and disadvantages
Christopher Columbus used to convince the king and queen that it was a good idea for them to send
Columbus instead of a spaniard. Christopher Columbus, being Italian, was a good choice ... Show

The names of his ships for the voyage were La Pinta meaning "the prostitute", Santa Clara
nicknamed the Niña After the owner of the ship (Juan Niño), and the Santa Maria. Unfortunately,
the Santa Maria crashed on the first voyage and Columbus had to ride back to Spain aboard the
Niña.
The voyages Christopher Columbus took to the New World in the late 1400s and early 1500s were
supposed to find a different trade route to India. Spain had a large interest in trading with India, so
Columbus was going to be an enormous help to the country. Columbus believed that there was a
shorter route to reach the goal of India. Columbus was a believer in the fact that the world is round,
and he thought that if you went across the Atlantic Ocean you would find a direct water way to Asia.
Even though Columbus believed the world was round, he still did not know how large the world was
and underestimated the size. Instead of landing in India, Columbus landed upon the Americas.
Columbus, at the time, did not realize that he did not make it to India, so when he saw the Native
Americans, he called them Indians. Columbus, even though he did not make it to India, still brought
information to Spain. Spain, at the time of the voyage was not a very rich country compared to the
other powers of the world and by

Christopher Columbus Hero
Christopher Columbus Many know Christopher Columbus as the man who discovered America, but
there's more to Columbus than that. He lived as a man so idealistic that reality became a blur, a man
who explored in the name of God, and a man who wanted more than he could earn. However, he
died over five hundred years ago, so who can really say who he was? That didn't stop writers or
historians though.
Born in 1837, Joaquin Miller took a try in writing of Columbus's true nature. In Miller's poem
"Columbus", Columbus and his crew cross the sea in a voyage for land. The reader can assume this
expedition started out ardous because his ¨men grow mutinous day by day¨ and his ¨men grow
ghastly wan and weak¨ during this voyage (Miller, 9 and 10). Still determined to find land,
Columbus insists that his crew ¨Sail on! sail on! and on!¨ (Miller, 16). Ultimately though,
Columbus's persistence comes across as obsessive when he puts his life and his crew's lives in
danger: "Why, now not even God would know / Should I and all my men fall dead." (Miller, 19 and
20). He fails to feel intimidated by the unfamiliar seas because he focuses too much on his ideal
future of finding riches. Miller sees this as a valuable leadership quality to power through tough
times: "He gained a world; he gave that world / Its grandest lesson: "On! sail on!" (Miller, 39 and
40). But, to keep sailing with lives at stake made for an extremely dangerous risk. At first glance,
this source does not seem reliable because its author, Joaquin Miller never sailed on any of
Columbus's voyages. Although, Miller being born hundreds of years after Columbus died have its
advantages. Because Miller wrote this poem long after the explorer´s death, he could've used a
variety of resources. Columbus´s own journals, historian's studies, and even accounts from his own
crew. After further analyzation of "Columbus", in the end, Columbus took risks to get what he
wanted, making him a good leader. Although, he only got lucky enough not to suffer tragedy at sea
and to find land before a great demise.
Similarly to Miller, another poet, Walt Whitman, also saw Christopher Columbus as a good explorer.
In his poem "Prayer of Columbus", Whitman depicts Columbus near the end of

Compare And Contrast Christopher Columbus And Christopher...
Throughout recorded human history, authors, leaders, and researchers, have documented the past
from many different perspectives, and viewpoints. Not every historian has the same stance on a
certain issue, therefore, differences in point of view occur in almost every writing. In the textbook
The American Pageant, A People's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart, and Michael
Allen, and Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, the reader can see many different
perspectives throughout each reading. The infamous explorer known as Christopher Columbus, has
been documented in many different ways. Depending on the reading, Columbus has be called
everything from a "[...]symbol of the new age of hope", to an inhuman tyrant who captured Indians
and turned them into slaves.
In the well known textbook, The American Pageant, the reader learns about straightforward facts
and events regarding Christopher Columbus. Although the textbook provides the audience with
good information, it struggles to go into great detail or depth surrounding Columbus and his voyages
in comparison to the two other sources. I believe the authors did a good job avoiding anything
controversial, by only including facts and referring to Columbus as a "successful failure" instead of
a hero or barbarian. The book didn't carry much detail and wasn't that "juicy" of a source, but
fulfilled it's job as a history textbook. The document I choose to include was a map of Columbus'
voyages. The map

Christopher Columbus Summary
Christopher Columbus wrote this letter in the hopes of outlining his discoveries to Queen Isabella
and King Ferdinand. They along with other backers helped him in his pursuit of finding a quicker
route to the Chinese trade markets. Columbus wanted many things from his voyage, fame and
fortune being the front runners. The King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella wanted the the fame and
fortune like Columbus, and also the ability to bring their religion to many lands all over the globe.
His crew set sail from Spain in the three well known ships listed as the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria.
Columbus sailed from new island to new island for many months on end, in what we now know as
the modern day Caribbean. Christopher Columbus's efforts were groundbreaking, and his letter
served to further his efforts of another voyage by showcasing his success of discovering the Indies,
routes, the people, and their natural resources. The promise of new trade routes, silver, spices, silk,
and other merchandise were replaced with his belief he "conquered" new islands, set up a colony,
and brought back a small supply of gold and slaves.
The letter written by Christopher Columbus in 1493, he explains that they traveled and arrived at the
islands of the Indies to begin with. Once there Colombus details that the islands are being populated
by Indians. He then describes how he gave new names for each of the islands that he sailed. In the
letter he believes Juana is actually part of the mainland of China.

Christopher Columbus Nocturnal
Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean; one in
1492, one in 1493, another in 1498, and his last in 1502. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of
Aragon and Castille approved his first voyage to the new world in 1492. Originally, Christopher
Columbus thought that he could find a shorter, much easier passage to India from Spain by cutting
across the Atlantic Ocean. He first landed in modern day Watling Island, Bahamas. He met natives
that lived there and thought he was in India, so he called them Indians. This is why we called Native
Americans Indians. Columbus used many different devices to assist him on his voyages to the
Americas in his four trips across the Atlantic Ocean, such as a nocturnal, ... Show more content on

Modern technology would have made his voyage quicker, easier, and possibly with less death and
destruction. Columbus may have gone down as a hero in the history books with modern technology,
yet he went down as just another explorer who discovered and killed. Technology has expanded
greatly over the years, and will continue to expand with new ideas and new inventions everyday.
The voyage of Christopher Columbus was long, hard, and treacherous with the technology that was
used. With modern day technology this voyage would have been simpler, faster, and less
troublesome for

The Morality Of Christopher Columbus
When growing up kids are taught the rhyme that tells us Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean
blue in 1492 and told that he discovered America. This is not actually true. We celebrate a federal
holiday every October for a man who did not even discover our country and harmed the people that
inhabited it. As time goes on historians have proceeded to learn and write more about the real life of
Christopher Columbus and how what we learned as kids isn't all the truth. When they did this the
controversy that has come up is over whether there is validity of honoring this explorer as a hero and
if it's true that he was the founder. There has been a lot of proof of all the damage that was created
by Columbus and his crews, this has lead to an uproar over how much emphasis is placed upon
studying and celebrating him in schools and public celebrations.
He was one of many European explorers, but just like them Christopher Columbus encountered
indigenous people throughout his voyages. He was primarily focused on his mission to find riches
and conquer new lands, "Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the
same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe" (Christopher
Columbus). Columbus and his teams handled the indigenous groups they came across like they were
obstacles in the way of their greater mission.
There are three huge sources of controversy involving Columbus's interactions with the indigenous
people he called "Indians". These people he called Indians weren't actually Indians at all, he thought
he had arrived in India and that is where he came up with this term and why Native Americans are
wrongly called Indians. Columbus brought the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of
native peoples to Christianity, and the introduction of a host of new diseases that would impact the
lives of the natives and have long–term effects on them.
During the time when the international slave trade was starting to grow larger. Columbus and his
men enslaved many of the native inhabitants of the West Indies and exposed them to extreme
violence. He even sent them as a gift to Queen Isabella, "In lieu of the material riches he had
promised the Spanish monarchs, he

Christopher Columbus Fault
Many around the world always picture Christopher Columbus as a man who did great things for
what America is today. Is that all really true? As kids, we have all, been taught that Columbus was
the man who discovered America but in reality that is all a lie. Christopher Columbus was a man
that made a mistake that started many issues that is still around today. Some of many things
Columbus did was: he started the slave trade, he treated the Native Americans poorly, kidnapped the
Tainos, and stole gold and many other items of value. Even though he did a lot of bad things not
everything that Columbus did was terrible. I feel that though many things that are wrong today are
his fault at the end of the day he still made America known in Europe. Christopher Columbus is a
man that causes a lot of controversies but it makes a person think that was all he did worth the
outcome. Bringing light to what Christopher Columbus does helps to acknowledge his legacy and
what he left behind. One of the main issues that arose because of Columbus that stuck with me is
him starting the slave trade. The slave trade was a huge thing back in the day that cost many people
their lives. Many family and friends were ripped from their homes so they could be auctioned off to
someone who would beat them for not doing the work. Many people that were involved in the slave
trade never had to work in those sorts of conditions and they could not handle it. Another issue that
occurred is the spread of

Essay on Christopher Columbus
America's national memory is filled with icons and symbols, avatars of deeply held, yet imperfectly
understood, beliefs. The role of history in the iconography of the United States is pervasive, yet the
facts behind the fiction are somehow lost in an amorphous haze of patriotism and perceived national
identity. Christopher Columbus, as a hero and symbol of the first order in America, is an important
figure in this pantheon of American myth. His status, not unlike most American icons, is
representative not of his own accomplishments, but the self–perception of the society which raised
him to his pedestal in the American gallery of heroism.
This gallery was not in place at the birth of the political nation. America, as a young republic, ...

Americans, searching for a history and a hero, discovered Columbus. A rash of poetic histories and
references to Columbus emerge in the years following the Revolution: Philip Freneau's The Pictures
of Columbus, Joel Barlow's 1787 The Vision of Columbus, and Phillis Wheatley's 1775 innovation,
the poetic device "Columbia" as a symbol of both Columbus and America. King's College of New
York changed its name in 1792 to Columbia, and the new capitol in Washington was subtitled
District of Columbia, in deference to those who would name the country after Columbus. Noble
observes that,
It is not hard to understand the appeal of Columbus as a totem for the new republic and the former
subjects of George III. Columbus had found the way of escape from Old World tyranny. He was the
solitary individual who challenged the unknown sea, as triumphant Americans contemplated the
dangers and promise of their own wilderness frontier...as a consequence of his vision and audacity,
there was now a land free from kings, a vast continent for new beginnings. In Columbus the new
nation without its own history and mythology found a hero from the distant past, one seemingly free
of any taint from association with European colonial powers. The Columbus symbolism gave
America an instant mythology and a unique place in history, and their adoption of Columbus

The Importance Of Christopher Columbus
Have you ever wondered how the land you live on was discovered? Explorers have wandered the
face of the Earth since the beginning of time, claiming their territories, deepening their roots,
expanding their borders, and securing their land. Humans have explored the most distant parts of the
world and are still discovering new territories as we explore our universe and space. The desire to
discover is rooted in all of us whether it is for fame, fortunes, or for satisfying curiosity. As a result,
great explorers have discovered and destroyed cultures, civilizations, and they have introduced
opportunities and new ideas. Many explorers share certain traits and characteristics that make them

Columbus left his father's business to join a sailing expedition which ended in a shipwreck near
Portugal. He decided to stay in Portugal with his brother and started a family. After his wife died, he
was interested in helping his country find a faster way to Asia without paying the Muslim Empire
taxes. Since Columbus had read and heard that Asia could be reached by sailing west, he wanted to
attempt this expedition and fulfill his dream of going to China. After seven years of not being able to
find support for his exploration, he was finally lucky enough to get support from King Ferdinand
and Queen Isabella of Spain. Christopher persevered and was willing to risk his life in order to gain
fame, fortune, and fulfill his dream. Christopher was given 87 men and three ships, the Nina, the
Pinta, and the Santa Maria, which left in August 1492. Christopher headed west into the Atlantic
Ocean, as he had understood that the world was round (but much smaller with his wrong
calculations) and that China was on the same latitude as Portugal. On October 12th, Columbus' crew
finally spotted land, which was an island in the Caribbean, and called it "San Salvador". He visited
many nearby islands, including Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic). Since
Christopher thought that he had landed in India, he called the natives "Indians" which is still
incorrectly used today. Columbus quickly

Christopher Columbus : The Historical Impact Of...
Christopher Columbus was a determined Italian explorer who set out to prove that other
geographical regions other than Europe existed. He was a great navigator, and his conquest in the
high Atlantic sea landed him in the Americas where he discovered the most beautiful lands he had
ever seen. Christopher Columbus made four legendary voyages to America, and he is credited for
opening up America for exploration and exploitation by other European explorers and settlers. This
essay analyzes the journal of the first voyage of Columbus and incorporates contextual elements
related to his life, cultural history, and larger historical impact in America.
The journal of the first voyage of Columbus indicates that Christopher Columbus made his first
journey in 1492 with the blessings of the then King and Queen of Spain (American Journeys, 89).
By making an account of day to day activities and encounters during his voyage, Columbus was
clearly not only navigating to fulfill his ambitions but those of the rulers of Spain as well. The
journal begins by documenting the war between Spain and the Moors and how Spain had emerged
victorious. In this victorious spirit, the King and Queen of Spain perceived as beneficial to support
Columbus in his expedition of the oceans to find and conquer more lands. Spain would be known to
other continents and recognized as a world power. As Bartosik–Vélez put it, Columbus conquered
the New World for Spain (Bartosik–Vélez, 2). Moreover, it would only be practical that the wealth
and riches conquered by Columbus would compensate the loss from the previous war and make
Spain a wealthier nation. In addition to material wealth, Spain hoped to spread its religion to masses
around the world. Columbus was himself a staunch Catholic Christian, the religion that the people
of Spain were expected to pledge allegiance to. In the journal of the first voyage, individuals
claiming faith in other religions including Muslims and Jews had been banished (American
Journeys, 90). Columbus boasts of love for the Christian faith and the call for its propagation.
The tone of the text shows that Christopher Columbus was enthusiastic and determined to claim the
New World for his King and Queen as well as gain a

The Dangers Of Christopher Columbus
We all have heard the saying the saying, "Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492."
Christopher Columbus is the man who discovered the Americas on accident. It was never Columbus'
intention to find the Americas; his focus was to find a water route from Europe to Asia.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. As a teenager, Columbus would work on a
merchant ship. One day, while working on the ship, the ship is attacked. The ship sinks, but
Columbus survives. Columbus is going to find safety in Lisbon. He will start to develop his master
plan in Lisbon. As I stated earlier, Columbus wanted to this voyage because he was trying to find a
trade route between Europe and Asia. All the explorers at that time were eager to explore the far
East, but needed a better and effective way because taking the land was too difficult. There were
tons of riches, such as gold, silver, and spices in the East that everyone wanted a piece of. So, most
of the Portuguese explorers decide to sail around the African continent, but Columbus believes there
is an easier route.
Columbus suggested that he could travel west across the Atlantic Ocean which was a good idea.
However, he had a hard time trying to convince everyone of this idea because his mathematical
calculations are incorrect. Columbus argued that the circumference of the Earth was much smaller
than everybody else thought it was. Nola Taylor Redd states, "A man of convictions, Christopher
Columbus used his strong

Christopher Columbus Technology
Technology's Impact on the Voyage of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus, an Italian
sailor, voyaged the Atlantic ocean and discovered for himself the "New World" in 1492. The three
ships Columbus sailed on are named the Pinta, the Santa Maria, and the Nina. Although Christopher
Columbus is Italian, he carried out his work for Spaniards. Columbus used many forms of
navigation including the system of dead reckoning, a magnetic compass, a nocturnal, and a sand
glass. However, much of the technology sailors use in today's time, such as an Electronic Chart
Display Information System (ECDIS), a gyro compass, and a clock, would have given better
assistance to Columbus in order to navigate his location. Therefore, those technologies and tools
sailors put to use in today, would have been most beneficial to Christopher Columbus before he
died. Columbus had access to a limited range of techniques to voyage across the ocean. One of
which includes a system called dead reckoning. This is a process that sailors during the 1400s used
in order to find their position while sailing by measuring the course and ... Show more content on

One of these tools include a gyro compass. This is a compass that does not require a magnetic field
on the exterior like the one Christopher Columbus used. The gyro compass is based on a fast–
spinning disc and the rotation of the Earth to automatically locate geographical direction. If
Columbus were to use a gyro compass, the local magnetic fields would not have interfered with the
compass. This tool gives a more accurate determination of the location of a person or in this case not
only a person, but a ship too. This form of a compass uses a gyroscope, to keep the compass'
spinning disc level and balanced in turbulent, or rough, environments. If one were to enter a storm
while sailing the gyro compass would stay level enough to direct the voyager out of the

The poem was about when Christopher Columbus went traveling to different islands through the day

The purpose was to prove people that he was a very good, brave, and a bright man for traveling and
finding treasure for his people. The point of view in this poem or document is that Christopher was a
brave and a kind man. This point of view is different from the others because this shows that it's a

The Journey Columbus By Christopher Columbus
The Journey Columbus's Finding Developed Through the Uncovering of San Salvador in 1492
Christopher Columbus's adventitious finding of San Salvador led to the initial European "discovery"
of the New World. Columbus, an Italian explorer, attempted to sail west from Spain to India, funded
by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile (Christopher Columbus's
Exploration). He sailed west using three boats: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria (Christopher
Columbus the Italian Explorer). They reached the island of Guanahani in the Bahamas, but were
unaware that they had landed in the Americas (Christopher Columbus the Italian Explorer).

Columbus was the captain of the Santa Maria, Vicente Yanez Pinzon was the captain of the Niña,
which was the smallest and Columbus's most favorite ship, and Martin Alonso Pinzon was the
captain of the Pinta (Columbus and the Brothers Pinzon). After sailing more than three thousand
miles, they finally reached Guanahani on October 12, 1492, after thirty–six days of sailing west
(Dyson 164). As soon as they landed, Columbus claimed the land for Spain, and named it San
Salvador which means Holy Spirit, acknowledging that God's guidance and will led them to the
Indies (Christopher Columbus the Italian Explorer). Also at this time, the Tainos greeted them
kindly, and some even swam miles offshore to meet them as they were approaching (Dyson 162).
The Tainos believed that the newcomers came from the heavens after seeing their clothing,
weaponry, and boats, and as it was their custom, they treated the strangers with the utmost respect
and with friendliness (Dyson 162). The natives gave the travelers food, water, and gifts to exhibit
their peacefulness and camaraderie. Columbus perceived their hospitality, and began trading with
them which the Tainos recognized as the principle of reciprocity (Wadsworth Cengage Learning 5).
They believed that the travelers were trading to exchange ideas and goods to further advance their
own society, and not to accumulate profit or power at the natives expense (Wadsworth Cengage

Essay on Christopher Columbus
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. But should America really celebrate Christopher
Columbus? Was he really responsible for finding America or was he just simply lucky? The real
question is, should the American people praise a man who had killed many innocent people?
Though Columbus Day is celebrated no one really knows for what reasons. Most Americans just
enjoy their day off. Would they celebrate Columbus Day if they really knew the facts?
Christopher Columbus was an explorer funded by the Spanish king and Queen to find other lands,
gold, goods, and other beings. As he was sent on his journey he stumbled upon a country in what is
know today as America. At this time there on this mysterious land lived the Arawak Indians living in

He made all of them– and some other slaves he already had upon his ship given to him by the king
of Spain– look for gold that he himself could have and gold and goods that he could bring back with
him.. Every slave who had in fact found him gold and goods would get a gold coin around their
necks, if anyone whom in which did not have a gold coin hanging would be killed because they did
not service him. Columbus called this land his and not only did he make the natives of the land his
slaves but he also raped the women and he also brought the natives back to his land to sell them as
slaves.
Now what are Americans really celebrating him for? Most people are naïve to Columbus but they
really don't care or question it they just simply get a day off of work or school. It is a representation
of an interpretation that passes for an explanation.
Columbus day is celebrated for giving the American people an opportunity to come and live on this
land, for Columbus informed England of the "Golden Land" and there they sent their people to
America and others started to migrate there because they thought that gold was falling from the sky
and then the American people were born. Granted if he did not fall onto America maybe things
would be different but all in all he was a selfish man, a man who only cared about his country and
his alliances not for the natives in which he

Christopher Columbus Flaws
Captain hook and Christopher Columbus share many character traits, most of which are flawed and
lead to the demise of their powerful position. First and foremost, both were powerful, determined
captains. Columbus's determination can be found in his journal entries, Columbus wrote "...I am
determined to proceed onward and ascertain whether I can reach Cipango." This quote, along with
many other examples can be found throughout his journal entries. This excerpt also leads to the next
character flaw of Columbus; greed. According to Dina Gilio–Whitaker, on thoughtco.com, to find
the gold he sought out for Columbus enslaved the Arawak people, "the Arawaks were forced under
the encomienda system (a system of forced labor that sidestepped the word "slavery") ... Show more

As for Captain Hook, most of his character flaws were centered around Tick–Tock the crocodile,
who swallowed his hand and has been following him ever since in an attempt to devour the rest of
Hook. In Peter Pan (2003) Hook's fear of Tick–Tock is nearly inescapable and haunts him
throughout the movie, reappearing each time he fails to kill Peter Pan. Comparable Christopher
Columbus's has an evident fear of the Spanish monarchy halting his voyages, leading him to lie and
stall in his entries when he mentions his search for gold. Columbus even goes far enough to contain
an entire filler paragraph to make himself appear productive in his voyage to discover riches,
although all he has found is inhabited islands. Furthermore, Hook holds a deep–rooted rage against
Peter and becomes enraged and frustrated when he finds out that his attempts to kill peter were
unsuccessful and Peter is in fact, alive and well. This anger and frustration mirrors that of Columbus
when a group of Arawak people refused to trade with Columbus and his men, "At one part of the
island he got into a fight with Indians who refused to trade as many bows and arrows as he and his

Christopher Columbus Letter
Christopher Columbus's life was filled with adventures and new beginnings that would leave a
remarkable impression throughout history. Born in 1451 in Genoa, Columbus from an early age
would become well acclimated to sailing as he began his career aboard a merchant ship and later
study mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation. Growing up and experiencing new
thing Columbus began to come up with a plan different from all others to set sail across the Atlantic
instead of going around the African continent. With his ideas being turned away from both Portugal
and England it was Ferdinand and Isabella who took sympathy upon him and financial back his
voyage as they both had hopes of gaining fame and fortune. In 1942, Columbus began his voyages
and would carefully document each experience in the form of letters that would have a lasting
impact on the world. I believe with the dramatic change in tones we see between the first and fourth
letters it gives us the reader a true insight into Columbus's mental and physical emotions over the
years. Furthermore, these letters allow us to explore a part of history that is considered monumental
while gaining information of what took place over a ten–year journey.
Christopher Columbus's successful voyage and discoveries are shown in great details throughout his
First Letter to Luis De Sant Angel. Throughout this letter, we see from Columbus's word choices the
accomplishments he achieved through statements made such as "You will

Christopher Columbus Motives
Christopher Columbus is an Italian Explorer who had convinced King Ferdinand, the Second and
Queen Isabella the First to fund a voyage to Asia to establish trade with China, Japan, India, and the
Spice Islands to get valuable spices and silks. Spain went with a foreign explorer because of his
benefits over the local explorers. To see what these people's motives are and what they want I will
do a background check for the King, the Queen, and Columbus. I'll also go through why the King
and Queen went with Christopher Columbus's pitch for his voyage. This will shed more light on
why King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella chose Columbus.
Columbus had been born in the Republic of Genoa in 1451. Columbus had first gone to sea and was
in charge of helping with smaller trading trips throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. One
voyage in the Atlantic in 1476 almost cost Columbus his life. The ship he was on got burned down
and Columbus had to swim back to Portugal. He eventually moved to Spain after having two wives
and two children. Columbus went on many expeditions to Africa and gained knowledge on wave
currents. Columbus started studying the Asian islands close to India and China because he had heard
of their supposed wealth from other Europeans, he also was curious about the Canary Islands.
Columbus began to propose his idea of a three ship voyage across the Atlantic to the Portuguese
King, Genoa, and Venice. Columbus requested the Spanish King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella

The New Light
The federal holiday, Columbus Day, has brought about its own uniqueness amongst many
Americans. Generations of schoolchildren were instructed to read or watch videos that claimed
Columbus was the founder of America. He was known as an explorer, navigator, and a colonizer.
Now, Christopher Columbus is no longer portrayed as the hero he once was. Over many years, there
has been a series of stories told by others, and a proof of documentation found to reveal information
about his life, famous voyages, and the multicultural movement.
The birthday of Christopher Columbus remains unknown to this day. He was presumed born
between August 26 and October 31, 1451, in Genoa, Italy (Flint). In his thirties, when his ship was
wrecked, he managed to grab a wooden oar and reach the shore in Portugal (Cavendish). He
returned to Spain in 1504 after his last voyage (Cavendish). Columbus had been arrested years prior
to accusations of tyranny and brutality toward native peoples of the Americas. But he was released
by King Ferdinand after six weeks in prison. He was subsequently denied most of the profits of his
discoveries promised to him by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (Wanjek). Columbus was fifty–three
and in deprived well–being. He was living comfortably, economically speaking, in an apartment in
Valladolid, Crown of Castile, in present–day Spain, albeit in pain from severe arthritis (Wanjek). He
is now suspected to

Christopher Columbus And The Columbus
Christopher Columbus
"In fourteen hundred ninety–two / Columbus sailed the ocean blue." In grade school, I was taught
this rhyme to learn about Christopher Columbus. Most of what I learned about Christopher
Columbus then, was that he thought the world was round (and others didn't); and that he wanted to
sail to India, but messed up, and landed in America, calling the natives "Indians." As I grew older, I
learned a little bit more about Columbus's trips to the Americas. I was told that Christopher
Columbus wasn't as nice of a person as I was taught when I was younger. I learned that Columbus'
heart was set on acquiring as much gold from the natives as possible. He turned them into slaves and
brought diseases with him–from which whole tribes died off. While I was surprised to hear about
these unfortunate actions, I was more surprised that I had never heard about them. At first, I was
hesitant to believe these stories, but as we learned more about his travels, the stories seemed to be
more realistic, and true. However, when I was able to read the extracts from Christopher Columbus'
journal, I was able to better piece together the type of man Christopher Columbus was. Christopher
Columbus was a leader, explorer, adventurer, thinker, and doer. Although he was rejected multiple
times whilst trying to get the funds necessary to travel to India, he did not give up and continued to
seek the approval of the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies. Eventually, when Queen Isabella was

Christopher Columbus Contributions
There are countless influential figures in the history of our world, even in just one country there are
so many to consider. From politicians to military leaders, from artists to scientists, and from
explorers to revolutionaries, our world has evolved in the way it is lead, lived in, and organized as
well as how we think and the endless possibilities that go along with that. With this being said I
believe that Christopher Columbus was the most influential figure in world history (or at least in the
time which we studied) due to effects on culture, geography, and world view.
Christopher Columbus is perhaps the most well known explorer of all time, for his discovery of The
Americas, which he referred to as "the Indies." This discovery was not deliberate, however, as his
intention was to find a more efficient way of travelling to Asia, to obtain spices, by sailing west.
This goal was obstructed however, due to the entire continent of what is now known as North
America being in the way. Columbus was not aware of this mistake though, and believed that he
was, in fact, in the continent of Asia. This place was not the Indies, and the people who were there
were not Indians, the world later discovered, however this did not correct the false idea put in place.
Despite these people being Native Americans who were living in their homeland, for hundreds
succeeding this discovery, even to this day, people had and are incorrectly claiming that they are
"Indians, which is false, ignorant,

Christopher Columbus Report
Christopher Columbus was born in the port city of Genoa, Italy in 1451. His father
was a wool weaver named Domenico Columbo. As a boy, Christopher had no schooling. He
and his younger brother Bartholomew helped their father by carding raw wool. Christopher
grew up to be a tall, red–haired, quiet and deeply religious man. He worked for his father until
he was 22. He went out with the sardine fishing fleets, as other Genoese boys did and he sailed
along the coast to Corsica on business for his father. Genoese traders had their own schooners as did
Christopher Columbus' father. He made at least one trip to the North African coast. On
long trips such as these, Christopher learned the elements of seamanship. ... Show more content on

rank enabled Columbus to meet important officials. She also gave him her father's collection of
charts and documents. From these Columbus gained more knowledge of Portuguese discoveries and
plans. In 1481, he entered the service of King John II of Portugal and voyaged to the gold
coasts of Africa.
During that time the wealth of Asia was being discovered and Europeans were eager for more of it.
Asian goods had to be brought over to Europe through a perilous overland route
which made them scarce and expensive. Ships could carry the good more cheaply and with
greater quantity. To reach India, China, Japan and the East Indies the Portuguese were trying to
make a route that stretched all around the coast of Africa for trading. Another possibility was
across the Atlantic Ocean. At the time all educated men knew that the world was round and that
Asia was west of Europe. But, no one knew how far it was.
Columbus' studies lead him to believe that the Earth was much smaller than it really was so Asia
was a lot farther than he thought. He made his calculations based on evidence from
sources such as the Bible, the writing of Marco Polo, and Pierre d'Ailly's 'Imago Mundi'
(picture of the world). He only accepted the information that supported his beliefs and he
rejected everything else.

On October 12, 1492, two worlds unknown to each other met for the first time on a small island in
the Caribbean Sea. While on a voyage for Spain in search of a direct sea route from Europe to Asia,
Christopher Columbus accidentally discovered the Americas. However, in four separate voyages to
the Caribbean from 1492 to 1504, he remained convinced that he had found the lands that Marco
Polo reached in his overland travels to China at the end of the 13th century. To Columbus it was
only a matter of time before a passage was found through the Caribbean islands to the cities of Asia.

The first European nation to begin actively looking for a sea route to Asia was Portugal. The
Portuguese had already begun exploring Africa in the early 1400s, and in 1415 they invaded
northern Africa and conquered the Muslim community. This gained the Portuguese access to the
African trade, which, until that time, had been dominated by the Muslims. The Portuguese began
exploring the western coast of Africa, hoping to find a route to the riches of Asia by going around
the southern tip of the continent. Other nations, not wanting to be left behind, began sponsoring
voyages of exploration as well.
Columbus's father was Domenico Colombo, a wool weaver who was also involved in local politics.
His mother was Suzanna Fontanarossa, the daughter of a wool weaver. The oldest of five children

Christopher Columbus Misconceptions
Many people in this world don't have the correct knowledge of what has happened in the past. There
has been a lot of misconceptions that people have about North America. A common misconception
that has spread throughout the world is that Christopher Columbus discovered America. That
statement is more than 100% false. Christopher Columbus never set a foot in North America. He
landed in the Caribbean islands and and explored the Central and South American coasts. He didn't
reach North America, which was already discovered by the Native Americans.
People have had this concept in their mind that there were no people in America before Christopher
Columbus made his trip to America. This misconception can be backed up with a lot facts from
primary sources. For example, The McGraw Hill Discovering Our Past textbook explains one of the
early people in America who were the nomads. They were people that moved from place to place in
search of food. The Olmec, The Maya, and the Aztec were also groups of people that were in
America centuries before Columbus was even born. Lastly, of course our Native Americans were
officially the first one to discover America and live in it.
A misconception that is not true is that Christopher Columbus brought people to America. First,
when Christopher Columbus sailed off from Spain, he was alone. Secondly, Christopher Columbus
never made it to North America. So, this misconception can be straight up washed away with these
facts.

Christopher Columbus was a very famous Italian explorer during the 1400s.Now you might well be
asking yourself why did he sail the ocean blue in 1492 and what or who is Columbus.Well,
Columbus was an Italian explorer born between August and October in 1451 in Genoa or known
today as Italy. Columbus started sailing when he was only a teen and traveled to Portugal, which he
soon made his home.Columbus wanted to gain royal sponsors that could aid him in his funds for
Columbus first voyage. It was a rough time for Columbus to gain sponsors, though as the first ones
Columbus asked was France and England, which both declined his aid for his voyage. After a long
time of searching and asking he finally landed himself in Spain, where King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella decided to aid Columbus voyage. Why is this, Why would King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella sponsor Columbus what did they see that everyone else didn't.Well, there are two main
reasons why King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella decided to sponsor Columbus. The Main two was to
help find a new, faster way to Asia so that Spain could trade with them, Columbus also promised
them that he would bring many riches back from his travels. On August third, 1492, Columbus
along with many other sailors started there journey on ships known today as the Santa Maria, Pinta

Americas which lead to the possibility to expand the overpopulated and crowded Europe.
Columbus made four different voyages to what the world now knows as America, he wanted to find
a water route to China because there were many goods that the Europeans wanted, and Columbus
colonized and expanded the territory of Europe.
Columbus' contribution to the world is one that will affect the world for years and years. "Columbus
grew up in a medieval world exhausted by war and bigotries, religious corruption and intolerance, a
time of widespread spiritual dissolution and social pessimism, a continent deeply in need of a
rebirth"(Heat–Moon 5). The era of which Columbus lived in was really in need of a make–over. The
way people acted, their decisions, and their religion were not acceptable to any standard. That time
period was very boring and depressing and it was difficult to be happy. There were so many wars
that it was destroying the world. "Columbus' crossing is the determining, the unique, event leading

Another reason the Spanish monarchs wanted a part of Columbus' voyage was to spread
Catholicism to far places in hopes of gaining a larger following of Catholicism. Columbus, being a
devout follower of the Catholic religion, approved of this because he also wanted to spread the
religion. Also, at the time of Columbus' expedition, Spain's "Reconquista", the expulsion of Jews
and Muslims, was complete, the Spanish turned their focus to exploring and conquering other parts
of the world while spreading the Catholic religion. The Spanish, with Columbus' help, saw an
opportunity with the expedition to begin this exploration and conquest. When Columbus found the
Americas instead of the passage to Asia, this gave the Spanish monarchs even more of a reason to
begin exploration and conquest of these new lands. This was another driving factor of the Spanish
monarchs support for Columbus. Another reason the Spanish monarchs were supportive of
Columbus' ideas for sailing West was because they saw an opportunity to earn more money in the
west with exportation of the goods that Spain was abundant with. Instead, while Columbus was
sailing west, he found the Americas and this changed European life forever. Columbus didn't bring

After his voyage to San Salvador, he then made 3 other voyages to Cuba, The Bahamas, and
Hispaniola. Although he was searching for unexplored land, he was also looking for gold which he
was unsuccessful in finding. Also in his travels he planned on converting the Indians to Christianity.
In Columbus's entire life he never believed that he had found a new continent. His final voyage was
to Jamaica which ended because of a ship wreck. When he was rescued, he was delusional and once
he arrived back in Europe, he soon passed away. When Columbus sailed to prove that the world was
round, according to the website Livescience.com, he was late by two–thousand years. Ancient Greek
mathematicians already have already proved that the world was round and not flat. Also according
to this website, Columbus's education was self taught and he believed that Europe was wider, and
that Japan was further away from China's coast. These are the reasons that he was going to try and
find shorter trade route to Asia. When a student hears Columbus' name they may instantly think that
he was the first person to discover America. Although there were millions of Native Americans who
were living in the New World, Columbus is the man who is getting all of the credit for finding the
New World. There were also other travelers who had discovered America before Christopher

In 1492, Christopher Columbus started his voyage seeking a new trade route to the East Indies, and
he would soon commit of the largest failures in American history. Consequently, Columbus's failure
has credited him as one of the most successful explorers in history. Without realizing, Columbus had
discovered a new country which was later named the New World. Christopher Columbus was
chosen to seek out for a new trade routes by the Spanish monarchy, despite him being Italian. It
seems unreasonable that the Spanish monarchy would not have chosen one of their own trusted
explorers to go on this voyage rather than someone not from their country. Even still, Columbus
managed to convince Spain to fund his voyage. The Spanish monarchy was encouraged to support
Christopher Columbus instead of Spanish explorers because of religious, financial, and reputation
reasons. "No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the
intention is purely for His Holy Service," (Christopher Columbus). Modern day Americans are
products of Columbus' mistake of discovering America. Evidence shows that Columbus believed in
words of the Bible (Ministries, 2012). Columbus estimated the size of the Atlantic Ocean using the
word of the Bible (Giles, 2012). Columbus calculated that there was approximately 2,400 miles
around Earth's circumference because of a passage in the Bible where God separated the world into
six parts of dry land and one of water (Giles, 2012).

Christopher Columbus Summary
In the letter that Christopher Columbus wrote to Luis de Santangel regarding the results of his first
voyage in 1493 demonstrated several problems in Columbus' breakthroughs, aside from his
comprehension of what he uncovered. When interpreting the letter, I observed Columbus' egotism.
He appeared to be providing admiration to the King and Queen of Spain, but in actuality, he was
only bragging about his own accomplishments. Columbus composes, "Since I know that you will be
pleased at the great victory with which Our Lord has crowned my voyage, I write this to you, from
which you will learn how in thirty–three days I passed from the Canary Islands to the Indies, with
the fleet which the most illustrious king and queen, our sovereigns, gave to me. There I found very
many islands, filled with people innumerable, and of them all I have taken possession for their
highnesses, by proclamation made and with the royal standard unfurled, and no opposition was
offered to me." In this situation, Columbus tells of his outcomes from the expedition and
communicates what it encompassed, and how it was proficient. Alternatively, a characteristic of the
letter that struck me was Columbus' stance on the indigenous people. He was between point of
views in that he mentioned his appreciation towards the natives and then progressed to present them
as non–humans. In the book named, The Mysterious History of Columbus: An Exploration of the
Man, the Myth, the Legacy, written by John Noble Wilford,

day dedicated to him in America ever occurred to you? Probably not, but every American with at
least an elementary education has the general knowledge that Christopher Columbus is the hero
credited with discovering America. It wouldn't be an overstatement to even say that he is a national
icon. In actuality, he's far from being a hero. Although he did find a land that was unknown to the
"civilized" world, his actions after the discovery illustrate no characteristics of being heroic at all.

First of all, Columbus was never respectful of the rights of the natives he encountered. As soon as he
arrived there he showed no hesitation in naming the people "Indians" and different names for the
various places and islands he went to. Also, noticing his huge advantage over the natives in the field
of weaponry and technology, Columbus retreated back to Europe and prepared again to come back
to America to take complete control over the "Indians." However, Columbus's destruction didn't just
stop at controlling the natives. When he arrived from his second voyage, he began exporting slaves
in great numbers. And, Columbus didn't persuade the Indians to become slaves for him nicely or
barter with them for their services. In order to make them slaves, Columbus had to use cruel and
harsh punishments to the natives who resisted him. To make an example of an Indian, he would cut
off their hands and tie it onto a necklace around his neck. Columbus and his crew would kill so
many slaves on the voyage back to Europe that it was rumored that one could follow a path of
floating, dead bodies all the way from America to Spain. Rape was even considered a less violent
act committed by them! Columbus and his men were the ignition to the fire that led to the
destruction of the Indians, and yet, America celebrates Columbus Day? How is this when Indians

Christopher Columbus Failures
Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer. He sailed across the Atlantic in the
Santa Maria from Spain, in hopes to find a new passageway to India. The purpose of Christopher
Columbus's voyage was to find a quicker route to Asia. Columbus failed in this attempt. Instead of
finding Asia, he found the "New World". He has been known for opening up the Americas to new
European colonization. Columbus had to have many good reasons in order to make the Spanish
Monarchy financially support him on this voyage.
Queen Isabella was interested in gaining Spanish commercial likelihood in the new territory.
Columbus was first in Europe to colonize regions in the New World, and he did this for the benefit
of the Spanish Monarchy. Later Columbus began initiating more colonies for Spain. This is
precisely what Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand wanted to do. Europeans began to create lots of
inventions that helped them. Cartographers created lots of more precise maps, sailors soon learned
how to use new tools like the astrolabe, and Portugal and Spain rivaled to find a trade route to Asia
that got around the Mediterranean sea. Isabella and Ferdinand became aware that if Columbus found
a route through the Atlantic Ocean to Asia, Spain would become a dominant world power, and could
sovereign trade to Asia.
When the scientific revolution was going on, the Church was possibly one of the most dominant
institutions in the world. The Church power was especially prominent in

Christopher Columbus As A Hero

  • 1. Christopher Columbus As A Hero "A hero. You want to be one of those rare human beings who make history, rather than merely watch it flow around them like water around a rock." Dan Simmons wanted to reflect on the many notable historical figures in our past who were recognized for their courageous traits, leadership ingenuity, and outstanding discoveries that sparked from one individual who was willing to make a change. Christopher Columbus precisely fits the depicted portrait of a hero. Through any given perspective from Europeans during that epoch to our world five centuries later, we see that Columbus was the epitome of the valiant figure, invoking change for the revitalization of Europe and South America as a whole, and igniting the exploration age and philosophical ideas through his heroic actions. During the fifteenth century, Columbus pioneered the paradigm shift in that sailing into the western water was not dangerous, emphasizing his bravery and deterministic attitude. "If a culture is to live, it changes, it always changes. If a people live, they imagine themselves always and in a new sense." The significance behind it underlines Columbus as an opportunist because scholars during that time thought about the likelihood of reaching Asia by sailing westward. Despite these claims, he was the only man who stepped out of a small batch of naval explorers to actually initiate his plan into action. Europe took centuries to start recognizing the impact from Renaissance thinkers, Columbus led a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Christopher Columbus Little may one know about Christopher Columbus, other than the fact that "Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492". Even though he was claimed to have discovered the Americas, he was never the first to arrive there because (according to historians) the Vikings were there first. But, his discovery led other people in Europe know about the Americas therefore changing the world. Columbus shaped the world as we know it today. Columbus was born around 1451 in the republic of Genoa (what today would be in Italy). As a teenager, he participated in some trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas for a job to earn some money. When Columbus was young, voyages had always fascinated him so he decided to start sailing the seas, hoping he could discover something new. His first voyage to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly killed him when a group of French privateers attacked Columbus and his crew off the coast of Portugal. So Columbus had to swim all the way to Lisbon where he settled and married Felipa Perestrello. They had a son named Diego in about the year 1480. Columbus' wife died soon after Columbus went to Spain and then had a second son Fernando who was born out of Wedlock in 1488 with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Columbus studied Mathematics, Astronomy, Cartography, and Navigation at Lisbon which is where Columbus would start his quest to finding a new world. On his mission to discover a new world, he took his plan first to a Portuguese king for a three ship voyage, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Christopher Columbus : The Success Of Christopher Columbus One of the most impactful voyages in our history, lead by Christopher Columbus, almost did not happen due to the lack of funding. This trip, intended to find a western route to India, was actually the beginning of European interest in the "New World" of the Americas. Columbus traveled to countries such as Portugal and England looking to find a sponsor, but ultimately failed. He managed to reach King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the couple known to eventually take part in this proposal and put forth the money. Regardless of the likely persuasive Columbus, it is quite surprising that the King and Queen of Spain decided to fund the ideas of a foreign and unknown sailor. It was likely Columbus's navigational knowledge, Ferdinand and Isabella's want for power, and the possible benefits of the voyage were the things that influenced the couples thinking towards accepting the offer. These reasons are likely the reason of the occurrence of the journey. Columbus had a background in navigation before he came to Spain looking for money. Even as a young teenager, he led a lifestyle of ships and sailing. Being born in Genoa, Italy, he soon held a job on a ship as a merchant that sailed along the Portuguese coasts. He had experience in the water and knew the fundamentals of leading a large fleet. This allowed him to have more power in persuading Ferdinand and Isabella to fund his idea. Also, he studied navigation along with geometry, calculus, and astronomy. Knowledge and skill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Voyage of Christopher Columbus American History I 07/08/05 Christopher Columbus' Voyage to North America Spanish exploration first began with a series of revolutions. First, the Commercial Revolution generated economic stability. Second, the Intellectual Revolution generated interest in the Earth's composition and the pursuit of exploration. Europe then called for a political revolution to end the disorganized and disorderly rule of its government. This revolution returned order and stability to the government and renewed interest in exploration to search for national wealth. The last of these revolutions was the religious revolution (note Columbus' voyage occurred before this revolution). As more people broke away from the national religion they searched for a place ... When Columbus made a friend in Father Perez, it was a turning point for him. He was able to gain support from converts who believed in his cause. Ferdinand and Isabella were harder to convince, however. They found little interest in Columbus' curiosity as they were preoccupied with defending themselves against the Moors. Later in 1491, Columbus again appears before Ferdinand and Isabella "who apparently liked and respected the determined seaman" (38) 1. Although they had admiration for Columbus, his plans for voyage were again rejected, partially because of his request to titles and riches. It seems that Columbus gave but scant and unsatisfactory information to the commission, probably through fear that his ideas might be improperly made use of and he be robbed of the glory and advantages that he expected to derive from his project (2) 2. But Columbus was not yet discouraged, for "he was a gentleman of great force and spirit naturally inclined to undertake worthy deeds and signal enterprises " (21) 3. 1492 was a successful year for the Spanish. On January 2, Grenada surrendered which freed Spain of the foreign power that occupied the city for seven centuries (35) 1. When Columbus was asked to march in the parade at Grenada he took it as an opportunity to propose his voyage for a third time and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Christopher Columbus Failure Christopher Columbus,a historical explorer, made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain. Christopher Columbus was born in the year 1451 in the Republic of Genoa. However, in his 20s, he decided to move to Lisbon, Portugal. Christopher Columbus wanted to explore westward to seek new and different goods. He also believed that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean was the shortest water route to Asia. Christopher Columbus had magnificent navigation and survival skills. He was also very well educated and intelligent. Christopher Columbus formed a proposal to present to countries to get them to pay for his westward voyage. Since Christopher Columbus was in Portugal, he strived to get their support. However, he failed to gain support from the Portuguese for his westward exploration. Due to this failure, Christopher Columbus moved away to Spain. Spain had much lesser power than Portugal. Nevertheless, the Spanish Monarchs, which were King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, politely accepted Christopher Columbus' proposal for westward exploration. In 1492, the country of Granada had fallen to the extortion of the Spanish. This allowed King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to focus their attention on westward exploration. Thus, allowing Christopher Columbus to begin his first voyage. However, Christopher Columbus had to promise to expand the Christian faith to the people of the new world and return with silver, gold, and spices. By promising to do so, Christopher Columbus was ... • 11. Disadvantages Of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was an explorer, navigator, and survivalist who was born and raised in Italy as the eldest son to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa. Columbus went on many explorations, but his most famous was his exploration to the new world. For this exploration Columbus managed to convince the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella, to hire an Italian explorer to work for the Spanish government. There are many advantages and disadvantages to hiring an explorer from a different country. These advantages and disadvantages Christopher Columbus used to convince the king and queen that it was a good idea for them to send Columbus instead of a spaniard. The names of his ships for the voyage were La Pinta meaning "the prostitute", Santa Clara nicknamed the Niña After the owner of the ship (Juan Niño), and the Santa Maria. Unfortunately, the Santa Maria crashed on the first voyage and Columbus had to ride back to Spain aboard the Niña. The voyages Christopher Columbus took to the New World in the late 1400s and early 1500s were supposed to find a different trade route to India. Spain had a large interest in trading with India, so Columbus was going to be an enormous help to the country. Columbus believed that there was a shorter route to reach the goal of India. Columbus was a believer in the fact that the world is round, and he thought that if you went across the Atlantic Ocean you would find a direct water way to Asia. Even though Columbus believed the world was round, he still did not know how large the world was and underestimated the size. Instead of landing in India, Columbus landed upon the Americas. Columbus, at the time, did not realize that he did not make it to India, so when he saw the Native Americans, he called them Indians. Columbus, even though he did not make it to India, still brought information to Spain. • 13. Christopher Columbus Hero Christopher Columbus Many know Christopher Columbus as the man who discovered America, but there's more to Columbus than that. He lived as a man so idealistic that reality became a blur, a man who explored in the name of God, and a man who wanted more than he could earn. However, he died over five hundred years ago, so who can really say who he was? That didn't stop writers or historians though. Born in 1837, Joaquin Miller took a try in writing of Columbus's true nature. In Miller's poem "Columbus", Columbus and his crew cross the sea in a voyage for land. The reader can assume this expedition started out ardous because his ¨men grow mutinous day by day¨ and his ¨men grow ghastly wan and weak¨ during this voyage (Miller, 9 and 10). Still determined to find land, Columbus insists that his crew ¨Sail on! sail on! and on!¨ (Miller, 16). Ultimately though, Columbus's persistence comes across as obsessive when he puts his life and his crew's lives in danger: "Why, now not even God would know / Should I and all my men fall dead." (Miller, 19 and 20). He fails to feel intimidated by the unfamiliar seas because he focuses too much on his ideal future of finding riches. Miller sees this as a valuable leadership quality to power through tough times: "He gained a world; he gave that world / Its grandest lesson: "On! sail on!" (Miller, 39 and 40). But, to keep sailing with lives at stake made for an extremely dangerous risk. At first glance, this source does not seem reliable because its author, Joaquin Miller never sailed on any of Columbus's voyages. Although, Miller being born hundreds of years after Columbus died have its advantages. Because Miller wrote this poem long after the explorer´s death, he could've used a variety of resources. Columbus´s own journals, historian's studies, and even accounts from his own crew. After further analyzation of "Columbus", in the end, Columbus took risks to get what he wanted, making him a good leader. Although, he only got lucky enough not to suffer tragedy at sea and to find land before a great demise. Similarly to Miller, another poet, Walt Whitman, also saw Christopher Columbus as a good explorer. In his poem "Prayer of Columbus", Whitman depicts Columbus near the end of ... • 17. Compare And Contrast Christopher Columbus And Christopher... Throughout recorded human history, authors, leaders, and researchers, have documented the past from many different perspectives, and viewpoints. Not every historian has the same stance on a certain issue, therefore, differences in point of view occur in almost every writing. In the textbook The American Pageant, A People's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart, and Michael Allen, and Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, the reader can see many different perspectives throughout each reading. The infamous explorer known as Christopher Columbus, has been documented in many different ways. Depending on the reading, Columbus has be called everything from a "[...]symbol of the new age of hope", to an inhuman tyrant who captured Indians and turned them into slaves. In the well known textbook, The American Pageant, the reader learns about straightforward facts and events regarding Christopher Columbus. Although the textbook provides the audience with good information, it struggles to go into great detail or depth surrounding Columbus and his voyages in comparison to the two other sources. I believe the authors did a good job avoiding anything controversial, by only including facts and referring to Columbus as a "successful failure" instead of a hero or barbarian. The book didn't carry much detail and wasn't that "juicy" of a source, but fulfilled it's job as a history textbook. The document I choose to include was a map of Columbus' voyages. The map ... • 19. Christopher Columbus Summary Christopher Columbus wrote this letter in the hopes of outlining his discoveries to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. They along with other backers helped him in his pursuit of finding a quicker route to the Chinese trade markets. Columbus wanted many things from his voyage, fame and fortune being the front runners. The King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella wanted the the fame and fortune like Columbus, and also the ability to bring their religion to many lands all over the globe. His crew set sail from Spain in the three well known ships listed as the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria. Columbus sailed from new island to new island for many months on end, in what we now know as the modern day Caribbean. Christopher Columbus's efforts were groundbreaking, and his letter served to further his efforts of another voyage by showcasing his success of discovering the Indies, routes, the people, and their natural resources. The promise of new trade routes, silver, spices, silk, and other merchandise were replaced with his belief he "conquered" new islands, set up a colony, and brought back a small supply of gold and slaves. The letter written by Christopher Columbus in 1493, he explains that they traveled and arrived at the islands of the Indies to begin with. Once there Colombus details that the islands are being populated by Indians. He then describes how he gave new names for each of the islands that he sailed. In the letter he believes Juana is actually part of the mainland of China. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Christopher Columbus Nocturnal Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean; one in 1492, one in 1493, another in 1498, and his last in 1502. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Aragon and Castille approved his first voyage to the new world in 1492. Originally, Christopher Columbus thought that he could find a shorter, much easier passage to India from Spain by cutting across the Atlantic Ocean. He first landed in modern day Watling Island, Bahamas. He met natives that lived there and thought he was in India, so he called them Indians. This is why we called Native Americans Indians. Columbus used many different devices to assist him on his voyages to the Americas in his four trips across the Atlantic Ocean, such as a nocturnal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 23. The Morality Of Christopher Columbus When growing up kids are taught the rhyme that tells us Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and told that he discovered America. This is not actually true. We celebrate a federal holiday every October for a man who did not even discover our country and harmed the people that inhabited it. As time goes on historians have proceeded to learn and write more about the real life of Christopher Columbus and how what we learned as kids isn't all the truth. When they did this the controversy that has come up is over whether there is validity of honoring this explorer as a hero and if it's true that he was the founder. There has been a lot of proof of all the damage that was created by Columbus and his crews, this has lead to an uproar over how much emphasis is placed upon studying and celebrating him in schools and public celebrations. He was one of many European explorers, but just like them Christopher Columbus encountered indigenous people throughout his voyages. He was primarily focused on his mission to find riches and conquer new lands, "Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe" (Christopher Columbus). Columbus and his teams handled the indigenous groups they came across like they were obstacles in the way of their greater mission. There are three huge sources of controversy involving Columbus's interactions with the indigenous people he called "Indians". These people he called Indians weren't actually Indians at all, he thought he had arrived in India and that is where he came up with this term and why Native Americans are wrongly called Indians. Columbus brought the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native peoples to Christianity, and the introduction of a host of new diseases that would impact the lives of the natives and have long–term effects on them. During the time when the international slave trade was starting to grow larger. Columbus and his men enslaved many of the native inhabitants of the West Indies and exposed them to extreme violence. He even sent them as a gift to Queen Isabella, "In lieu of the material riches he had promised the Spanish monarchs, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Christopher Columbus Fault Many around the world always picture Christopher Columbus as a man who did great things for what America is today. Is that all really true? As kids, we have all, been taught that Columbus was the man who discovered America but in reality that is all a lie. Christopher Columbus was a man that made a mistake that started many issues that is still around today. Some of many things Columbus did was: he started the slave trade, he treated the Native Americans poorly, kidnapped the Tainos, and stole gold and many other items of value. Even though he did a lot of bad things not everything that Columbus did was terrible. I feel that though many things that are wrong today are his fault at the end of the day he still made America known in Europe. Christopher Columbus is a man that causes a lot of controversies but it makes a person think that was all he did worth the outcome. Bringing light to what Christopher Columbus does helps to acknowledge his legacy and what he left behind. One of the main issues that arose because of Columbus that stuck with me is him starting the slave trade. The slave trade was a huge thing back in the day that cost many people their lives. Many family and friends were ripped from their homes so they could be auctioned off to someone who would beat them for not doing the work. Many people that were involved in the slave trade never had to work in those sorts of conditions and they could not handle it. Another issue that occurred is the spread of ... • 27. Essay on Christopher Columbus America's national memory is filled with icons and symbols, avatars of deeply held, yet imperfectly understood, beliefs. The role of history in the iconography of the United States is pervasive, yet the facts behind the fiction are somehow lost in an amorphous haze of patriotism and perceived national identity. Christopher Columbus, as a hero and symbol of the first order in America, is an important figure in this pantheon of American myth. His status, not unlike most American icons, is representative not of his own accomplishments, but the self–perception of the society which raised him to his pedestal in the American gallery of heroism. This gallery was not in place at the birth of the political nation. America, as a young republic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "People had even more reason to think of themselves in distinctive American terms." (Noble, 250) Americans, searching for a history and a hero, discovered Columbus. A rash of poetic histories and references to Columbus emerge in the years following the Revolution: Philip Freneau's The Pictures of Columbus, Joel Barlow's 1787 The Vision of Columbus, and Phillis Wheatley's 1775 innovation, the poetic device "Columbia" as a symbol of both Columbus and America. King's College of New York changed its name in 1792 to Columbia, and the new capitol in Washington was subtitled District of Columbia, in deference to those who would name the country after Columbus. Noble observes that, It is not hard to understand the appeal of Columbus as a totem for the new republic and the former subjects of George III. Columbus had found the way of escape from Old World tyranny. He was the solitary individual who challenged the unknown sea, as triumphant Americans contemplated the dangers and promise of their own wilderness frontier...as a consequence of his vision and audacity, there was now a land free from kings, a vast continent for new beginnings. In Columbus the new nation without its own history and mythology found a hero from the distant past, one seemingly free of any taint from association with European colonial powers. The Columbus symbolism gave America an instant mythology and a unique place in history, and their adoption of Columbus magnified his own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Explorers have wandered the face of the Earth since the beginning of time, claiming their territories, deepening their roots, expanding their borders, and securing their land. Humans have explored the most distant parts of the world and are still discovering new territories as we explore our universe and space. The desire to discover is rooted in all of us whether it is for fame, fortunes, or for satisfying curiosity. As a result, great explorers have discovered and destroyed cultures, civilizations, and they have introduced opportunities and new ideas. Columbus left his father's business to join a sailing expedition which ended in a shipwreck near Portugal. He decided to stay in Portugal with his brother and started a family. After his wife died, he was interested in helping his country find a faster way to Asia without paying the Muslim Empire taxes. Since Columbus had read and heard that Asia could be reached by sailing west, he wanted to attempt this expedition and fulfill his dream of going to China. After seven years of not being able to find support for his exploration, he was finally lucky enough to get support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Christopher persevered and was willing to risk his life in order to gain fame, fortune, and fulfill his dream. Christopher was given 87 men and three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, which left in August 1492. Christopher headed west into the Atlantic Ocean, as he had understood that the world was round (but much smaller with his wrong calculations) and that China was on the same latitude as Portugal. On October 12th, Columbus' crew finally spotted land, which was an island in the Caribbean, and called it "San Salvador". He visited many nearby islands, including Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic). Since Christopher thought that he had landed in India, he called the natives "Indians" which is still incorrectly used today. Columbus quickly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Christopher Columbus : The Historical Impact Of... Christopher Columbus was a determined Italian explorer who set out to prove that other geographical regions other than Europe existed. He was a great navigator, and his conquest in the high Atlantic sea landed him in the Americas where he discovered the most beautiful lands he had ever seen. Christopher Columbus made four legendary voyages to America, and he is credited for opening up America for exploration and exploitation by other European explorers and settlers. This essay analyzes the journal of the first voyage of Columbus and incorporates contextual elements related to his life, cultural history, and larger historical impact in America. The journal of the first voyage of Columbus indicates that Christopher Columbus made his first journey in 1492 with the blessings of the then King and Queen of Spain (American Journeys, 89). By making an account of day to day activities and encounters during his voyage, Columbus was clearly not only navigating to fulfill his ambitions but those of the rulers of Spain as well. The journal begins by documenting the war between Spain and the Moors and how Spain had emerged victorious. In this victorious spirit, the King and Queen of Spain perceived as beneficial to support Columbus in his expedition of the oceans to find and conquer more lands. Spain would be known to other continents and recognized as a world power. As Bartosik–Vélez put it, Columbus conquered the New World for Spain (Bartosik–Vélez, 2). Moreover, it would only be practical that the wealth and riches conquered by Columbus would compensate the loss from the previous war and make Spain a wealthier nation. In addition to material wealth, Spain hoped to spread its religion to masses around the world. Columbus was himself a staunch Catholic Christian, the religion that the people of Spain were expected to pledge allegiance to. In the journal of the first voyage, individuals claiming faith in other religions including Muslims and Jews had been banished (American Journeys, 90). Columbus boasts of love for the Christian faith and the call for its propagation. The tone of the text shows that Christopher Columbus was enthusiastic and determined to claim the New World for his King and Queen as well as gain a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Dangers Of Christopher Columbus We all have heard the saying the saying, "Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492." Christopher Columbus is the man who discovered the Americas on accident. It was never Columbus' intention to find the Americas; his focus was to find a water route from Europe to Asia. Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. As a teenager, Columbus would work on a merchant ship. One day, while working on the ship, the ship is attacked. The ship sinks, but Columbus survives. Columbus is going to find safety in Lisbon. He will start to develop his master plan in Lisbon. As I stated earlier, Columbus wanted to this voyage because he was trying to find a trade route between Europe and Asia. All the explorers at that time were eager to explore the far East, but needed a better and effective way because taking the land was too difficult. There were tons of riches, such as gold, silver, and spices in the East that everyone wanted a piece of. So, most of the Portuguese explorers decide to sail around the African continent, but Columbus believes there is an easier route. Columbus suggested that he could travel west across the Atlantic Ocean which was a good idea. However, he had a hard time trying to convince everyone of this idea because his mathematical calculations are incorrect. Columbus argued that the circumference of the Earth was much smaller than everybody else thought it was. Nola Taylor Redd states, "A man of convictions, Christopher Columbus used his strong ... • 35. Christopher Columbus Technology Technology's Impact on the Voyage of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailor, voyaged the Atlantic ocean and discovered for himself the "New World" in 1492. The three ships Columbus sailed on are named the Pinta, the Santa Maria, and the Nina. Although Christopher Columbus is Italian, he carried out his work for Spaniards. Columbus used many forms of navigation including the system of dead reckoning, a magnetic compass, a nocturnal, and a sand glass. However, much of the technology sailors use in today's time, such as an Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS), a gyro compass, and a clock, would have given better assistance to Columbus in order to navigate his location. Therefore, those technologies and tools sailors put to use in today, would have been most beneficial to Christopher Columbus before he died. Columbus had access to a limited range of techniques to voyage across the ocean. One of which includes a system called dead reckoning. This is a process that sailors during the 1400s used in order to find their position while sailing by measuring the course and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of these tools include a gyro compass. This is a compass that does not require a magnetic field on the exterior like the one Christopher Columbus used. The gyro compass is based on a fast– spinning disc and the rotation of the Earth to automatically locate geographical direction. If Columbus were to use a gyro compass, the local magnetic fields would not have interfered with the compass. This tool gives a more accurate determination of the location of a person or in this case not only a person, but a ship too. This form of a compass uses a gyroscope, to keep the compass' spinning disc level and balanced in turbulent, or rough, environments. The poem was about when Christopher Columbus went traveling to different islands through the day and night and he met lots of kind people in an island. He had to bring treasure for his people too. The purpose was to prove people that he was a very good, brave, and a bright man for traveling and finding treasure for his people. The point of view in this poem or document is that Christopher was a brave and a kind man. This point of view is different from the others because this shows that it's a peaceful and it has a few nice things about Christopher Columbus. The Journey Columbus By Christopher Columbus The Journey Columbus's Finding Developed Through the Uncovering of San Salvador in 1492 Christopher Columbus's adventitious finding of San Salvador led to the initial European "discovery" of the New World. He sailed west using three boats: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria (Christopher Columbus the Italian Explorer). After sailing more than three thousand miles, they finally reached Guanahani on October 12, 1492, after thirty–six days of sailing west (Dyson 164). As soon as they landed, Columbus claimed the land for Spain, and named it San Salvador which means Holy Spirit, acknowledging that God's guidance and will led them to the Indies (Christopher Columbus the Italian Explorer). Also at this time, the Tainos greeted them kindly, and some even swam miles offshore to meet them as they were approaching (Dyson 162). The Tainos believed that the newcomers came from the heavens after seeing their clothing, weaponry, and boats, and as it was their custom, they treated the strangers with the utmost respect and with friendliness (Dyson 162). The natives gave the travelers food, water, and gifts to exhibit their peacefulness and camaraderie. Columbus perceived their hospitality, and began trading with them which the Tainos recognized as the principle of reciprocity (Wadsworth Cengage Learning 5). • 41. Essay on Christopher Columbus In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. But should America really celebrate Christopher Columbus? Was he really responsible for finding America or was he just simply lucky? The real question is, should the American people praise a man who had killed many innocent people? Though Columbus Day is celebrated no one really knows for what reasons. Most Americans just enjoy their day off. Would they celebrate Columbus Day if they really knew the facts? Christopher Columbus was an explorer funded by the Spanish king and Queen to find other lands, gold, goods, and other beings. As he was sent on his journey he stumbled upon a country in what is know today as America. At this time there on this mysterious land lived the Arawak Indians living in ... He made all of them– and some other slaves he already had upon his ship given to him by the king of Spain– look for gold that he himself could have and gold and goods that he could bring back with him.. Every slave who had in fact found him gold and goods would get a gold coin around their necks, if anyone whom in which did not have a gold coin hanging would be killed because they did not service him. Columbus called this land his and not only did he make the natives of the land his slaves but he also raped the women and he also brought the natives back to his land to sell them as slaves. Now what are Americans really celebrating him for? Most people are naïve to Columbus but they really don't care or question it they just simply get a day off of work or school. It is a representation of an interpretation that passes for an explanation. Columbus day is celebrated for giving the American people an opportunity to come and live on this land, for Columbus informed England of the "Golden Land" and there they sent their people to America and others started to migrate there because they thought that gold was falling from the sky and then the American people were born. Granted if he did not fall onto America maybe things would be different but all in all he was a selfish man, a man who only cared about his country and his alliances not for the natives in which he ... • 43. Christopher Columbus Flaws Captain hook and Christopher Columbus share many character traits, most of which are flawed and lead to the demise of their powerful position. First and foremost, both were powerful, determined captains. Columbus's determination can be found in his journal entries, Columbus wrote "...I am determined to proceed onward and ascertain whether I can reach Cipango." This quote, along with many other examples can be found throughout his journal entries. This excerpt also leads to the next character flaw of Columbus; greed. According to Dina Gilio–Whitaker, on thoughtco.com, to find the gold he sought out for Columbus enslaved the Arawak people, "the Arawaks were forced under the encomienda system (a system of forced labor that sidestepped the word "slavery") ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As for Captain Hook, most of his character flaws were centered around Tick–Tock the crocodile, who swallowed his hand and has been following him ever since in an attempt to devour the rest of Hook. In Peter Pan (2003) Hook's fear of Tick–Tock is nearly inescapable and haunts him throughout the movie, reappearing each time he fails to kill Peter Pan. Comparable Christopher Columbus's has an evident fear of the Spanish monarchy halting his voyages, leading him to lie and stall in his entries when he mentions his search for gold. Columbus even goes far enough to contain an entire filler paragraph to make himself appear productive in his voyage to discover riches, although all he has found is inhabited islands. Furthermore, Hook holds a deep–rooted rage against Peter and becomes enraged and frustrated when he finds out that his attempts to kill peter were unsuccessful and Peter is in fact, alive and well. This anger and frustration mirrors that of Columbus when a group of Arawak people refused to trade with Columbus and his men, "At one part of the island he got into a fight with Indians who refused to trade as many bows and arrows as he and his men ... Born in 1451 in Genoa, Columbus from an early age would become well acclimated to sailing as he began his career aboard a merchant ship and later study mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation. Growing up and experiencing new thing Columbus began to come up with a plan different from all others to set sail across the Atlantic instead of going around the African continent. With his ideas being turned away from both Portugal and England it was Ferdinand and Isabella who took sympathy upon him and financial back his voyage as they both had hopes of gaining fame and fortune. In 1942, Columbus began his voyages and would carefully document each experience in the form of letters that would have a lasting impact on the world. I believe with the dramatic change in tones we see between the first and fourth letters it gives us the reader a true insight into Columbus's mental and physical emotions over the years. Furthermore, these letters allow us to explore a part of history that is considered monumental while gaining information of what took place over a ten–year journey. Christopher Columbus's successful voyage and discoveries are shown in great details throughout his First Letter to Luis De Sant Angel. • 47. Christopher Columbus Motives Christopher Columbus is an Italian Explorer who had convinced King Ferdinand, the Second and Queen Isabella the First to fund a voyage to Asia to establish trade with China, Japan, India, and the Spice Islands to get valuable spices and silks. Spain went with a foreign explorer because of his benefits over the local explorers. To see what these people's motives are and what they want I will do a background check for the King, the Queen, and Columbus. I'll also go through why the King and Queen went with Christopher Columbus's pitch for his voyage. This will shed more light on why King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella chose Columbus. Columbus had been born in the Republic of Genoa in 1451. Columbus had first gone to sea and was in charge of helping with smaller trading trips throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. One voyage in the Atlantic in 1476 almost cost Columbus his life. The ship he was on got burned down and Columbus had to swim back to Portugal. He eventually moved to Spain after having two wives and two children. Columbus went on many expeditions to Africa and gained knowledge on wave currents. Columbus started studying the Asian islands close to India and China because he had heard of their supposed wealth from other Europeans, he also was curious about the Canary Islands. Columbus began to propose his idea of a three ship voyage across the Atlantic to the Portuguese King, Genoa, and Venice. Columbus requested the Spanish King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella ... The Popularity Of Christopher Columbus, And The Columbus Day Angel Cordova 3 November 2017 Essay 3 Word Count: 1,209 The New Light The federal holiday, Columbus Day, has brought about its own uniqueness amongst many Americans. Generations of schoolchildren were instructed to read or watch videos that claimed Columbus was the founder of America. He was known as an explorer, navigator, and a colonizer. Now, Christopher Columbus is no longer portrayed as the hero he once was. Over many years, there has been a series of stories told by others, and a proof of documentation found to reveal information about his life, famous voyages, and the multicultural movement. The birthday of Christopher Columbus remains unknown to this day. He was presumed born between August 26 and October 31, 1451, in Genoa, Italy (Flint). In his thirties, when his ship was wrecked, he managed to grab a wooden oar and reach the shore in Portugal (Cavendish). He returned to Spain in 1504 after his last voyage (Cavendish). Columbus had been arrested years prior to accusations of tyranny and brutality toward native peoples of the Americas. But he was released by King Ferdinand after six weeks in prison. He was subsequently denied most of the profits of his discoveries promised to him by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (Wanjek). Columbus was fifty–three and in deprived well–being. He was living comfortably, economically speaking, in an apartment in Valladolid, Crown of Castile, in present–day Spain, albeit in pain from severe arthritis (Wanjek). He is now suspected to ... In grade school, I was taught this rhyme to learn about Christopher Columbus. Most of what I learned about Christopher Columbus then, was that he thought the world was round (and others didn't); and that he wanted to sail to India, but messed up, and landed in America, calling the natives "Indians." As I grew older, I learned a little bit more about Columbus's trips to the Americas. I was told that Christopher Columbus wasn't as nice of a person as I was taught when I was younger. I learned that Columbus' heart was set on acquiring as much gold from the natives as possible. He turned them into slaves and brought diseases with him–from which whole tribes died off. While I was surprised to hear about these unfortunate actions, I was more surprised that I had never heard about them. At first, I was hesitant to believe these stories, but as we learned more about his travels, the stories seemed to be more realistic, and true. However, when I was able to read the extracts from Christopher Columbus' journal, I was able to better piece together the type of man Christopher Columbus was. Christopher Columbus was a leader, explorer, adventurer, thinker, and doer. Although he was rejected multiple times whilst trying to get the funds necessary to travel to India, he did not give up and continued to seek the approval of the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies. • 53. Christopher Columbus Contributions There are countless influential figures in the history of our world, even in just one country there are so many to consider. From politicians to military leaders, from artists to scientists, and from explorers to revolutionaries, our world has evolved in the way it is lead, lived in, and organized as well as how we think and the endless possibilities that go along with that. With this being said I believe that Christopher Columbus was the most influential figure in world history (or at least in the time which we studied) due to effects on culture, geography, and world view. Christopher Columbus is perhaps the most well known explorer of all time, for his discovery of The Americas, which he referred to as "the Indies." This discovery was not deliberate, however, as his intention was to find a more efficient way of travelling to Asia, to obtain spices, by sailing west. This goal was obstructed however, due to the entire continent of what is now known as North America being in the way. Columbus was not aware of this mistake though, and believed that he was, in fact, in the continent of Asia. This place was not the Indies, and the people who were there were not Indians, the world later discovered, however this did not correct the false idea put in place. Despite these people being Native Americans who were living in their homeland, for hundreds succeeding this discovery, even to this day, people had and are incorrectly claiming that they are "Indians, which is false, ignorant, ... There has been a lot of misconceptions that people have about North America. A common misconception that has spread throughout the world is that Christopher Columbus discovered America. That statement is more than 100% false. Christopher Columbus never set a foot in North America. He landed in the Caribbean islands and and explored the Central and South American coasts. He didn't reach North America, which was already discovered by the Native Americans. People have had this concept in their mind that there were no people in America before Christopher Columbus made his trip to America. This misconception can be backed up with a lot facts from primary sources. For example, The McGraw Hill Discovering Our Past textbook explains one of the early people in America who were the nomads. They were people that moved from place to place in search of food. The Olmec, The Maya, and the Aztec were also groups of people that were in America centuries before Columbus was even born. Lastly, of course our Native Americans were officially the first one to discover America and live in it. A misconception that is not true is that Christopher Columbus brought people to America. First, when Christopher Columbus sailed off from Spain, he was alone. Secondly, Christopher Columbus never made it to North America. "Columbus grew up in a medieval world exhausted by war and bigotries, religious corruption and intolerance, a time of widespread spiritual dissolution and social pessimism, a continent deeply in need of a rebirth"(Heat–Moon 5). The era of which Columbus lived in was really in need of a make–over. The way people acted, their decisions, and their religion were not acceptable to any standard. That time period was very boring and depressing and it was difficult to be happy. There were so many wars that it was destroying the world. "Columbus' crossing is the determining, the unique, event leading up to the greatest discovery in history"(Taviani 90). Without Columbus' discovery, we wouldn't have discovered the Americas until much later. England ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another reason the Spanish monarchs wanted a part of Columbus' voyage was to spread Catholicism to far places in hopes of gaining a larger following of Catholicism. Columbus, being a devout follower of the Catholic religion, approved of this because he also wanted to spread the religion. Also, at the time of Columbus' expedition, Spain's "Reconquista", the expulsion of Jews and Muslims, was complete, the Spanish turned their focus to exploring and conquering other parts of the world while spreading the Catholic religion. The Spanish, with Columbus' help, saw an opportunity with the expedition to begin this exploration and conquest. When Columbus found the Americas instead of the passage to Asia, this gave the Spanish monarchs even more of a reason to begin exploration and conquest of these new lands. This was another driving factor of the Spanish monarchs support for Columbus. Another reason the Spanish monarchs were supportive of Columbus' ideas for sailing West was because they saw an opportunity to earn more money in the west with exportation of the goods that Spain was abundant with. Instead, while Columbus was sailing west, he found the Americas and this changed European life forever. • 72. Christopher Columbus Failure In 1492, Christopher Columbus started his voyage seeking a new trade route to the East Indies, and he would soon commit of the largest failures in American history. Consequently, Columbus's failure has credited him as one of the most successful explorers in history. Without realizing, Columbus had discovered a new country which was later named the New World. Christopher Columbus was chosen to seek out for a new trade routes by the Spanish monarchy, despite him being Italian. It seems unreasonable that the Spanish monarchy would not have chosen one of their own trusted explorers to go on this voyage rather than someone not from their country. Even still, Columbus managed to convince Spain to fund his voyage. The Spanish monarchy was encouraged to support Christopher Columbus instead of Spanish explorers because of religious, financial, and reputation reasons. "No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His Holy Service," (Christopher Columbus). Modern day Americans are products of Columbus' mistake of discovering America. Evidence shows that Columbus believed in words of the Bible (Ministries, 2012). Columbus estimated the size of the Atlantic Ocean using the word of the Bible (Giles, 2012). Columbus calculated that there was approximately 2,400 miles around Earth's circumference because of a passage in the Bible where God separated the world into six parts of dry land and one of water (Giles, 2012). ... • 74. Christopher Columbus Summary In the letter that Christopher Columbus wrote to Luis de Santangel regarding the results of his first voyage in 1493 demonstrated several problems in Columbus' breakthroughs, aside from his comprehension of what he uncovered. When interpreting the letter, I observed Columbus' egotism. He appeared to be providing admiration to the King and Queen of Spain, but in actuality, he was only bragging about his own accomplishments. Columbus composes, "Since I know that you will be pleased at the great victory with which Our Lord has crowned my voyage, I write this to you, from which you will learn how in thirty–three days I passed from the Canary Islands to the Indies, with the fleet which the most illustrious king and queen, our sovereigns, gave to me. There I found very many islands, filled with people innumerable, and of them all I have taken possession for their highnesses, by proclamation made and with the royal standard unfurled, and no opposition was offered to me." In this situation, Columbus tells of his outcomes from the expedition and communicates what it encompassed, and how it was proficient. Alternatively, a characteristic of the letter that struck me was Columbus' stance on the indigenous people. He was between point of views in that he mentioned his appreciation towards the natives and then progressed to present them as non–humans. In the book named, The Mysterious History of Columbus: An Exploration of the Man, the Myth, the Legacy, written by John Noble Wilford, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While enjoying the day off has the question of why an Italian explorer has a day dedicated to him in America ever occurred to you? Probably not, but every American with at least an elementary education has the general knowledge that Christopher Columbus is the hero credited with discovering America. It wouldn't be an overstatement to even say that he is a national icon. In actuality, he's far from being a hero. Although he did find a land that was unknown to the "civilized" world, his actions after the discovery illustrate no characteristics of being heroic at all. Born roughly around 1451 in Genoa, Italy, Christopher Columbus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, Columbus was never respectful of the rights of the natives he encountered. As soon as he arrived there he showed no hesitation in naming the people "Indians" and different names for the various places and islands he went to. Also, noticing his huge advantage over the natives in the field of weaponry and technology, Columbus retreated back to Europe and prepared again to come back to America to take complete control over the "Indians." However, Columbus's destruction didn't just stop at controlling the natives. When he arrived from his second voyage, he began exporting slaves in great numbers. And, Columbus didn't persuade the Indians to become slaves for him nicely or barter with them for their services. In order to make them slaves, Columbus had to use cruel and harsh punishments to the natives who resisted him. To make an example of an Indian, he would cut off their hands and tie it onto a necklace around his neck. Columbus and his crew would kill so many slaves on the voyage back to Europe that it was rumored that one could follow a path of floating, dead bodies all the way from America to Spain. Rape was even considered a less violent act committed by them! Columbus and his men were the ignition to the fire that led to the destruction of the Indians, and yet, America celebrates Columbus Day?
