3. Shot 1
This is the first significant shot I chose.
As it set the scene with an establishing
shot at the new house, conveying this is
where everything changes for the family,
and where they are looking to have a
fresh start. Its high key lighting showing
they are looking to find happiness and
peace in this home. We slowly fade in out
of this shot, making it again not sense any
danger or worries about the place. There
is both non-diegetic and diegetic sound,
the non-diegetic sound being the soft and
peaceful music in the background, and
diegetic being the dialogue between two
characters, about how they are looking to
start over for the sake of his daughter.
This helps people to have a part of the
back story as to why they have moved
away.
4. Shot 2
The next shot is a close, mid shot of the
main character the daughter. Its low key
lighting with the main focus of light being
on her face. She is portrayed in normal
nightwear and ready to go to sleep. There
is both diegetic and non-diegetic sound.
The diegetic sound being about the
conversation between her and her father
about a new friend she has made,
'Charlie.' The character performance is
normal just a conversation with her
father. The shots are kept longer to let the
audience engage with everything being
said.
5. Shot 3
We then see an establishing shot of the
bath in low key lighting, with a
silhouette of light reflecting from the
middle slowing fading out. Again the
shots are kept short to help the
audience sense the danger It then
starts to become very dark and we
suspect the girl as in a part of this. The
shots start to become faster to show the
tension building up. The non-diegetic
sound becomes louder and louder and
the dialouge between the father and
daughter is kept very short and you can
see the fear in her face as she speaks.
6. Shot 4
We next have an over the shoulder shot,
in low key lighting in the late evening
to help the audience sense the tension
between the characters in this scene.
We have the little girl much on edge
when her dad welcomes another woman
into her house, and we begin to sense
the fear in the woman's voice and facial
expressions. It’s a very quick cut
between each shot and begin to see
various flashbacks as the scene goes on
conveying the action. The sound is this
scene is dialogue between the 3
characters and sound effects as the
flashbacks start to begin.
7. Shot 5
We next have a long shot of the main
character framed in the doorway with a
very dull expression on, she appears as
if she is the reason why all these weird
events keep happening. The lighting is
kept low key, we see a slow fade to
black after this shot leaving to mystery
what she is staring directly at. The
dialogue between the characters seems
threatening towards the lady in her
house and using non-diegetic sound
over the top with loud sudden noises
builds up the tension.
8. Shot 6
We then see an establishing point of
view shot from inside a wardrobe, this
conveys that someone is watching them.
We see the darkness coming from inside
the wardrobe and light coming in so it
shows they are the main focus of the
shot. The sound we hear is dialogue
between the two female characters and
can see the fear building up in the lady
face when the young character called
'Emily' answers she's already playing a
game with someone else here. The non
diegetic sound we hear is loud sudden
sounds that grasp onto the auidence by
shocking them.
9. Shot 7
We see a mid shot of the women looking
shocked and scared, the type of mid
shot it is, is that its also a point of view
shot as well since she is looking directly
at the camera. The sound of this scene
is non-diegetic and a quiet whisper of
the young girl counting as if she was
playing the game hide and seek making
a clear direct reference and letting the
audience know this is a common theme
of the entire film. The pace of this shot
is very fast moving tracking/following
her towards the window in the
background.
10. Shot 8
We then see a long shot tilting upwards
on 'Emily', this implies that she is in
control and makes everybody else fear
her and she has more power by the way
this shot looks, also as that she is the
center of the shot and that the light is
focusing on her. The sound of this scene
is both diegetic and non-diegetic, the
diegetic sound is the dad screaming her
name as if she is missing and he's
worried about her, the non-diegetic
sound is still her counting, as if the
game is about to end as the trailer
comes to an end. It’s a very short shot
with a quick pace, increasing the
intensity of this scene and keeping the
audience on edge.
11. Shot 9
The final shot is a mid-close up in
darker lowkey lighting then the rest of
the trailer's key shots with a subtle
light on her face, signifying that the
trailer is coming to an end., looking
down a dark hallway to show that the
game is coming to an end and 'Charlie'
has been found. The non-diegetic sound
is slowing fading out again signifying
this is all over in the trailer and the
actual film.
12. Overall Trailer Analysis
As there is not an official teaser trailer for hide
and seek, I have anaylsed the full theatrical
trailer which is 2 minutes 21 seconds long.
The information that the audience receives
about this film is that it is a psychological
thriller, and leads us to think that the 'Charlie'
friend is someone who she has always been
close to.
The text graphics that have been used is very
minimal throughout the entire trailer and they
begin towards the end. The titles include the
two main character's names where they slowly
fade in with a dark background and a dark font.
We then see the title of the film and a tag line
in that same dark font.
It leaves the audience with many questions
such as who is 'Charlie' and how did she just
suddenly meet him, and other major questions
such as what does the dad have to do with the
mums death.
The key selling points that they have to choose
to focus in on is the genre, including the big
mystery of the film being who is 'Charlie'.
The type of audience that is being aimed at
here is both males and females from 16-30 as
they are the are old enough to understand the
plot but not where they would find it too creepy
or off putting.
This trailer is useful for our own teaser trailer
that we are creating, as they both are from the
same genre, and we wil be basing our film
around the idea of a character having a side of
his personality that he doesn’t know about.
13. The low key lighting in
this shot with a
silhouette of light
coming from the door
frame. In a much more
vibrant sharp yellow
light.
As she is the main focus
in the frame, we have
both characters looking
up at her in fear to
show she has power
over them.
We have a mid-shot on
both the characters
standing sideways
showing their body
language is tense. But
enabling us to see their
facial expressions.
From everything in this
we can establish the
genre, from the lighting
to how the characters
are presented.
The font in this is very
plain and sharp helping
to not glamourize the
poster, making it
become more realistic
and mysterious. As it is
a thriller genre keeping
the font plain doesn’t
take away from the
drama and tension of
the poster.
From this we can take and
use in our own poster the
placement of characters and
what it is exactly we want
to be the main focus on in
our shot.
