   Upward mobility is limited in most organizations due
    to elimimination of middle management

   Lateral moves
   Human ResourcesR looks to people at the next
    level down, and over, for transfer. Sometimes the
    person can be two steps down or in another
    department, which makes it difficult to locate the
    right person.

   Emphasis on movement in the organization may be in
   any direction, including up, down, and side to side

   Many organizations have shifted to alternative mobility
   paths for two reasons:
      1. There is a need to be flexible given global and
                 technological changes
      2. Slower growth has made it necessary for
   organizations to find
           alternative ways to utilize employee talents.
