What we have learnt from the preliminary task Question 7
Planning We decided that we would make the media product film noir. We looked at 10 areas of research, all of the research types were put onto our blogs: Genre conventions Genre History Initial ideas Institution research Audience research Title sequence time line Nine screen analysis of an opening sequence (Sin City) Pitch Call sheet Storyboard and animatic
Genre conventions We listed on a word document all the different types genre conventions for example: visual style and settings. In all there are 5 categories in which we did research on the conventions which all helped us to create our media product because it gave us a detailed view point and background of what makes a good film noir product.
Genre History When researching the film noir genre a good thing to do is watch old films. They give a first hand and classic view of Film Noir which gives us inspiration but also a guide line of what works and what doesn’t work as a film noir genre
Initial ideas
Institutional research We researched the institutions by watching classic film noirs such as ‘the big combo’ and ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ to get experience needed and the information to learn about the film noir institution. We found out about the famous producers such as Joel Silver who made the company Silver productions, another production company which is associated with film noir is Dark Castle which produced films such as ‘RocknRoller’ which in the UK produced a total gross profit of £25.7 million in the UK alone
Audience research Using various websites we found out the main target audience for film noir products. We found that people who are fans of art and people who want to make their own films. This is because of the artistic talent, cinematography and stylishness of the film. We found that most film certificates are 15+ such as ‘se7en’ and ‘V for vendetta’
Title sequence time line By evaluating the title sequence for ‘Sin City’ we could develop the knowledge of how to incorporate a good title sequence into our film noir media product. This would make the film more gripping and give a more professional image to the film.

Call Sheet
