2. Green Building
⊷ Also known as green construction or
sustainable building
⊷ Application of process that are
environmentally responsible and
resource efficient throughout the
building life cycle
⊷ It include
design,renovation,operation,constructi
on,mantainance and demolition
4. Indoor Environmental
Quality
⊷ Refers to the quality of the building environment in
relation of health and wellbeing of those occupy space
within it
⊷ Exposure to high contaminant environment in the
building can lead to disease and illness
⊷ Indoor characteristic that most affect human health are
connected to thermal comfort,lighting,moisture,mould
and noise
⊷ Many complaint related to sickness absence rate of
office worker are due to sick building syndrome and
building related illnesses
7. Common source of
contaminant in a building
People smoking in the building
Combustion such as in HVAC equipment, stove and vehicle at
garage or near the entrance
Building materials such as paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and
furniture that may emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
substances that vaporize at room temperature and can cause health
problems
Mold resulting from moisture in building material
8. Continue...
Cleaning materials
Pollutant from occupant shoes
Occupants’ respiration, which
increases carbon dioxide levels
and may introduce germs
Pollutant from specific processes
from laboratories,hospital or
factory
9. Effect of bad IEQ
Human
society
• Absenteeism to work due to disease and illnesses
• Feel uncomfortable to work inside the building
• Tend to feel fatigue when doing work
Health
• Risk of getting cold
• Headache
• Asthma
• Lung disease
World
• Economy problem due to lack of workers
• Decrease quality of production
• Pollution increase
10. Sick building syndrome
• a situation in which the occupants of a building experience acute
health- or comfort-related effects that seem to be linked directly to the
time spent in the building
11. Challenges for implementation
• High cost to implement
• To re-design a building with eco friendly aspect
sometime need high cost
• To have comfort zone in a building many changes
need to be made
• For example ventilation system in a building
COST
• Some of the employer did not have any awareness to
indoor environmental quality problem
• They tent to see this problem lightly
• Employee also need to be aware for this problem
since it involve quality of their working condition
• They have to complaint if they are having a bad
indoor environment quality in the building
12. Challenge for implementation
• Government incentive and regulation are one of
the biggest challenges faced
• lack of enforcement or government regulations to
push forward green building initiatives
• Well-targeted financial incentives such as lower
local government taxes would encourage green
building adoption in the marketplace
• Shortages of green skills have become a major
constraint to energy efficient building programs
• It is important that there are enough workers,
equipped with the right skills to ensure that the
indoor environmental quality can be overcome
13. Suggestion/Solution
Use daylighting Install operable
windows
Give occupants
temperature and
ventilation control
Give occupants
lighting control
Provide ergonomic
furniture
Conduct occupant
surveys
14. Potential unethical problem
Do
Smoking at the
area that had been
provided
Use less VOC
contain material in
the building
Arrange the
workstation neat
and clean
Aware and provide
help if there are
problem involving
IEQ
Don’t
Smoking at the
work station
Excessive used of
VOC material
inside the building
Did not clean and
arrange
workstation
properly
Ignore the IEQ
problem at the
workplace
