Editor's Notes
Welcome everyone to today’s media presentation on Social media and its impact on future sales at Northwestern Technologies. I’m Mary Hughes from Sterling, Cooper, & Draper. Let’s begin.
The outline for what I am proposing to build for you is as follows:
I’ll explain what Social Media is
I will talk about the popularity and rise in social media, and
Its role in the IT industry
I’ll move on to explain how Northwestern Technologies could benefit from a presence in social media.
And finally, I will bring this all together with proposals and strategies to launch Northwestern Technologies into the global market using various social media platforms. I’ll show you how you can have the world at your fingertips. At my conclusion, I’ll briefly harness the key points, and take questions.
Social media is a global language that gives nearly every human being on the planet a way to share content from words, music, and pictures to products and how-to videos that enable users to connect instantaneously. It allows our social impulses to be solely web-based. This exchange of information has given rise to around 400 social networking sites and the number continues to grow.
Who uses social media? Well, in a word – [almost] everyone. Nearly three quarters of all adults are using some form of social media, and the numbers are growing. These numbers also transcend financial status, education, race, and gender. Really, we’re all engaged somehow. Why is that? Basic human nature – we are programmed to be social beings and now we can really control how hooked up, or not, we want to be. An example would be those who choose to live off the grid, but maintain a web account of some kind in order to keep in touch – but not too in touch.
Businesses have adapted and learned to capitalize on social media platforms such at Twitter, Facebook fan pages, and YouTube to increase sales through better customer service, product education and a very unique 2-way communication that previously did not exist prior to the networking revolution.
The role of social media in the IT industry covers many aspects. One is to streamline B2B sales by participating in a variety of social media platforms such as webinars, blogs, and Facebook Fan pages. YouTube is also a resource for businesses, especially tech-based companies that can provide instructional information that could be potentially viewed by anyone with a certain question about how to use certain products. Employees of other IT firms use social media and that connection is crucial in boosting B2B sales. Other IT companies can use platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, and blogs to learn about Northwestern Technologies and its products.
With around 400 networking applications available, the benefits to Northwester Technologies are far reaching. One of the most important benefits to using social media is its impact on connecting to new customers – the goal of every business. With so many different types of companies taking part in the info sharing revolution, the public at large expects a high tech company to not just dabble in social media, but lead the industry with advanced applications and links to customer service and new products. Using blogs, webinars, and fan pages to promote Northwestern Technologies will increase brand awareness.
If you’re still unsure about the impact and longevity of social networking on the future of business, consider this: by electing to pass on a a social media strategy you’re missing out on the projected 2 billion members of the web community who use social platforms exclusively to gather information. Newspapers, libraries, and other references are becoming a thing of the past when it comes to business promotions. Don’t worry, I love the library and promoting literacy, but as far as getting your brand out there and raising awareness, use of social media is the fastest and cheapest way to tell the world who you are.
