TRAILER ANALYSIS 16-20
Mitchell Frost
EDEN
 The initial establishing shot of the aeroplane creates a sense of freedom due to the flying sensation. The long shot of
the two men walking down the prison corridor is a shot which makes clear of who is who and the ranks of these
people. From the two men walking freely down the centre of the corridor in everyday clothes and the woman
appearing from the cells at the side all dressed in a simple leotard, men are therefore represented as superior to
woman and in charge. This is a very contradictive piece of text and purposefully provokes debate. The low key lighting
and prison location is different and not something we get to see too often, therefore meaning the audience are
encouraged to watch the full film. The fast paced handheld action makes it very hard for the viewer to fully piece
together what is happening. Lots of low key lighting makes every shot very un revealing and suggests that the film will
carry themes of secrecy and dark undertones. The high angle extreme close up shot through the magnifying glass gave
us inspiration as we liked the attention that is paid to the detail, the shot through the glass is complex as different
layers are used and creates more depth in the shot. The sound bridge of the mans voice makes it clear of the
contextual situation of the film and we understand that men hold social dominance in this fictional society and that
the man holds a power over these women.Titles are used over the shots in order to let the audience know of what film
critics thought of the film, others opinions will help the viewer decide whether or not to watch the film.Costume is
used to contradict the status of woman and men, men in the trailer are seen wearing formal clothes, for example the
soldiers in their uniforms, it is clear they hold some sort of responsibility and a duty, on the other hand the women in
basic, plain clothing are not represented as having much of an importance in society. The text will appear to people
who have strong views of misogyny.

TERMINATOR:GENISYS
 The camera placement of the opening shot is used in order to make the audience feel of distance to the scene and the action, the fact
the camera is placed in a dark garage and at a low angle gives the impression that somebody is watching the boy, the long shot allows
us to identify of some of the dangers that the young boy, the mother and the dog may be exposed to.The low key lighting creates a
negative, oppressive feel. The extreme close up of the mother and boys hand shows that they have a strong relationship, therefore any
negative events that occur after this causes the audience to feel upset as they understand the relationship between the characters. Age
is represented in an anti-stereotypical way, with the mother of the boy seen to be more scared than the boy.The low angle shot of the
boy, alongside the shot reverse shot of the high angled shot of the mother, represents the boy as a lot more brave and powerful
although he is physically smaller and younger. In keeping with modern texts, lots of CGI is used to create explosions and futuristic
technology, we have found this a big part of modern day texts and from our survey have found that 70% of people wish to see some sort
of CGI used within a film, this lead us to the decision of using CGI in our trailer in order to appeal to the mass audience. Within this
trailer, CGI is used to blow up Los Angeles, this scenario is very fictional and surreal, thus appealing to a mass audience. Lots of slow
fade to black transitions are used, alongside a change in music, this makes it very clear to the viewer that the text is a trailer as it creates
a fragmented piece of text which is not fluent. The change in music from a low pitched bellowing tone to a high pitched happy tone
indicates the variety and range of scenes, therefore representing the film as a whole. From the voiceover we get a slight insight into the
background and contextual information of the plot, therefore giving the viewer some more incentive to go and watch the full film as
they have a better understanding. In the trailer we are able to see through the use of costume that woman are represented as weak and
as not serving much of a purpose this we know not to be true, therefore the directors have followed conventions of older texts, where
there would be a clear gender imbalance. The heavy makeup and long hair of the lady in contrast to the battle scars and a range of
resources such as guns used by the men, means that a typical damsel in distress character is created as the lady is seen to be there to be
protected by the men and it is implied she is less as useful as the men.The positions of the cuts are used to effectively not reveal lots of
information, we only see the build up of events and never the full outcome, this is left for the full film. I like how effective the short and
snappy shots are of this trailer and have decided to try and create my trailer with lots of short, explosive shots.

JURASSIC WORLD
 This film is a second instalment of the already existing billion dollar film ‘Jurassic park’, therefore meaning most of the viewers already
have a slight knowledge about the film. Dramatic irony is used in order to foreshadow what is to come in the full film, the mother of the
children says, “If something chases you, run.” Although at the time she says this in a sarcastic/funny tone, we know that later on a
serious situation will arise. The ‘Universal’ graphic logo as an introduction instantly means that the majority of the audience can relate to
other award winning films of which they are fans of which have links to ‘Universal’, therefore encourages them to continue watching as
they have always had a positive experience with them before. The handheld action of the camera represents the young boy as excited,
we understand that he can not keep still and shares a passion with dinosaurs. The low angled, close up, tracking shot of the boy as he
runs through the crowd of adults of whom are much taller and stronger than him is evidence of the lengths he is prepared to go to come
near to these dinosaurs. Lots of CGI is used in order to create these fictional dinosaurs, I feel that this film will appeal to a very wide
audience as dinosaurs are something of history, which lots of people wish to experience how they would of lived and acted. The big
swooping establishing shots created using a crane, create a feeling of freedom alongside the harmonic soundtrack, implying a child like
theme, even if the viewer is an older adult they more than likely had some sort of interest in dinosaurs when they were younger,
therefore they can reminisce on their youthful days. The everyday clothing of all the characters makes it as relatable as possible to the
audience, therefore they feel less distanced and creates a believable feel. The shots used make us feel nearer to the dinosaurs than the
characters in the film, thus making us feel privileged. The increased tempo along with the silence before the beast jumps from the water
indicates that something is going to happen and creates suspension, it is also comical, the fact that a great white shark, an animal we
see as being top of the food chain is made to look so weak and small. A POV of the dinosaur is used in order to tease us as the viewer,
this is because we don't actually get to see the dinosaur. Typical of a trailer, lots of noises are used in order to leave the audience
guessing what happens, and leaving them to find out in the main film as they wish to find out if their guess is right. In keeping with
modern day texts, the alpha female is represented as more powerful and more resourceful than the men. We hope to create a balance in
gender within our trailer through the use of props and costume. Lighting is important in this trailer as it indicates as to whether the
character is in trouble or not, low key lighting suggests that they are in trouble.

SAN ANDREAS
 The first shot, a tracking mid shot of deep focus allows for both the helicopter and the scenery to be focused on.The slow motion used in
the shot of the helicopter, puts an emphasis on the power of the helicopter and reveals just how complex the rotas of the helicopter are.
The slow motion of the helicopter and the slow piano soundtrack give a sense of freedom, especially as flying connotes freedom and
escape. The establishing shot of Los Angeles is a shot of which most of us are familiar with being used in films, I personally do not like
these cliché shots and when creating my trailer I will try to steer clear and make use of some more original shots. However on the other
hand it could be argued that the shot of the city helps to set the scene for the audience and lets them know of where the film will be set,
gradually adding to their contextual knowledge of the film. The pan shots of the city landscape are used in order to represent the city as
vast and complex as we are able to get a good view. The graphic coding is fragmented by certain shots which help the viewer to reflect on
the question as well as leaving them thinking about what is to come next. A change in the soundtrack, from peaceful piano to a more fast
paced violent piano soundtrack indicate something bad, this alongside the extreme close up of the lady’s face in order to show her scared
and worried emotion, allows us to sympathise with the character and makes the audience feel as if they want to help. The pleonastic
sound of the car tyres screeching indicates some sort of emergency as we would associate this noise with having to stop quickly because
of a hazard, this hazard, as an audience we wish to find out.The soundtrack which is played over the short snippets of shots, almost
makes them flashbacks, we are muted from the sound of the scene by the soundtrack and therefore only get a visual representation of
what is happening- thus encouraging the viewer to watch the full film. We hope that by doing this is in our trailer, we create a sense of
secrecy leaving the audience feeling as if they did not experience the full extent of the action, enticing them to watch the full film. From
using actors such as Dwayne Johnson who have been used in many major films to play the alpha male, it instantly has an appeal to
already existing fans of his work. The three shot where the lady is in the middle of the two men represents the overall gender of females
as powerful and brave, this is very typical of modern day texts. Although through the use of costume and resources such as helicopters
we are able to identify who holds what status, in the end we can imply that the overall human race is too weak for this natural hazard of
an earthquake as from the use of extreme long shots we are able to see the extent of which the damage the earthquake has caused.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yftHosO0eUo
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
 The initial pull focus shot is used in order to give the impression of waking up, we see the complex layering of the electricity cables and
the palm trees, contradictory to each other, the palm trees are beautiful and something of nature where as the electric cables are ugly
and man made, maybe hinting at the ugly reality of the world we live in.Themes of realism are clear from the start and throughout. The
close up aerial shot of the man laying on his back surrounded by vinyl covers and with his earphones in indicates that he has a passion
for music,The low key lighting of the room in which he lays suggests that his life outside of his headphones and therefore music is dull
and hopeless. Just from costume, the baseball jersey and cap, we are able to identify that he is American. Use of props such as guns
and drugs creates a stereotypical representation of what it is like to be poor and live in these areas of Compton. The high pitched,
subtle music carries themes of hope and belief. The use of close up shots of the man when he is getting arrested helps to focus on his
emotion and how much of an effect it really has on him, allowing for the audience to sympathise with the man. There is a clear gender
imbalance throughout, we see white policeman arresting black males, here people of the black ethnicity are seen to be the criminals
and a clear division is show between white and black people. We see a racist society of which these people live in which addresses some
of the problems facing America in the world today. Lots of fade to black transitions leave us wandering what happens next and what
the final outcome was, this means we are enticed to watch the full film. An array of shot reverse shots are used in order to show the
close connection between all the members of the gang, we understand that they are all on the same wavelength. The contrast in
costume, the white policeman wears a uniform indicating he has a responsibility and holds status where as the black males wear casual
street clothes we would usually associate with gangsters, there is a clear gender imbalance, with black males being represented as less
important. Real life NWA songs are used as the soundtracks as the audience of the trailer and film would remember and like these
songs, encouraging them to watch the film. From the trailer we can see the transition as the gang go from poor to rich, the change of
clothing and use of gold chains when they are rich indicates wealth. There is a huge focus and representation of gang culture,
sometimes negative representations such as when they are arrested and sometimes positive such as when they are performing and
giving something back.

ANALYSIS OF TRAILERS

  • 2. EDEN  The initial establishing shot of the aeroplane creates a sense of freedom due to the flying sensation. The long shot of the two men walking down the prison corridor is a shot which makes clear of who is who and the ranks of these people. From the two men walking freely down the centre of the corridor in everyday clothes and the woman appearing from the cells at the side all dressed in a simple leotard, men are therefore represented as superior to woman and in charge. This is a very contradictive piece of text and purposefully provokes debate. The low key lighting and prison location is different and not something we get to see too often, therefore meaning the audience are encouraged to watch the full film. The fast paced handheld action makes it very hard for the viewer to fully piece together what is happening. Lots of low key lighting makes every shot very un revealing and suggests that the film will carry themes of secrecy and dark undertones. The high angle extreme close up shot through the magnifying glass gave us inspiration as we liked the attention that is paid to the detail, the shot through the glass is complex as different layers are used and creates more depth in the shot. The sound bridge of the mans voice makes it clear of the contextual situation of the film and we understand that men hold social dominance in this fictional society and that the man holds a power over these women.Titles are used over the shots in order to let the audience know of what film critics thought of the film, others opinions will help the viewer decide whether or not to watch the film.Costume is used to contradict the status of woman and men, men in the trailer are seen wearing formal clothes, for example the soldiers in their uniforms, it is clear they hold some sort of responsibility and a duty, on the other hand the women in basic, plain clothing are not represented as having much of an importance in society. The text will appear to people who have strong views of misogyny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdbI0Fn4COQ
  • 3. TERMINATOR:GENISYS  The camera placement of the opening shot is used in order to make the audience feel of distance to the scene and the action, the fact the camera is placed in a dark garage and at a low angle gives the impression that somebody is watching the boy, the long shot allows us to identify of some of the dangers that the young boy, the mother and the dog may be exposed to.The low key lighting creates a negative, oppressive feel. The extreme close up of the mother and boys hand shows that they have a strong relationship, therefore any negative events that occur after this causes the audience to feel upset as they understand the relationship between the characters. Age is represented in an anti-stereotypical way, with the mother of the boy seen to be more scared than the boy.The low angle shot of the boy, alongside the shot reverse shot of the high angled shot of the mother, represents the boy as a lot more brave and powerful although he is physically smaller and younger. In keeping with modern texts, lots of CGI is used to create explosions and futuristic technology, we have found this a big part of modern day texts and from our survey have found that 70% of people wish to see some sort of CGI used within a film, this lead us to the decision of using CGI in our trailer in order to appeal to the mass audience. Within this trailer, CGI is used to blow up Los Angeles, this scenario is very fictional and surreal, thus appealing to a mass audience. Lots of slow fade to black transitions are used, alongside a change in music, this makes it very clear to the viewer that the text is a trailer as it creates a fragmented piece of text which is not fluent. The change in music from a low pitched bellowing tone to a high pitched happy tone indicates the variety and range of scenes, therefore representing the film as a whole. From the voiceover we get a slight insight into the background and contextual information of the plot, therefore giving the viewer some more incentive to go and watch the full film as they have a better understanding. In the trailer we are able to see through the use of costume that woman are represented as weak and as not serving much of a purpose this we know not to be true, therefore the directors have followed conventions of older texts, where there would be a clear gender imbalance. The heavy makeup and long hair of the lady in contrast to the battle scars and a range of resources such as guns used by the men, means that a typical damsel in distress character is created as the lady is seen to be there to be protected by the men and it is implied she is less as useful as the men.The positions of the cuts are used to effectively not reveal lots of information, we only see the build up of events and never the full outcome, this is left for the full film. I like how effective the short and snappy shots are of this trailer and have decided to try and create my trailer with lots of short, explosive shots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGSxss7gWak
  • 4. JURASSIC WORLD  This film is a second instalment of the already existing billion dollar film ‘Jurassic park’, therefore meaning most of the viewers already have a slight knowledge about the film. Dramatic irony is used in order to foreshadow what is to come in the full film, the mother of the children says, “If something chases you, run.” Although at the time she says this in a sarcastic/funny tone, we know that later on a serious situation will arise. The ‘Universal’ graphic logo as an introduction instantly means that the majority of the audience can relate to other award winning films of which they are fans of which have links to ‘Universal’, therefore encourages them to continue watching as they have always had a positive experience with them before. The handheld action of the camera represents the young boy as excited, we understand that he can not keep still and shares a passion with dinosaurs. The low angled, close up, tracking shot of the boy as he runs through the crowd of adults of whom are much taller and stronger than him is evidence of the lengths he is prepared to go to come near to these dinosaurs. Lots of CGI is used in order to create these fictional dinosaurs, I feel that this film will appeal to a very wide audience as dinosaurs are something of history, which lots of people wish to experience how they would of lived and acted. The big swooping establishing shots created using a crane, create a feeling of freedom alongside the harmonic soundtrack, implying a child like theme, even if the viewer is an older adult they more than likely had some sort of interest in dinosaurs when they were younger, therefore they can reminisce on their youthful days. The everyday clothing of all the characters makes it as relatable as possible to the audience, therefore they feel less distanced and creates a believable feel. The shots used make us feel nearer to the dinosaurs than the characters in the film, thus making us feel privileged. The increased tempo along with the silence before the beast jumps from the water indicates that something is going to happen and creates suspension, it is also comical, the fact that a great white shark, an animal we see as being top of the food chain is made to look so weak and small. A POV of the dinosaur is used in order to tease us as the viewer, this is because we don't actually get to see the dinosaur. Typical of a trailer, lots of noises are used in order to leave the audience guessing what happens, and leaving them to find out in the main film as they wish to find out if their guess is right. In keeping with modern day texts, the alpha female is represented as more powerful and more resourceful than the men. We hope to create a balance in gender within our trailer through the use of props and costume. Lighting is important in this trailer as it indicates as to whether the character is in trouble or not, low key lighting suggests that they are in trouble. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFinNxS5KN4
  • 5. SAN ANDREAS  The first shot, a tracking mid shot of deep focus allows for both the helicopter and the scenery to be focused on.The slow motion used in the shot of the helicopter, puts an emphasis on the power of the helicopter and reveals just how complex the rotas of the helicopter are. The slow motion of the helicopter and the slow piano soundtrack give a sense of freedom, especially as flying connotes freedom and escape. The establishing shot of Los Angeles is a shot of which most of us are familiar with being used in films, I personally do not like these cliché shots and when creating my trailer I will try to steer clear and make use of some more original shots. However on the other hand it could be argued that the shot of the city helps to set the scene for the audience and lets them know of where the film will be set, gradually adding to their contextual knowledge of the film. The pan shots of the city landscape are used in order to represent the city as vast and complex as we are able to get a good view. The graphic coding is fragmented by certain shots which help the viewer to reflect on the question as well as leaving them thinking about what is to come next. A change in the soundtrack, from peaceful piano to a more fast paced violent piano soundtrack indicate something bad, this alongside the extreme close up of the lady’s face in order to show her scared and worried emotion, allows us to sympathise with the character and makes the audience feel as if they want to help. The pleonastic sound of the car tyres screeching indicates some sort of emergency as we would associate this noise with having to stop quickly because of a hazard, this hazard, as an audience we wish to find out.The soundtrack which is played over the short snippets of shots, almost makes them flashbacks, we are muted from the sound of the scene by the soundtrack and therefore only get a visual representation of what is happening- thus encouraging the viewer to watch the full film. We hope that by doing this is in our trailer, we create a sense of secrecy leaving the audience feeling as if they did not experience the full extent of the action, enticing them to watch the full film. From using actors such as Dwayne Johnson who have been used in many major films to play the alpha male, it instantly has an appeal to already existing fans of his work. The three shot where the lady is in the middle of the two men represents the overall gender of females as powerful and brave, this is very typical of modern day texts. Although through the use of costume and resources such as helicopters we are able to identify who holds what status, in the end we can imply that the overall human race is too weak for this natural hazard of an earthquake as from the use of extreme long shots we are able to see the extent of which the damage the earthquake has caused. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yftHosO0eUo
  • 6. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON  The initial pull focus shot is used in order to give the impression of waking up, we see the complex layering of the electricity cables and the palm trees, contradictory to each other, the palm trees are beautiful and something of nature where as the electric cables are ugly and man made, maybe hinting at the ugly reality of the world we live in.Themes of realism are clear from the start and throughout. The close up aerial shot of the man laying on his back surrounded by vinyl covers and with his earphones in indicates that he has a passion for music,The low key lighting of the room in which he lays suggests that his life outside of his headphones and therefore music is dull and hopeless. Just from costume, the baseball jersey and cap, we are able to identify that he is American. Use of props such as guns and drugs creates a stereotypical representation of what it is like to be poor and live in these areas of Compton. The high pitched, subtle music carries themes of hope and belief. The use of close up shots of the man when he is getting arrested helps to focus on his emotion and how much of an effect it really has on him, allowing for the audience to sympathise with the man. There is a clear gender imbalance throughout, we see white policeman arresting black males, here people of the black ethnicity are seen to be the criminals and a clear division is show between white and black people. We see a racist society of which these people live in which addresses some of the problems facing America in the world today. Lots of fade to black transitions leave us wandering what happens next and what the final outcome was, this means we are enticed to watch the full film. An array of shot reverse shots are used in order to show the close connection between all the members of the gang, we understand that they are all on the same wavelength. The contrast in costume, the white policeman wears a uniform indicating he has a responsibility and holds status where as the black males wear casual street clothes we would usually associate with gangsters, there is a clear gender imbalance, with black males being represented as less important. Real life NWA songs are used as the soundtracks as the audience of the trailer and film would remember and like these songs, encouraging them to watch the film. From the trailer we can see the transition as the gang go from poor to rich, the change of clothing and use of gold chains when they are rich indicates wealth. There is a huge focus and representation of gang culture, sometimes negative representations such as when they are arrested and sometimes positive such as when they are performing and giving something back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsbWEF1Sju0
