Except in the mountains, the climate of Cuba is semitropical or temperate. The average minimum temperature is 21° C (70° F ), the average maximum 27° C (81° F ). The mean temperature at Havana is about 25° C (77° F ). The trade winds and sea breezes make coastal areas more habitable than temperature alone would indicate. Cuba has a rainy season from May to October. The mountain areas have an average precipitation of more than 180 cm (70 in); most of the lowland area has from 90 to 140 cm (35–55 in) annually; and the area around Guantánamo Bay has less than 65 cm (26 in). Droughts are common. Cuba's eastern coast is often hit by hurricanes from August to October, resulting in great economic loss.Read more: http://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/Americas/Cuba-CLIMATE.html#ixzz2yKHwYpUh
GEOGRAPHYCuba is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea. Cuba and its neighbors form the Greater Antilles, a chain of islands created millions of years ago when two of Earth's tectonic plates collided.
Cuba is a long and narrow island. It stretches 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) from east to west, but is only 60 miles (100 kilometers) wide in most places.
High mountains and rolling hills cover about one-third of Cuba. The other two-thirds of the island are lowland plains used mainly for farming.
Cuba has more animal and plant species than anywhere else in the Caribbean. Because of the many different habitats, from mountain forests to jungles and grasslands. There are even small deserts. These different ecosystems are home to unique plants and animals found only in Cuba.
Many interesting creatures live in Cuba's thick forests. Most famous is the bee hummingbird, the world's smallest bird. Adult bee hummingbirds grow to only two inches (five centimeters) long. The world's smallest frog also lives in Cuba.
Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592.[5] Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city.[6] The sinking of theU.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish-American War.[7]
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado, and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban Government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices.[8] The current mayor is Marta Hernández from theCommunist Party of Cuba (PCC).[9] In 2009, the city/province had the 3rd highest income in the country.[10]
The city attracts over a million tourists annually,[11] the Official Census for Havana reports that in 2010 the city was visited by 1,176,627 international tourists,[11] a 20.0% increase from 2005. The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.[12] The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.[13]
Just the same kind we do! An average wardrobe in Cuba today has casual slacks or jeans, shorts, dresses, skirts (for women) and T-shirts or loose-fitting tops
Cuba festivals is the carnival atSantiago de Cuba, held annually from July 18 to 27. One of the most raucous of Cuban events the weeklong festival celebrates Cuban traditions dating back hundreds of years. Like many other Cuban festivals, the Santiago carnival began as a religious event: the saint day of Santiago (St. James) is July 25. The festivities became a time for celebration by Santiago’s slaves, who introduced some of the dance, music, and costumes still typical of the Santiago carnival. Over the years, the carnival incorporated elements of African, Spanish, French, and communist Cuban traditions and culture.
Cuba’s capital city, Havana, has its own carnival. The second largest of all Cuba festivals, the carnival de la Habana takes place in late July and early August. Top bands and dancers from across the island perform in old Havana and join in lively parades down the historic El Malecon promenade.
Dominoes:Walking around any of the Cuban neighborhoods youd certainly find a noisy group of a contagious joy, placed around a table with four rustic chairs or simple boxes, and people playing the Cubans preferred game: the dominos.
"Quince Fiesta : As most of the traditions, this celebration nourishes from many origins, one of them could be the so called party for the introduction to the society, very popular in Europe and held in the 19th century. Cuban families have made of the 15th birthday all an event in the life of the young girls. Also in Central and South America, as well as other islands in the Caribbean celebrate the day with intensity. There is all an industry, mainly private, related to the event. It goes from the manufacturing of the dress up to the formal clothes of relatives and friends. The decoration and the girls dress are the center. The well known birthday cake, with creative designs is also very important. Expectation is created when the honoured girl goes to dance the opening vales with her father, a moment of true emotions After dancing with her god father, grandfathers and brothers she joins to the court of other fourteen couples formed by other youngsters.
Unlike most countries in Latin America, Cuba's favorite sport is not soccer. It's baseball! Baseball came to Cuba from the United States in the 1860s. Many international baseball stars have come from Cuba, and the Cuban national team is one of the best in the world.
Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Native American Taino food, Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisines. Some Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish and African cooking, with some Caribbean influence in spice and flavor. This results in a unique, interesting and flavorful blend of the several different cultural influences, with strong similarities with the cuisine of the neighboring Dominican Republic andPuerto Rico. A small but noteworthy Chinese influence can also be accounted for, mainly in the Havana area. During colonial times, Cuba was an important port for trade, and many Spaniards who lived there brought their culinary traditions along with them.[1]
A typical meal would consist of rice and beans, cooked together or apart. When cooked together the recipe is called either "Congri" or "Moros" or "Moros y Cristianos" (black beans and rice). If cooked separately it is called "Arroz con/y Frijoles" (rice with/and beans).[3] A main course (mainly pork or beef) like "Ropa Vieja", some sort of vianda (not to be confused with the French viande which stands for "meat", this term encompasses several types of tubers, such as yuca, malanga, and potato all served either hervidas (boiled) or fritas (fried), as well as plantains, unripe bananas and even corn), a salad (usually simply composed of tomato, lettuce and avocado, though cucumber, carrots, cabbage, fermented green beans and radish are not uncommon). Curiously, typical criollo meals largely ignore fruit, except ripe plantains, which are usually consumed together with the rice and beans. Tropical fruit could be served, however, depending on each family's preferences. Usually, all dishes are brought together to the table at once, except maybe for desserts which typically consists of guava candied in syrup with anise and cinnamon served with a tangy and pungent white Sheep milk cheese.
